I came across the Flater Cemetary in Bloomfield, In and think I found the head stones for Michael and Rachel. Do you know where they were buried? The Flater Cemetary has very old headstones which made it very hard to read some of the names and dates. But Michael's was still in good shape, in fact it looked like a military headstone done in the white slate.

Am hoping someone either has access to, or has already transcribed, the will of George Flater b abt 1757 in Germany died 1814 in Baltimore Co MD; wife's name supposed to be Anna Maria; children John, Philip, Ludwig (or Lutrick), Andrew (Andreas), Michael, Catharine, George and Peter. I've been unable to locate a listing for a will - also looking for a will or documented data on his father George (I have NO info on him) who supposedly had at least 3 sons, George (mentioned above), Lutwick & Philip.

We are looking for the connection of Magdalene Brown to George Brown I (b. 1690 England/d. bef. 24 Feb 1770 Pipe Creek, Frederick Co, MD). (b. 02 Feb.1771 Balto. Co., MD). She mar. Shadrach Bush, Jr. 1798 in Balto. Co., MD, they had 8 children. It is believed that Magdalene was a sister of John Brown, Jr. who mar. Ann Marie/Mary Ports. "In the 1902 History of St. Paul's Church, Arcadia, MD the names of Magdalene Brown, Ann Maria [Ports] Brown, and John Brown [Jr.] are listed as confirmed in 1794." I do see the connection of John BROWN , Jr. s\o Ruth McQueen & John Brown, Sr. (b. MD) & gs\o Mary Stevenson & George Brown. Ann Mary Ports was the d\o Elizabeth Margaret & Phillip Ports (d. Balto Co., MD)

I do see the connection of Ruth Brown the d\o Ruth Stansbury & Nicholas Hall Brown (b. MD) & gd\o mary hall & George Brown. Ruth was 2nd wife of Jacob Flater mar. 11 Oct. 1844 Carroll Co., MD, they had 7 children. The 1st wife of Jacob Flater was Elisabeth Bush mar. 08 Mar, 1838, Carroll Co., MD, they had 1 child. Elisabeth was d\o Magdalene Brown & Shadrach Bush, Jr., (b. Balto Co., MD) & gd\o Sarah Osborn/Osburn & Shadrach Bush, Sr.

I have not found the connection of Achash/Achaah Brown the d\o Annis Knight & Joseph Brown (b. MA) & gd\o Prudence Prentice & Josiah Brown. Achash was a 1st cousin of Ruth (Brown) Flater. Achash mar. John Flater on 29 Apr. 1842 in Carroll Co., MD.

I do see the connection of Celinda Brown the d\o Eliza Ann Bunch & Elias Brown (b. Balto Co., MD) & gd\o Gemima Stocksdale & John BROWN (b. MD) . Celinda mar. Hezekiah Flater (b. MD) on 15 July 1848 in Darke Co., OH.
Hi Kathy--I am giving you the name and address of the person I believe can be of great assistance to you. She has extensive research on the Flaters of Carroll County. She does not have a computer so I am an intermediator (so to speak). My research on the Flaters is very limited.

Mrs. Delight H. My grandfather somehow got to San Francisco, Callifornia and married my grandmother, Catherine Manley. If you are a member of this family or if you have any info about this family, please e-mail me.
Elizabeth BUSH-Jacob FLATER mar. 1838 Carroll Co., MD

I am one of a group of 7 that is compiling a book on the BUSH family 1760s Baltimore/Carroll Co., MD. I noticed that someone had listed the mother of James M. FLATER as Ruth BROWN. This is not accurate He was the only child of Elizabeth Bush. Elizabeth BUSH was the 8th child of M. (BROWN) and S. BUSH, Jr. of Carroll Co., MD. Elizabeth BUSH (b. abt. 1816) married Jacob FLATER 08 Mar, 1838, there son James M. FLATER was born in Dec. 1843. Apparently Elizabeth died soon thereafter as Jacob FLATER was married second to Ruth BROWN on 11 Oct. 1844 in Carroll Co., MD, they then moved to Richland Township, Greene Co., IN.

