Flatts Out Of Methwold, Norfolk County, England

I recently embarked on an 'update' project for the many Flatts we have in our line living in North Dakota during the 1930 census. During the process I discovered a Flatt living in Mountrail County which I didn't have in my database so off I went on another research journey. From that initial query, I discovered another line of Flatts coming out of Methwold, England. The futherest one back is a Robert (with no info) but the son is a Joseph born about 1793. At first look, it appeared that Joseph went right into Wisconsin/Illinois; however, some of the descendants indicate Canadian birth or their ancestor of Canadian birth. That gets me now thinking we have another connection to our line of Josiah (Jesse) b. 1832, Norfolk County, England. We are positive now that this Joseph, our Jesse, and two others (James b. 1810, Jonathan b. 1823) came out of England with descendants in both Canada and US. We believe they are connected to James b. abt 1777. I would be happy to hear from anyone who might have connections or information on these Flatts from Norfolk County and I am more than eager to share what I have.

Several of Joseph P (aka Jo, JP and Jonas)and Louisa Livingston Flatt's children moved to and settled in Ashland, KY. My great grandmother Sarah Alice Flatt Williams (m, Alfred Canous Williams) is one of their daughters. Joseph and Louisa married in 1879 or 1880. Louisa died in 1914 and is buried in Muhlenberg Co.

Joseph and Louisa's children also include: Lorenzo Dow Flatt (m. Pearlie Williams-I believe a sister to the above Alfred Canous WIlliams), Willie Flatt, Lura Belle Flatt, Martha Flatt (who also married a Williams sibling and settled in Ashland KY), Benjamin Flatt (m Elizabeth Level and also settled in Ashland KY), one record lists their other child as Birdie. I do not think this is her name. They had 7 children together.

Joseph had a son George G Flatt (b abt 1877) from a previous marriage to Amanda Vannay Flatt.

Joseph's mother was Annie Flatt (b. NC abt 1805)

He was a Baptist minister and they lived in Jamaica the rest of their lives. Jemima was from Stoke Ferry, Norfolk, and John originally from Brayford, Devon. Obituary: Jo Cox, 80, Dies

Jo Cox, 80, a private piano teacher, died of pancreatic cancer on March 26, 2009 at Sibley Hospital.

Cox moved to McLean in 1971. From 1976 until her death, she volunteered with The Hospitality and Information Service, an organization dedicated to fostering relationships within the area’s diplomatic community. She was a passionate cook as well as an avid watercolorist.

Cox was born to Canadian parents, Robert Jack and Dorothy Duncan Flatt, in Chicago and was raised in Thunder Bay, Ontario. She was a graduate of the Letchford School of Design in Toronto. While living in Canada, she worked as a character actress for national radio programs.

In 1948, she moved to Houston, Texas with her then-husband David Lowe Stirton. Cox raised six children in Houston. The couple divorced in 1966 and Cox began teaching piano privately. She wed John B. Cox in 1967 and moved to Lake Valhalla in Morris County, N.J. Jo and John were married for 40 years.

She is survived by husband John B. Cox of McLean,
former husband David Lowe Stirton of Houston, Texas,
twins Kirk Stirton of New Orleans, La. and Lindy Stirton of McLean [Virginia],
twins Heather Stirton Gradison of Washington, D.C. and Betsy Stirton Nugent of Manassas, Va. (husband Steve Nugent),

JERRY FLATT Jerry O'Dell Flatt, 68, of Henderson, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 18, 2009, after a courageous two-year battle with emphysema and lung cancer, in the loving care of his family and an extraordinary team of Nathan Adelson Hospice caregivers. He was born April 6, 1941, in Big Spring, Texas, and resided in Nevada for over 45 years. Jerry was a retired electronic communications sales manager and an avid golfer. He also designed and maintained web sites for many non-profit outreach organizations such as the Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Nevada (OCAN), the Beth Foundation (youth suicide prevention) and the Surviving Suicide Loss Bereavement Support Group. Are you also descended from this line. I am a descendant of John's daughter Honor (m. James Phillips/Philips). I do not know much about the Flatt family other than what I have seen online. I do have a copy of John Flatt's pension papers, but little else. I would love to hear more specifics about the family and some pictures and details of descendants would be great as well.

I don't think these are the same. I believe your John Burchett and Ida Elizabeth Flatt were married in 1912. My John Burchett married Nelvina (Melvina, Nell Vina, Vina, Viney...I have seen all spellings in census, etc.) in 1861.

Nelvina lived from abt 1840 to sometime between 1910 & 1920. They had eleven children: John Jr, Carol, Ben, Fate (Lafayette), Mary, Martha, Ollie Florence (my ggrandmother), Evaleena (El), Sarah, Dennis, and Dora...not in that order.

