If you are still receiving these messages, can you please email me? Eldon Willis Fitzwater was my grandfather also. My mother is Eulah Audrey Fitzwater Meikle. I am trying to get info on Napolean Bonaparte Fitzwater's wife. We were always told her name was "Emma Estep" but now I think her first name may have been "Nancy".

My grandfather, Liggett, stated once that his father was "sent away to live with relatives" as a small child. It was there that he stated he was "treated like and ate on the floor with the dogs." He did have darker skin and curly hair. We have always wondered if he was illegitimate and was sent away. The entire family has NEVER had any luck finding any information on Willis. My father is named after him, but neither my grandfather or Ollie his sister ever mentioned him much. I am so very curious.

Please contact me at bankdevine@mchsi.com
George W. and Margaret Jane Rogers are not the parents of Willis (for sure). Liggett was born 1 May 1914 in Shennandoah Co., VA where parents were in 1910 - 1930. He is not in SSDI. His father Willis F. Fitzwater was born 1872 in WV In 1920 living in Madison Twp., Shenandoah Co., VA I have no marriage record to wife Vallie Ellen Helsley but 1910 census says mar. 3 yr. I have their children. 1900 Willis is 28 single boarder living 1900 with Benjamin Scott in Grant Co., WV says he was born WV. as does the 1920 census.
Suggest you locate Death Certificate of Willis to see if parents names are listed. Also look for Obit I have other information that may assist you.

Leejean,

While I was research Fitzwater's, I found this
reply and then I checked some of your other
post....... I read you were looking for NA (Cherokee Princess')
Sarah Nichols of Virginia. I know my Grandmother was
part Cherokee and her mother was full and she was from
Va. and she walked the Trail of Tears..... did I mention that
she was also a Nichols? Also to have claimed she was a Princess
of there tribe before leaving. She was born Aug. 1880 and married
in 1900 to a Varney. I'm sorry to say I don't have anything on the
Nichols.

I thank you for my smile this morning, now I have some where to start
looking for my Nichols (Va) family. I wish I had more for you.
Patricia

Hi Ann, Thank you for the information. I had heard Hosea died while in a prison camp, but was told otherwise and also that he died at Fort Lee, then that he died at a post hospital in Charleston WV in 1965 (this last info came from the military recds I ordered from NARA. The main info I wanted wasn't in those recds and thats his burial place. The book you referred to about the Ramseys, I have exerpts from it filed in my family tree here. I will send you a private message and give you my email add. Is Leander in Nicholas Co? And when you referred to Isaiah's home place, was that where he lived with his mother Nancy, before he married? Well, we can discuss all this in private. Thanks again.

Hi
I found my notes. Hosea was mentioned often in a book I have, the Ramsey Family History by J.C. Ramsey. Usually it is in connection with fighting the Confederates around the Leander area. One of the stories mentions that Hosea Fitwater was in a group that was captured and sent to Salisburg, NC to a prison camp and 9 or 10 of the 18 died in prison. This was in August of 1964. He is not mentioned as one who came back but the story teller could not remember all the names. I have a note that he died at Ft. Lee. I have visited the site of Isaiah's home place, just past the cemetary where he is buried.

If you want a copy of my complete notes, I can send them to you via E mail.

Hi Ann, Thanks for responding. Well, that makes us cousins. The last census recd I found Hosea on was 1850 in Nicholas Co VA with his mother Nancy. He would've been 20. Then around 1860 he married Sarah Jane Nichols in Nicholas Co and had 2 children..Ruhama and Tyler Newton Fitzwater (my Great Grandfather) He joined the Union Army on 1 Jan 1863 and died at a post hospital of typhus in Charleston WV on 3 Feb 1865. I need to find his parents old home place. He could be buried there. Sarah remarried three years after Hosea's death, so they're not buried at the same place (she is buried here in Indiana) If you find out anything, I would appreciate it. And, yes, I saw your Great, Great Grandfather Isaiah's Civil War recds, too. Nice to meet you. Btw, I am coming to WV in July to do research. Thanks again.

I am still searching for the lost half brother to my grandfather, Everest Barzillai Fitzwater. His father was Rev BN (Barzillai Nelson) Fitzwater and mother Ann Davis Fitzwater.
He was in Buffalo, New York, filled in a draft card and joined the army at the time of WWI. BN was said to have received one post card from him but we don't know from where. We are not sure if it was the US Army or maybe Canadian. No record after that can be found.

Ann Fitzwater Kluge

Hosea Fitzwater is the brother to my great great grandfather Isaiah Fitzwater. Isaiah lived in Leander, West Virginia and donated the land for the Richmond Chapel there. He and his wife are buried in that cemetary near their home. The only other Fitzwater I found buried there was their son George Washington Fitzwater and his wife and son. I have visited the area and I will check my notes to see if I have anything on Hosea. Isaiah was also in the Union Army.

