Re: FitzRoy / Hopkins

Hello
My grandfather Montagu Desmond Fitzroy said he was born at Muckross in County Kerry, he had an Irish drivers license and a coat of arms containing three fleur de lis with a chevron seperating them and above that, a strip of ermin and above that either a ball with spikes on it or a sun and on top of the shield a crown.
He said his mother was Louise Duthie from Knysna in the Cape, South Africa, the Duthies are said to be the desendants of George Rex who was apparently the illigitimate son of King George III and Hannah Lightfoot.
His father was an officer with the Royal Irish Fusiliers and was in South Africa during the Boer War. There were other Fitzroys in South Africa during the early to mid nineteen hunderds but they all seem to be Graftons i.e. Hugh Dennis Charles Fitzroy 11th Duke of Grafton. Are all Fitzroys related to the Graftons or are there other branches of the name.
I too can not find any official information save the drivers info which dates back to the 1930's.
Are there any Fitzroy links I should be trying?
I am hoping someone out there can point me in the right direction.

ceheathcote@hotmail.com

Re: Welcome to the Fitzroy board!

I am looking for descendents of Augustus Henry Fitzroy, 3rd Duke of Grafton, and Anne Liddell circa 1735-1804, England. They divorced in 1869 and she eloped with a Fitzpatrick. He (Augustus) married Elizabeth Wrottesley in 1869 and they had 12 additional children. I can trace them; however, my husband's grandfather's mother was Mary Fitzroy, 1835-1873. She died shortly after Edward James Carteret (Hudson) was born on April 6, 1873. Mary Fitzroy was the grandaughter of Somerset Fitzroy, son of Anne Liddell. It appears Ann Liddell she really "got around" and had several children with Augustus Henry Fitzroy, 7, plus a daughter Catherine Clarke, who married her husband's brother's son Charles Fitzroy. Any information would be appreciated on Mary Fitzroy (Hudson) who I believe lived in Bristol when my husband's grandfather was born. I'd be happy to share anything I have with those interested. Thanks, MAH

Try this, it's very infornative but i do know that any of the Fitzoys who married out of the station didn't get much of a mention in the family genealogy or family history. Their names and DOBs sometimes got mentioned but other info is left out. It's quite amazing considering where their surname comes from.
I have been studying the Fitzroys for quite some time and found the following site to be most helpful >>

http://www.thepeerage.com/index.htm ,

If you cannot find what you are looking for on the site then do write and ask the gentleman who compiled the information. His e mail address is there for all to see.

MaryJane
Welcome to the Fitzroy board!

Greeting everyone:

I am not the moderator, but I did request this board, so I feel a bit responsible. I just wanted to say hello to everyone and wish you all best of luck on your genealogical research! Please, play nicely with others and don't feed the energy beasts (aka the flamers or spammers).

"Fitzroy" is derived from the French "fils roi", which means "son of the king". It was commonly bestowed upon the illegitimate son of a king in many soveriegn countries. Sometimes the child would also be known by other bynames, such as:

Richard Fitzroy, also called Richard FitzJohn -- son of King John of England.

Rainald Fitzroy or Rainald de Dunstanville -- son of King Henry I of England.

Henry FitzHenry -- also son of King Henry I of England.

No one byname was absolutely correct, and often were interchangeable. So keep that in mind if you run across ancestors with multiple surnames, as their names were not as fixed and rigid as ours are today.

Good luck!

Jess

Wow, Jessica, that is a wonderful resource. Unfortunately, I was unable to find my great grandmother, Elizabeth Fitzroy,
among those listed. I know she or her parents came here from Great Britian and she was probably born in the mid- 1800's. She married Charles E. Rose and lived Stamford, Connecticut for 50+ years. I would be grateful for any help you or anyone else could provide.

Looking for any information regarding:

Robert Fitzroy, born Abt. 1873 to James Fitzroy and Annie Evans (could be Nevins). In the late 1800's they lived in Brooklyn. This Robert Fitzroy married Anna Ganley in Brooklyn in the 1890's. They are my great-grandparents.

It is a family "legend" that James Fitzroy was cousin (possibly removed) to Captain Robert Fitzroy of the HMS Beagle (Charles Darwin).

I remember that the family talked about the Duke of Grafton and that she was descended from him. I don't even know where or when she was born.
Hi,
I realize that you are not the moderator, but wonder if you have any info on Fitzroys in this country. My g grandmother was Elizabeth Fitzroy (I have her coat of arms which looks like the current royal arms, but has a diagononal bar through it which denotes illegitmacy, I think). She married Charles Rose and they lived in Connecticut. I have no other info on her and very little on him. I would like to trace her line back. Can you help?
