Hello beaglemom28,

I believe Cecilia's father is a Jeremiah Fives, her mother is a Catherine (but I have no maiden name yet). I'm not certain which one though, as there are a few, at least two of which landed in NYC. Jeremiah is either the son of Timothy & Mary or Jeremiah & Julia. Cecilia's birth I believe was Nov 28, 1903, and in the 1910 Census has a younger sister named Catherine. I'm looking now at my printout of the 1910 US Census, and going on the immigration year & that it is a Brooklyn address (the other Jeremiah I have is at a Manhattan address), my guess would be Cecilia's father Jeremiah is the son of Timothy Fives & Mary Cadogan who also came to the US with their kids in 1889.

Timothy's (born 1832 Sep 22) father is a John Fives (who I believe is also the father of Jeremiah Fives, the father of the other Jeremiah in NY). I have a photo that my grandmother said is her father and what she believes is his 'cousin Jerry'. I kind of wonder then if it is that Jeremiah. My great grandfather is a Michael Fives. All the Fives are from a small fishing village, Scilly, Kinsale, Ireland (well, all these Fives. There is a Fives branch from County Waterford as well, that I'm not sure how they may be connected to the Kinsale Fives). It seems like most of the Fives in the NYC area around 1900 though were the Kinsale Fives, and most seemed to immigrate between about 1885 and the early 1900s. Timothy's mother is a Joanna Harrington, and I have no certain dates on John Fives & Joanna Harrington.

I have tons of Fives/Kinsale info, it's become an obsession/passion/etc of mine piecing together this family/town. My grandmother was also born in NY, a Fives, and not just her father, but her mother as well were born in Kinsale.

Hi, I have just started looking for my ancestors from Kinsale, County Cork. My grandmothers name was Annie Fives, she had two brothers that I know of, Timothy and William. I believe her father was a seafarer who, I was told, died at sea. Annie lived in Pickwick Street, Toxteth, Liverpool, she had four children, Florence, Timothy, (my father), William and Ronald. Her husbands surname was Macdonald, I think she may have been married at her local church which was St Patrick's, Park Road, Toxteth, Liverpool possibly in September 1906. She died in 1964? and was interred in Ford Cemetary, Liverpool. UK. Do any of these details match any of the information you have. Regards Tim Macdonald

I'm not on paid right now with ancestry so it won't let me send you a private message. So I'm going to give the email I set up for Fives stuff, from there I can give you my 'personal email'. kinsalefives@gmail.com (anyone else on this board who wants to talk Fives of Kinsale is welcome to use that email to contact me also). I was emailing earlier this year with another Fives descendant who visited Kinsale some months back, I believe they also met Eleanor or some folks related to her. I believe a lot of the Fives in the Kinsale area actually lived in Scilly more specifically, and most of the men seemed to be sailors or fishermen.

This looks like a Julia Fives I have in some of my info, however I've attributed her to being the child of a Julia Sullivan and Jeremiah Fives (plus I have rather extensively searched everything I can on any and all Fives from Kinsale, Ireland). Actually am rather certain of that, since I also found a 1910 US census in which her brother, Michael Fives is living with her and Daniel Sheehan, and their daughter in Brooklyn. Micheal Fives is my Great Grandfather. And Micheal, as well as several of their siblings have birth info in which the parents names are given as Julia Sullivan and Jeremiah Fives. (Both of theirs fathers are Johns, as I've found a marriage date for Julia & Jeremiah.) I'm curious where the Joanna Greenway Sheehan info comes from though, or perhaps I'm reading your info incorrectly, I'm not certain? I also have what I believe is Julia's arrival to the US, with her brother John in 1896.

Okay, I did a quick search, and assuming that though Julia and Daniel married in the US, I think he was from the Kinsale area as well. And there is a Daniel Sheehan born in Worlds End, Kinsale, Dec 29, 1869 to a John Sheehan and Joanna Greenway (census ages aren't always right on, but that birth year seems close enough to the age Daniel listed in the Census). So perhaps I was mistaking your comment to mean Joanna was Julia's mother, when you meant she was Daniel's. Anyhow, if you check this and want to talk, please send me a message through Ancestry's messaging system. Sounds like your husband would be my 2nd cousin once removed. I would just give you my email, but I don't like posting it on public forums. But if you read this, please feel free to message me. The Fives of Kinsale have become something of a passion of mine trying to figure them all out.

