Does anyone have an Andrew Flagg in their line? I am trying to find out who his father was. My uncle tells me that his mother, Ada Tonge Lester's (b. 1888) first husband was a Flagg who died in a car crash. Flagg had a son from a previous marriage named Andrew and Andrew visited their house in Hudson, Massachusetts when they were all kids (maybe 1920's) Ada eventually married John T. Thomas in 1919. Ada's oldest daughter Lucy was born in 1906 and I am trying to figure out if Flagg might have been her father.

Ada Tonge Lester b. 1888 in England dau. of John James and Lucy (Tonge) Lester

Thanks.

Hello Mr. Sinclair
It has been quite some time since I checked these boards! My apologies for the delay in replying to you.
The genealogy I have has been exhaustively researched by my grandmother Jane Cromarty. We don't have a great deal of information that far back, but it's always nice to make connections with other researchers!
Cheers,
Leah

I realize I am responding to an almost 10 year old post, but I am researching my mother's father's branch of our family which has led me back to Eleazer Flagg and Sally O'Doyle arriving in Stockton, NY in 1798. Their daughter Lucinda is the next link in my family (she is the older sister of the elder David in your family). My uncle is sending me a packet of information that has more about this whole side of the family that I will add to tree when it arrives next week. If you've learned more, I'd love to hear your findings.
Best, Regards, Amy

I have to 2 pencil prints of Singing Winds & Johnny No Shoes , appear to be pastels but colors have faded with age. My sister bought the prints in 1958 in Phoenix,Arizona as a gift for our mother.Saw something on eBay where they are worth about $50. not bad for a $1.50 investment. Original paintings are probably worth considerably more.

Charles, I came across a painting of "Joey Big Arrow' recently. On the back of the painting is a paper mat that has a picture of Monteague (in cowboy gear) and the following information on it:

MEET THE ARTIST
Monteague...whose grandfather was a government oxen freighter over the old Oregon trail and whose father is also a famous artist, was honestly "born to the brush." His western oil paintings and portraits of celebrated personalities hang in many noted museums.

Having spent his boyhood in the early thirties living in an old covered wagon among the American Indians on their reservations, he stands alone with his talent to capture the mischievous sparkle of the little ones, who in turn seem to capture the heart of the unwary visitor.

These little indians are from his own original creations, painted in his own unique style, and have already won several national awards.
---------
Not sure if this ties into your history of moving West or not.

:)

Re: Charles William Flagg

Lisa, been a while but finally traced Charles Wm Flaggs father down. He is, William Charles Flagg, b. Mar 18, 1819 in England d. abt. 1862. He arrived Apr. 1840 at Passamaquoddy, Maine at age 24. He volunteered Union Army Civil War, Pvt. Co. K Ohio 77th Infantry Reg't Oct. 30, 1861 - May 10, 1862. He was awarded the Grand Army of the Republic Badge for heroism. Wife, Sarah Ann Stewart b. Mar 1818 Allegheny Co., Pa d. 1910 lived to be 92 and was residing at the Ladies GAR Home in Swissvale, Pennsylvania at the time of her death. Sarah and William Married, Jul 26, 1843 Allegheny Co., Pa. They had two children; Charles Wm. and Anna Benena b. Nov 24, 1845 Etna, Bora Co. (Allegheny Co.,) Pa. In the 1860 census for Shaler, Allegheny Co., Pa Sarah, Charles and Anna are the only ones listed. By 1870 Sarah was living with daughter Anna in Etna, Allegheny, Pa. Is possible William in 1860 was already serving during the war or in training. If you go to my family tree, you can read up on the 77th Infantry. William served at the Battle of Shiloh, TN. I have not been able to find a death cert to confirm his death but think it is possible he died May 10,1862. Will need to research further.
Son Charles Wm Flagg Sr. also served Civil War Union Soldier, Private, Co. E. 63rd Reg't Pa Sep 9, 1861. He died on Nov 10, 1889 from consumption (TB). After researching his wife Margaret Davis's family, (mothers side), I have come across some information that leads me to believe that the family was of Delaware Indian decent. The Delaware tribe was common in the Eastern parts of Pa until other tribes and settlers pushed them farther into the Western parts of Pa like the Allegheny Valley then into the Ohio Valley as well.
There were many branches of the Delaware. They were moved out of so many areas that the tribe divided quite a bit over time.
Direct ancestors, on my fathers side, Waggoner, was of Delaware decent whose family followed David Ziesburger, the Moravian Missionary who founded and settled the villages of Shoenbrumn, and Ghnadehuten, Ohio. That side of the family chose to go back to the Allegheny Valley and was not part of the Massacre of Ghnadehutten, although I have found some of the Waggoners were. Cousins, Aunts, Uncles perhaps. The Native Americans were given English names and this is why I can not trace back Margaret's mother's family. I will have to go to the Library of Congress to research the Native American side if Pennsylvania will not release their records to genealogy sites like Ancestory.com. Would surely make things easier if they would. Am going to research more, maybe I will get lucky.
If you would like to view my tree, let me know. You can contact me at; char_kubas@msn.com. (underscore between char and kubas) and I will send you a invite to view. Hope this helps and sorry it took so long to get back to you. Char

