Re: Origin

The best answer I could find was that the name Flathers is an occupational name for a 'maker of flathes'. A flathe being a flat custard pie, similar to flan. I believe I found that in a book on surnames by Ernest Weekly. The name was probably from Ireland and without the ending 's'. Eventually, after settling in the area of Yorkshire England (mainly in Bradford and Leeds), it became the English "Flathers". So similar to a name like Baker, a flather was a specialized cook of some type. There are also references in other books to alternate spellings of flath and flathe as being a type of fish (like a skate) and also a "lord". I haven't checked to see if this type of fish is found around Ireland or not. I also tend to think if this was linked with a 'lordship' it would be more well known. Hope this helps to some degree. Would love to hear anyone else's research on the subject.

Flathers in Massachusetts

Seeking information on Flathers line that came in 1854 to Massachusetts. Mother was Mary A. (Kay) Flathers born 1823 (Yorkshire) who was married to Eli Flathers born 1818 (Leeds) in 1842 in Leeds. Oldest daughter Elizabeth born 1843 in England who married Joseph Webster, settled in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Sons were: George b. abt. 1849, (Eng.) James b. abt. 1851, (Eng.) Joseph b. abt. 1852 (Eng.) and Samuel born 1854 in Fall River, Massachusetts. It is not known if Eli came to America. Mary A. was married to Alfred Robinson in 1860 Census and living in New Bedford. Seeking any information on this line which stayed mainly in the Lawrence, Danvers, Lowell, Andover, Springfield, Haverhill and Edgartown (Dukes County) areas. Eli Flathers was the son of William Flathers and Margaret ? and was baptized in St. Peter's Parish in Leeds. I have been unable to find any immigration information or passenger lists for Mary between 1853 - 1854. Any help would be appreciated. I am a descendant of Samuel K. Flathers.