In 1880, the lived in Clay County. My gggrandmother is listed as Melvina there. John's mom, Rachael, lived with them. In 1900, John had apparantly died. Nelvina (or Viney as listed there) lived with one of her sons. John was in the civil war at some point, because I have found the widow's pension record. (She's listed as Melvina there.)

I know my grandmother (Vella Mae Smith) was related to Lester somehow. I just can't find the connection. She said they were cousins...don't know which...1st, 2nd, etc., and she would talk about when they were young and he would come over and they would get together and "play music". Her parents were Ben Wheeler Smith and Ollie Florence Burchett.

Thanks for trying to help. I just want some sort of 'break through'. I have my dad's family back to the 1600's, but this part of my family...the part I want to know about most...is hiding somewhere.

Billie, I was able to locate and have a wonderful visit with Opal Flatt McNutt and her husband Dima in September 2001. I was also able to visit the Witts Springs Cemetery, and located the markers for Washington Alvin Flatt and America Elizabeth Hiett Flatt, and their son, Alden. Thank you for your help. Pamela

My GGgrandmother was a Flatt. I know she was from Jackson County, lived in Overton (I think) and Clay Counties.

Her husband was John Burchett. My grandmother told me she and Lester were cousins so I am looking somewhere in that line...just don't know where.

I don't know what Robert McKinley Flatt's parents were because I was working finding his information first.....I am getting information about him and passing it to my cousin that I just found in Oregon and I am in Illinois. She is a cousin on my fathers side. I have a x-widowed aunt that lives in Oklahoma last I heard....Doris ? (Flatt) ?
Don't know if she ever remarried after divorced my uncle. Uncle Louis or Lewis (I think the 1st)was married to Doris and they had 2 or 3 kids Louis Lee Flatt, Becky (Flatt), not sure which last was boy I think. They live in Oklahoma and possibly Oklahoma City.....because my uncle was staying with them for a short time whenever they found him in the front yard past away.

Travis, I'm sorry but your info on Delitha is wrong. She was my mother's mother and she was married twice. The first marriage was to John Preston Farmer on September 20, 1893 in Canadian Co. OK. He died Dec.11,1911 and she married my grandfather, Jefferson Pinley on August 30, 1913 in Maxwell, OK. By John Farmer she had seven children, William Lee, Virgil Amos, Fronie Arizona, Versie Helen, Wesley Marion, Mamie Aslee, and Truman Travis (Jack). By Jefferson she had six children, Della, Pearl, Myrtle, Alma, Allie, Rick's Father, and Gertie, my mother. Jefferson also had ten children from his first wife that Delitha helped him raise, Clearence, Ira, Lula, Frank, Leon,Emma, Elmer, and three others on the list were all males but no names for. Delitha was born May 31,1879 and died on May 31, 1931 in Pontotoc Co., OK. Her father's name was William J. Flatt and her mother's name was Lackie Tipton. According to the information I have, Lester
Raymond Flatt, b. 1914, was the son of
Isaac Columbus Flatt, b. 15 Apr 1881,
Jackson Co., TN; d. 20 Jun 1962 White Co., TN.
Isaac married Nannie Mae Haney, daughter of
Cimeon Haney and Sarah Jackson. Nannie Mae
was born 12 Jul 1877; d. 19 Jul 1935.

Lester's brothers and sisters were, Andrew
Jackson Flatt, Leonard McHenry Flatt,
Sarah Emaline Flatt, Clara Dee Flatt,
Simeon "Sim" Denton Flatt, Dora Belle Flatt,
Lula Edna Flatt, and Eunice Nola Flatt.

I show that Isacc Columbus Flatt was the son
of Jones H. Flatt and Mariam Fox, daughter
of Bartlet Fox and Mariam Basham. Jones H. Flatt
was the son of Isaac Columbus Flatt, Sr. and Sarah Ann
"Sally" Brown, daughter of John Brown and
Elizabeth Wheeler.

Right now the info I listed is all that I know. My father met Lester and they discussed the fact that their gr. gr. grandfathers were brothers, Benjamin and John, and my father listed just that Lesters parents were Ike and Nan. I will contact my father to see if he knows anything beyond that, but that information is all that he placed in his genealogy book, as Lester is not a direct line decendant in our family, but is a cousin to my father. I'll keep on this just to see if my father knows more and will keep you posted.

grandma Eliza F. Brown.who married Ira Columbus Kirby.
Eliza & Ira had a daughter Laura Kirby who married Harve Stout.Harve & Laura were parents to my Father-in-law Louis Stout.

Did Delitha Flatt have a cousin named Alvin Flatt (son of Josiah and Malinda)? I'm trying to find what happened to Alvin A. and his wife, America Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Hiett Flatt after 1910.