I have come across a small catalog for Monteague prints. My mother was a big fan & bought many of his pictures when she traveled west. I'm not sure what date she bought those prints, which we no longer have, but back when they were purchased the wholesale prices were noted as:
Small $7.50
Large $15.00
Road runners $9.00

The catalog shows the following lithographs available:
Little Many Goats
Johnny Laughing Wolf
Yellow Moon
Billy Big Owl
Billy Roadrunner
Little Wildflower
Joey Big Arrow
Little Barefoot
Johnny Jackrabbit
Little Sunshine
Mary Sunflower
Jimmy Grey Hill
Little Wildwind
Yellow Feather
*
Roadrunner 101 (10" x 15")
Roadrunner 102 (10" x 15")

It also provides a retailer:
Gallup Indian Trading Company
P O Box 1358
1000 Highway 66 West
Gallup, NM 87301
505-863-3838

The booklet says: Monteague spent most of his growing up years among the Navajo & Zuni of the southwest and probably know them more intimately than any other artist engaged in painting these delightful people. * These reproductions shown here are of the happy (and sometimes sad) little ones as they live their lives on the rugged wide open spaces of the reservations. * Monteague owns his own press & does most of his own lithographic work to assure close fidelity to the original painting.

The B&W photos of Monteague shows him at about age 30? dressed in western attire with a cowboy hat.

Perhaps this will help those searching for info on Monteague.

Alice

Larry,

Thank you for your query. I have very little on Michael Flagg at this time but I am continuing my research on the 2nd York during the War of 1812. The regiment was drawn from men living in several townships at the Head of the Lake which later became Wentworth County and parts of Halton and Peel Co. I am also interested in Michael because he served with my ancestor, Private Ebenezer Blair, and the two men would have been acquainted with each other.

If you would like to see who else Michael was serving with you can find my published transcripts at http://www.ogs.on.ca/services/1812-militia.php.

Private Michael Flagg
Served Oct. 17 to 24, 1812 (D216). Deserted Oct. 25 to Nov. 24, 1812 (D220).

The Battle of Queenston Heights was fought on Oct. 13th. Michael and Ebenezer were serving in Capt. Hector S. McKay’s Company. Some of the men were doing guard duty while the others may have been working on defenses or improving roadways. There were a number of deserters but this was common in 1812. “Deserters” were men who had failed to report when a company was mustered. They would have to pay a fine if they did not have a reasonable excuse. The year 1811 had not been a good year for farmers and there was a shortage of food. The war years were also difficult for the settlers because they had to provide for their own families, feed and support the British military, and help defend the Niagara Peninsula. Families came first and men deserted to provide for them.

I have found no record of Michael in 1813 or 1814. He may have acquired an exemption from militia service, may have served in another regiment, or may have moved out of the area. A number of men in the 2nd York also served in some of the 4th and 5th Lincoln County Regiments.

If Michael had been a United Empire Loyalist he may have had a land grant in the area. There was a second wave of settlement as the British offered free land grants to Americans just prior to the war. In some areas the new arrivals outnumbered the Loyalists. A number of these late arrivals were members of passive religious groups like the Quakers and Mennonites who could claim exemption from military service.

I have made a note of your interest in Michael Flagg and will get back to you if I discover more about him. You will find my email address with my transcripts. Where was Michael living in 1851? Can you help me with any of the following information?

Biographical Information Wanted:
Birth: Year and place, name of parents
Marriage: Spouse and year
Death: Year and place
Place of residence during the war and/or after
Year arrived in the area
Any family history of the war
Any other family members in the militia

This information may eventually be published in a history of the 2nd York and the men who served in it during the War of 1812.

Fred Blair
Orillia, Ontario
The Michael Flagg that you speak of who lived in Southern Ontario around 1812 is believed to be my GGG GF. According to the Canadian census of 1851 and 1861 he was born in the U.S. in 1796, exactly where in the U.S. is information that I am very interested in. His son, Michael Flagg, my GG GF was born in Ontario between 1827 and 1830. He had a son David Flagg, my G GF, born in Elgin County Ontario. My GF was George Flagg who married Elizabeth Catherine McGregor in 1921 or 22. Their first born son, Russell, was my Father. All were born in Ontario, except Michael, 1796, in the U.S. I am the first generation born in the States since Michael in 1796. I am looking for information that leads me to Michael's (1796) father and further link me to the immigrant Thomas Flegg who settled in Watertown, Mass around 1630. Thanks, Larry Flagg

Michael Flagg of Ontario Update

According to the 1851 census of Canada, Michael Flagg's (born in Ontario in 1830) Father, also named Michael, was born in the United States in 1796. The census does not indicate where he was born in the United States. Again, I am trying to confirm whether this Flagg family line descends from the emigrant Thomas Flegg who settled in Watertown, Mass about 1631.