Yes Susan another "lost" Brown! This time "my" Brown

"Our first in the Americas ancestor (as far as we know) was Shadrack Bush (Sr.) probably from England. He was in Baltimore Co., MD by 1761 when he purchased a tract of land. He was married to Sarah Osborn (reputed to be Native American) Their only child was Shadrach Bush, Jr. (b: 23 March 1768 in Baltimore Co., MD) who married Magdalene BROWN (b: 02 Feb. 1771, probably in Baltimore Co., MD). They had 8 children. I am thinking Magdalene was the daughter of John Brown, Sr. and Ruth/Elizabeth McQueen. The reason I am thinking this is because John Brown (Jr.), Ann Maria (Ports) Brown, and Magdalene were the only Browns that attended the church when they opened in 1794. Plus there are a lot of Brown's living in Pipe Creek Hundred where the Bush family lived and Brown witnesses to their wills, etc. Yes Elizabeth Bush, who was the first wife of Jacob Flater), was their 8th child!
Susan,

On the Brown-Richardson connection-I received the following from Allison Garman akgar@juno.com. "I don't know if this will help you and I haven't researched this branch of the family yet, but I have an Anne BROWN married 19 Dec 1781(Baltimore Co.Marriage Lic.) to Richard RICHARDS (1758-1834). The family group sheet and ancestor chart that a cousin gave me shows that Anne BROWN RICHARDS' father was John Brown (d. 1810), who's parents were George BROWN (1714-1770) and Mary Stevenson."

There is a very good ancestry.com Brown Family Tree by David N. Arasmith at >http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&db=arasd...;. I have e-mailed him but never received a reply. Belinda Brown is there (but not "my" Magdelena Brown. He has no Flater data nor did I find any Flater-Richards data on a search!

That's who I show Magdelina Brown Bush belonging to but problem is I got this project from someone else who got it from someone who didn't document anything. My part of the project is to "clean it up" and document it and thus far I've not got anything but the same church records you have. Sort of going on the "perponderance of evidence" theory (GRIN)

After reading your posts, I think we might want to "pool our resources" on the Browns and Flaters as we clearly are working on the same bunch and frankly, the stuff I've found on George Brown I simply HAS to be researched. I've found him born as early as 1695 and as late as 1730, children credited to him and Mary (or Nancy as the case may be--yet another problem) being born in 1761 when his wife was reportedly born in 1700 (I DOUBT she was having babies at age 61...)

I've fared a bit better with the Flater line but still have a real problem with Isabella Elizabeth Flater, d/o John & Rebecca Troyer Flater that is making me nuts.

I initially got involved working on the Richard Richards/Isabell Flater family--this brought me back to the Brown family when their son Stephen J. Richards married Hannah Brown, daughter of Nathan Brown & Nancy Gist (her half sister Mary was married to Richard Richards brother Jesse, just to complicate things...)
When I started working on Nathan Brown, son of John Brown & Jemima Stocksdale, all heck broke loose as the Stocksdales and Richards have a LONG history....

From what I can find, John Brown m. Jemima was the son of John Brown and Elizabeth Unknown. This is the John who married 2nd Anna Mary Ports. It goes back from there as you know.

While messing with the Iowa gang, I found a burial of a James M. Flater b 1842 d 1818 at Inland Cemetery in Cedar Co IA, noted as being a member of the G.A.R.
Wondering if this is the son of Jacob & Elizabeth since the dates are so close and he's right in there with a bunch of other Flater folks I'm working on.

I just took a second look at my "disconnected" Iowa bunch and this John doesn't appear to be the son of the Flater/Troyer union as his middle initial is W. rather than N. and I found burial records for this family on which the death date also does not match.

I'm going to post these "unconnected" lines to see if anyone wants to claim them.