There is this Fitzwater family with the mother's name of Ethel in the 1930 Randolph Co., WV census:

Mason M Fitzwater 29
Ethel M Fitzwater 24
Geneva A Fitzwater 5
Harold R Fitzwater 3 6/12
Wanda J Fitzwater 1 5/12

Also, I found burial records for Mason and Ethel Fitzwater in the book "They Rest Quietly - Cemetery Records of Randolph County, West Virginia" by Odie Velta Nestor Chapman, copyright 1996. They are buried in IOOF Cemetery (a/k/a Midland), Beverly District. The information is as follows:

Fitzwater, Ethel, b. 14 July 1903, d. 7 Jan. 1976, Dau. of James W. and Leda B.

Katheryn Fitzwater Devine is the preeminent researcher of the Fitzwater family in the U.S. She has done extensive and verified research beginning about in the 1950s, building on research previously conducted by her father. She published her findings in a book, "Fitzwater Families in America," first published in 1992 and revised in 2003.

Her mailing address, according to the book, is:
26190 Bradshaw Drive
Menifee Valley, CA 92585

Her findings seem to confirm that he was called "Soldier Bill" but I suggest that you contact her directly (send a Self-addressed Stamped Envelope" for how you could go about proving this. She has been burned by people who take her lifetime of work and pass it off as their own. That's why I suggest that you contact her directly.

Sometimes she does check this board, and she might respond to you directly.

The original record is a public record. The question was posed on the Fitzwater list because it had to do with a Fitzwater. It had nothing to do with the Fitzwater book. I would have no way of knowing it was a family secret! I wasn't part of the secret! I'm sorry Mrs. Devine feels the way she does. It's unfortunate.

My husband is one of the sons of Jack Alonzo Fitzwater. Jack and Louise separated/divorced in about 1955/1956 and my husband Larry had not seen him since 1957. His sister Barbara had had contact until about 1971 and then they heard nothing more. Social Security shows his last know address in Virginia and he died in 1973 (I think, don't have my records in front of me.) I have requested as much information as I can from the Military archives in MIssouri, but it will be at least another couple of weeks before I hear anything else from them. As far as Jack's brother Larry I have no information on him either. I think they were pretty much wanderers after the Korean war. Any thing you can help with will help fill in the pieces. ARe you any relation and how?
Alonzo Eugene Fitzwater is also my great grandfather. My grandfather was Jack A. Fitzwater. I don't have alot of information on this side of the family. It seems like evertime I find someone that knows something they always clam up when they find out who I am? Not really sure why that is. I would love to find out any information that you would be willing to share. I can give you what I have found as well.

I am a daughter of an Ervin Fitzwater who is son of a Maynard Fitzwater who married a Lulu Sebring and am looking for family from here and back. All take I know have died and can not find out who now holds any of the ancestry to this family and am interested in getting as much as I can.
Been told that they are Irish decendants, but don't have anything of where they came from or who might be still alive. We lived on a farm in Bradford County, Canton, Pennsylvania and was a large family, total of nine children.
Please let me know if anyone knows this group? Thank you!
Sir,

I am looking for confirmation on a quote from "Story of the life of William Fitzwater by Don Norman" that William Fitzwater (1735-1824) saw active service in the Revolution and was known as "Soldier Bill".

I have looked in several databases for Rockingham VA as Mcallister’s data and can not find a reference to a Bill or William Fitzwater. There are several to John Fitzwater.

My Lineage:

Anthony J. Lister, son of
Leah Jean Hall, daughter of
Ada Virginia Jones (1917-1995) daughter of
Kitty G. Fitzwater (1890-1964) daughter of
Napoleon B. Fitzwater (1854-1924) son of
John T. Fitzwater (1804-1865) son of
Thomas S. Fitzwater (1765-1848) son of
William Fitzwater (1735-1824) son of
Thomas Fitzwater (1701-1761) son of
Thomas Fitzwater (1673-1748)-1st Gen Colonial

I would appreciate any assistance you could render.

Tony Lister

Home:
Anthony J.
Your post 25 Sept 2008 states this was in response to a query but isn't in response to any query on any genealogy message board I have been able to locate. I have additional data for that individual.
This questions the accuracy of the FITZWATER book which states "there is no death record in Oregon." A "relative" presumed he died in OR and asked the data be used "discretely." What are the reasons for name change per the court record.
Is this your family line? What is your interest in this family?
If anyone has any information regarding the actual death place, burial of Adam Given Fitzwater, please submit.
Thank you!