Enoch Flagg

I have reached a dead end in my ancestry research. My search ends with Enoch Flagg, born in 1822 in New Jersey and died in Lancaster, WI in 1891. I can trace Enoch's wife's family much further back in time but have not been able to determine who Enoch Flagg's parents were. No birth records exist in New Jersey for 1822; census records from 1820 and 1830 list families in the area with son's who are around his age but do not list names; Enoch's marriage record in 1849 states that his parents are deceased and Enoch's own death record has a blank where his parent's names should have been listed. Any suggestions?

Hi,

Not sure if you are still looking for information, but I just spent about 30mins doing a basic Google search for "Charles E B Flagg" - and I found quite a bit of information on him.

He was a surgeon in the Army during the Spanish American War, he saw combat in the Philippines, where he was recommended for a brevet promotion for gallantry while treated wounded men in the field of battle.

He wrote several medical papers about treating abdominal gunshot wounds in the field (back then, they would simply wait to see if you died or not - about 87% did die). He also recommended that Army medical units be "mobile" and ready to move with the battles, treating the wounded as close to the battle field as possible. The Army wasn't impressed with his ideas -- until they started using them 50 years later and called them M*A*S*H units!

In 1900, he was a Capt and Asst Surgeon at Fort Grant, an Army post.

I was researching him, because he "graded" the performance of my great-great-aunt, when she was a contract Army nurse during the Spanish American War. He graded her "excellent". At the time (1898), he was stationed at the 1st Corps Hospital in Macon, GA.

Flagg Family of Ontario

My name is Larry Flagg. My Father was Russell Flagg, born in Malahide, Ontario 1923 to George and Bessie Flagg, both born in Malahide in 1894 and 1900, respectively. George is the son of David and Sarah Flagg, both of the same area. David, born 1854, was the son of Michael and Rillis Flagg. Michael was born about 1830. It appears Michael Flagg was born in Ontario. That's where my research gap begins. I have read about Thomas Flagg who migrated to Watertown, Mass in the late 1600's and whose descendants lived in that area for generations. My search is to know if Thomas' descendants flow into my GG GF Michael of Ontario and when and how. You can contact me on DocsRocknRoll@aol.com with any info. Thanks, Larry Flagg

We have two of the pictures, lithographs. "Running Horse" and "Little Princess Snowflake". Bio on back states: Meet the Artist: "Monteague...whose grandfather was a government oxen freighter over the Oregon Trail and whose father is also a famous artist, was honestly 'born to the brush'. His western oil paintings and portraits of celebrated personalities hang in many noted museums. Having spent his boyhood in the early thirties living in an old covered wagon among the American Indians on their reservations, he stands alone with his talent to capture the mischievous sparkle of the little ones, who in turn seem to capture the heart of the unwary visitor.
These little Indians are from his own original creations, painted in his own unique style, and havealready won several national awards."

Hope this is helpful. He must be registered in museums in the West. There is a photo of him in Bio: Cowboy hat, black, long face, wider at the brow, deep set eyes, neckerchief, shirt pocket open as if holding a "chaw"!

Thank you Debbie. I don't believe that our Flaggs came from Indiana. They lived on Wheeling Island, WV and came from Pennsylvania. That's the information I have.
Maybe they are related in some way.

Lisa

Hi,
I am just now reading this reply. Yes Margaret Davis' may be the Indian or it may be her mother in law. The legend is that they maried into the Flagg family. Any information of tribe or years or even the Name of Charles Flagg Sr.'s Dad and Mom would help.

Thank you,
Lisa

I have 6 paintings signed by monteague flagg. They were given to my parents at least 50 years ago by my Aunt who was from Phoenix. I was trying to find out some information on these paintings. She gave my parents all six. They had the six of us. Neither of my parents are still living. I was given all six paintings in 1981. And they have moved with me every time. Can anyone tell me something about the artwork. They are: Billy Big Wolf, Little Falling Snow, Little Moonlight, Little Summer Winds, Jack Rabbit Joe and Little Joe Sun-up. These paintings are part of my childhood my father was a 30 year veteran and retired as a Colonel in the army. Every home we lived in the six paintings were always hanging in our living room or dining room. Please contact me if you have any information.
Sincerely