I keep thinking of starting a website for Fives of Kinsale, but I'm not entirely sure, where/how etc. :)

- Meegan

Hi,
My husband and I will be traveling to Kinsale, Cork, Ireland this summer. His mothers parents are from Kinsale. We hope to find out some information about his grandparents who where from Kinsale. His grandmother was Julia Fives. Her mother was Joanna Greenway Sheehan. Julia Fives married Daniel Sheehan. They settled in Brooklyn, NY. Grandmother Julia lived with her daughter Margaret (Sheehan) and son-in law Frank Englehardt until she died, shortly before my husband was born in 1949. If anyone has any information about this family, we would deeply appreciate it! Thank you.

Celeste Englehardt
hi

I know my grandmother Annie Fives, was married in Liverpool in 1906, she was 22 years old. Her father's name was William, according to her Marriage Certificate her father was a Mariner. I know Annie had two brothers, Timothy and William and that they lived in Kinsale. The National Archives of Ireland 1901 census has a Fives family living in Scilly, Kinsale. William, the father, was a fisherman aged 57 and widowed, he had a daughter Annie 22 years, a son Timothy 7 years old, there is no mention of a son called William in the census; if he was part of this family he may not have been at home at that particular time. I don't know if this is of any help to you, it would be good if your grandfather was Annie's brother, this would mean that we have connected up one part of the family. I would like to find out Annies Fives mother's maiden name, if you know it would you get back to me with it please? Regards, Tim. ps Happy New Year

I believe a couple of the people who've posted earlier in this thread are descendants of Annie's brother, Timothy, who I think also wound up in that same area of Liverpool England. Along with a few others. I believe that Annie, William, and Timothy also had an older sister Julia who married another Fives (possibly a second cousin or something like that) and they too wound up in Liverpool, from what has been said in this thread. I'm still working on putting all this info into like a page that can be viewed by everyone. There aren't that many Fives in Kinsale, and it seems like there must be a connection somewhere between them all.

Just wondering if anyone is still out there researching the Fives of Kinsale. I'd love to know anything anyone knows. I'm neck deep in trying to connect all these Fives to each other. Actually thinking of starting a page or something for it. But most of my knowledge is simply from internet research. I feel like I'm inches from a breakthrough, I just can't get there. I'm a descendant from a Kinsale Fives (as well as Nugents of Kinsale). It's such a small town, everyone seemed to know each other. And the Fives name is a rather small one even amongst that small town. Feels like if I could get back to the late 1700s, we all probably have a common ancestor. Any info would be appreciated. :)

Hi ! We have a birth certificate for my grandfather, Joseph William Alcock, whose parents were Jane Blackhall and Edward Alcock.Jane was 37,making her birth year 1850-51, and Edward alcock was 40, meaning he was born in 1845-46.Joseph William was born in Kirkdale ,England in 1888. From playing around on the internet, I think I have discovered that Jane Blackhall Alcock also emigarated to the U.S. and died in 1903 in New York City...possibly living on west 67th Street. I have had some luck tracoking down Blackhall on the internet and would be glad to share that if you think your Jane's maiden name was Blackhall. I am anxious to know anything at all about Joseph Alcock and have so far not been able to find anything! Any help, idea, etc. that you could share would be gratefully appreciated !Mary Alcock

Hello All! Kay, I believe messaged me a couple months ago, and just recently got to sending one back. But I have a Kinsale - Fives connection also. Not sure how it adds in. I have very little info, really only what my grandmother told me. She's a Fives (that was her maiden name).

The Tree she gave me has a Michael Fives with a Catherine Regan having a son Jeremiah who then with a Julia Sheenan has a son Michael Fives who marrys a Margaret Allen (nee Nugent - Also from Scilly, Kinsale though they met & married in New York) and has my grandmother and three other children (Helen, Michael, and Jeremiah).

I unfortunately don't have dates. I'm not sure where/how to find info from Ireland. What little I have from searching here and my grandmother's brief info, is from the 1920 census and a couple other bits I could find on Michael.