That would be great. I'll try to clean mine up as well so we can compare the two--I know the Browns are TOTALLY messed up when it gets back to George I but until I can get down to the library and see if I can find some real documentation on them instead of all these messed up dates that are floating around I don't know what else to do with them. (I'm disabled and our car is down right now)

As for the Flater family, I've got a bunch of "disconnected" ones I think may be related to the Darke Co bunch who turned up in Muscatine and adjacent Cedar Co IA. All seem to be b MD and have ties to either OH or IN and one family turns up on the same property previously owned by Richard and Isabel Flater Richards. I strongly suspect this one, a John Flater, wife Rebecca, children Granville E, Francis, Mary I. and Katie, to be the John Nicholas Flater, listed in the Flaters of Carroll Co MD as son of John & Rebecca Troyer Flater and brother to Isabel, but can't prove it at this point. All I've found on him is a plat map showing him in Goshen Twp Muscatine Co and the 1880 census (and this is just about when Richard & Isabel leave Muscatine for Greene co IA) but I haven't really delved into him too much yet.

The Ann "Nancy" Brown m. Richard Richards is part of this tribe. Their son Stephen Richards married Catherine Stocksdale and produced among others the Richard Richards married to Isabel Flater.

Like the Flaters, the Richards also have multiple ties into the Brown line.

The Richard Richards who married Catherine Stocksdale is the son of Richard Richards m. Sarah Hooker. Of their children, Richard Richards m Ann Brown (d/o John Brown and Elizabeth Ruth McQueen) and Sarah Richards m. Edward Brown (s/o John Brown & Elizabeth Ruth McQueen) Their daughter Ruth Brown m John Algire and one of THEIR daughters Nancy Algire m Joshua Brown (and around and around it goes). Another of the Algire children, Ruth, married into the TROYER family (related to the FLATER group) and two of the Algire children married into the FOWBLE family, another MD to OH group)

I've looked at the Arasmith tree already--I've pretty well scoured the net over the last 3 months on Richards and Brown and Fetters and Flater and Gist but every once in a while I find some hidden little item...
I've got a FLATER/RICHARDS mystery I can't unravel which I will post elsewhere but on this post, I can add that
Aschas was John Flater's 2nd wife (first was Rebecca TROYER) and that on both the 1850 and 1860 census Aschas was noted as being insane (not that that's any help to the cause)

Under the listing of George Brown & Mary Hall's children I can fill in some blanks:
Nancy Anna Brown b 16 Mar 1778 m. David Keefer
Josiah Brown b 07 Feb 1783 d 07 Aug 1834 m Sarah Stansbury
Jemima Brown m Henry Stevenson
Sarah Brown m. John Jones

I knew nothing of Belinda Brown--where did you find her?

Boy I wish I had known all this when I was in Iowa last month...

Funny thing is I found him with Matilda but didn't know it was the same one who had been married to Josephine...had to shuffle Ella and John to the right mother to get it straight. Ironically, I had found that bio on Bruce Francis and WONDERED if that was the same Ella but wasn't sure. Now the bio has a home too!
I had a problem matching the two James listings up because the ages on the census and middle initials were not same as well.

One interesting thing hopped out at me in all this--the lady from Windom MN....Windom is a small town in Cottonwood Co--Ironically Rebecca Richards Groves, granddaughter of Richard and Isabel Flater Richards via their son Stephen, lived in nearby Jeffers MN and her daughter Florence Groves Carlsblom resided in Windom MN. The world getting smaller and smaller....

James family was one of the Flater group I found right around the same area (within 10 miles or so) of where Richard Richards and Isabel Flater Richards had resided. I'm slowly posting the others to see if anyone connects to them.
My mother gave me the following information about my grandfather's maternal family:

Nate (?Nathaniel) Flater, who was about 80 in 1946, and farmed near Lake Erie.

He would have had a daughter, or sister who married a KEMP and had a son, PERCY GEORGE KEMP. Does that match your information at all?

Dear Rose, Sue and all
I am researching the Flater line as well. The line I am researching goes back to the mid 1700's to 3 German brothers who came to America during the Rev. War. They were George Flater II, Phillip Flater, and Ludwick Flater. I am interested in the information on the following people:

George Flater II/ Anna Marie
George Flater III/ P. Manning
Rachel Flater/ John Kidd
John W. Kidd/ ____ Hughes (I have this data)
Frank Kidd/ Claudine Kidd
Frank Preston Kidd/ Ielene Eva Seals

I look forward to hearing from some of you.
