Re: revolutionary war

I have just finished a book on the Flaglers of SC & VA. Our patriarch is William Flagler of Duchess County. He was originally in Van Vechten's company in May 13 1776 but deserted on May 21. Looks like he went straight to NY City to join the British. Served the rest of the war with the New York Volunteers in both the Northern Campaign and then in the Southern Campaign in Fla, Ga, and mostly SC. He returned to NY in Aug 1782 but apparently wasn't very welcome. He returned to SC and married a woman whose first two husbands fought with Marion. He became a Captain in the SC militia and a prominent landowner. He attained the rank of Sergeant and was also the Quartermaster of a calvary troop for a period.

Also in the NY family, one Simon Flagler worked with the British and left for Canada. Another two David and John apparently worked both sides but are carried on the NY militia roles (6th Regiment militia Duchess Co).

William's parents were Zacharia Flagler (1720) and Sarah Barton.

The following is obtained from: Frank J Doherty, The Settlers of the Beekman Patent, Dutchess County, New York, (A Genealogical and Historical Study of all the 18th Century Settlers in the Patent) (Volume 5 on CD, Pleasant Valley, New York; Library of Congress Card #90-82282, ISBN Set # 0-9626443-0-7)

I. Zacharias FLAGLER, b. 1676 in Germany; m. 3rd, 1711, Ulster Co., NY,, widow Anna Elizabeth (HOBIN) SCHULTZ.
2. i. Philip Solomon FLAGLER, b.21 Aug 1701, Germany; m. before 1726, Anna Margaretha DOP.
5. ii. Zacharias FLAGLER, bapt. 30 May 1726; m. ca. 1750, Catherine WINEGAR
16. iv. Zacharias FLAGLER, b. 17 Sept 1763; m. 2nd Catherine COLLINS
vii. Philip S. FLAGLER, b. 12 June 1799; m. 20 Dec 1825 in Herkimer Co., NY, Nancy DYGERT. They were in Akron, OH by 1841. By 1850, Philip S. FLAGLER is living in East Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY, with Nancy; Cathrin age 21; Walter, age 19; William, age 16; Albert, age 10; and Oscar, age 6. No George Z. FLAGLER is listed, but, if he was born in 1828/30 he probably would be on his own. There are pages of detailed information on these FLAGLER’s in Doherty’s CD/book.

There is listed in the 1850 census for Beekman Township, Dutchess Co., NY, a George D. FLAGLER, age 23 (born about 1827) a Laborer, born in New York; living with Phebe Jane FLAGLER, age 17, (Wife?), born in NY; and Sarah Simpson, age 9. Living next to George D. is a Gilbert FLAGLER, age 49, a farmer born in NY and living with Gilbert is a William CLARKSON, age 23, born in NY.

Hope this helps.

Chuck
100 yr gap

I am tryimg to trace the lineage of George Z. Flagler, born.abt
1828/1830 in Henkimes or Duchess county. My information has him moving to Ohio in 1838 which would have put him at the age of 10/12. U.S.census of 1880 has his birth place as Ohio??? He married Phebe J. Clarkson of Duchess County on 12/27/1848. He then moved to Dwight, Illinois in 1855. From that time forward I have family information.

Before 1828-1830 the information is very sketchy. I have an old note that says Goerge Z. was the s/o Philip Flagler
(a farmer) and Nancy( Maiden name maybe Daggent). And that Philip was the s/o Zacharias Flagler. Zacharias who came to the states abt. 1711, from France, which most likely is Wethiem Fanconia. There is also a side note that says Zacharias or Philip may have had 11 childern.
The time between the birth of George Z. Flagler and the time Zacharias came to the states is over 100yrs.
Need a lot of help filling the gap.
thanks to all
donna quayle anderson
I am looking for a John G. Flagler who married Elizabeth White in Sumter Co., SC before 1810. She was the daughter of Arthur and Ellen White. After John's death, she married Harvey Nettles. The one daughter I know about is Sarah Caroline Flagler b. 1813 who married John Hancock Baxter. They both died in Mississippi. Elizabeth's sister, Naomi White Harvin is my husband's ggg-grandmother. I wonder if the Margaret Eleanor Flagler b. 1810 is another daughter of John and Elizabeth.

Hi Joyce!
Thank you for your information. I have traced my "Flagler's" back to Germany. My Great Grandfather "Peter" arrived here in 1872. He came from Urphar, Wertheim and I am trying to obtain records. They spelled the name "Flegler" in Germany. If this helps you let me know. Thanks for your responce.
Earl Flagler

Looking for other children he might have had besides Anna Magdalena Elisabetha, b. 1712 at West Camp. Hoping to find a Leonard.

Pat
David, I think that one of Collins' desendents married into my family line of Scanlon. William Scanlon married a woman named Arcelia. I think that she was Arcelia Flagler who grew up on a farm very close to William. Arcelia was the daughter of John and Drucilla(sp). John, was a son of Collins. Please email me @ sigepbear@msn.com. I just found Arcelia Flagler last night and have a lot of Scanlon info. Warren

I know that over the years the name has changed which makes this a harder search. Any information on ADA FLAGLER would be greatly appreciated so I can know if this is a valid link to my past.

My great grandfather FRANK S.
I am not of African American Heritage but I thought that I would let you know that I found one entry in the Saratoga County Court House Census records in Balston Spa N.Y. The mans name was Lilly Flagler, in the 1860 census he was listed as a "black man born in 1781 at 84 years old." He was a boarder in the home of Henry and Jane Harrison and six children. I hope that this info is helpful to you. I know that geneolgy can some times lead to dead ends. I hope that this info can fill in a blank spot in your research. David

If you were able to trace all the way back ti Viet Flagler and Zachariah Flagler, his son the one who emigrated to the U.S. then we are related. It is my understanding that all the Flagler's in the U.S. all are related. We are decendants of Zachariah and one of his 3 wives. I have been sick and in the VA hospital from July 14th until Sep 6th and am just now getting better.