According to the census he arrived in New York about 1889 and Naturalized in 1899. According to a WW1 draft card I found he was born Nov 7, 1873. His occupation is always stated as a Longshoreman, working one of the Piers along the Hudson river. The family lived in Manhattan (at least he did at the end of his life with the family). And according to my grandmother he died when she was 5 of Cancer (which would have put his death around 1928).

I do not know if Michael came to the States alone or with family. I don't know if he joined anyone, and have yet to locate him in the 1900 or 1910 census, though he apparently had been in the US since 1889. My grandmother's maternal side has been much more 'bountiful' in terms of what I know of them, when they came, and finding record of them in New York. But her paternal (Michael Fives) as well as my grandfather's side (Moonan/McCann's also Irish but from the Louth/Meath area of Ireland) are proving to be tougher.

Also if anyone knows any good places to find Irish records, I'd love to know that, since tracing my family any farther than my great grandparents requires finding people in Ireland. If ancestry has decent Irish records let me know, as thus far I've only used the 'US' package here.

Thanks,
Meegan

Hi

I am searching for the Fives clan from Kinsale. My husband's grandfather was John Fives, born in Liverpool 1908. His father I think also called John came over from Ireland somewhere between 1905-08. Vague recollections of my husbands mother, Mary Fives (b.1938) include a brother called William who went to America and also another brother called Tim (she remembers an uncle Timmy being mentioned).

I am having a nightmare trying to research these FIVES, especially trying to piece all the info together. I think we may have the same family. Can you contact me on kayashton1@ntlworld.com if you read this? Many thanks.

Kay

Ellen,
I am also doing research on the Fives from Kinsale.
My greatgrand mother was Mary Ann Fives, daughter of
Timothy Fives and Mary Ann Reynolds. They also had
a son Timothy Fives that married Bridget. Perhaps,
we can exchange some info.

Maryann

Descendants of Fives from Kinsale

Hi, Maureen, I'm glad to hear from you.

On the origin of the name, I have the following: The name is very rare and isn't included in lists of "Irish surnames." It may have been "deFives" originally, from a town in France; so they may be Norman-Irish. Or it may be Scots from a placename in Aberdeenshire. Or perhaps a variant of FIvey, which is supposed to be from Ir. Ó Cuaig. The sept Quigg was of Derry and now widespread in Ulster. The name probably arises from the personal name Cuag — certainly not from cúig ("five" in Irish). There are also "Five" families in Holland. The name was most common in Waterford-Wexford per online Irish name sources.

The only Fiveses I've found record of in Kinsale so far were all fishermen in Scilly in the 1901 census (this is after all my relatives had already left--which occurred in the 1880s).

I have found one record of one of my relatives' arrival in New York: Mrs. J. Fives, 24, wife, arrived to join her husband Denis Fives 19 Oct 1888 from Ireland on the Britannic from Queenstown, with Mary Jane Fives spinster 18 (I assume Denis's sister), William Fives 2, and Norah Fives 3 mo. Her husband is listed in 1888-90 Brooklyn directories as a laborer at 338 Hamburg. The family moved back and forth between addresses in Manhattan and Brooklyn and owned beach property in Staten Island by the 1920s. While Denis was always a laborer (on the docks, as a stove setter, et al.) his wife and children generally became telegrapher operators and managers.

I've found some information in NY about other Fives relations, though the precise relationship isn't always clear, they all lived together or nearby and many worked in telegraphy:

Let me know if any of this seems relevant. What information do you have on your William and Timothy?

In any case, since your Fives family was in Kinsale, I'd love to hear any family lore you have about how and in what part of Kinsale they earned their living.

From reading this thread, is Ellen Renck's Fives also connected to ours only she has replied to a message which looked like it could have been for me, but wasn't sure as it wasn't addressed to anyone.

Kind regards
Kay

Hi Maureen

thanks for getting back to me. Did Timothy, William and Nancy have a brother called John, only the line of Fives that I have is a John Fives who married a Julia (in Ireland I think, before going to Liverpool) and apparently he had a brother called William who married twice and emigrated to the US. They were definately from County Cork.

Are yours the same Fives as mine? If they are not, it is highly likely that there is some connection somewhere as Fives is not a common name.

Kay

Residing at 750 Columbus av, NYC, he was naturalized 14 May 1914 in NY Supreme Ct (Vol 158, p. 280, 11 Jun 1914).

I haven't found a connection to my family yet, but the Fives name isn't common.
