Dear Theo,
My maternal grandfather, Harry Flaum, was born in 1890 in Gostynin, Poland the son of Yehuda Laibe and Sarah Bessie (Sakalofski) Flumenbaum. He was one of nine siblings. He arrived in America having embarked from London in 1909 under the name Flambaum as noted on his ship's manifest. At Ellis Island the name changed to Flum. He married Rose Pressman in 1917. Together they had five children. Hyman, Morris, Lilly, Esther and Bernice. Hyman, Lilly and Bernice (my mother) matured to adulthood. They lived in Brooklyn, NY. My grandfather was a tailor. My grandmother died on Aug. 14, 1943, my grandfather died on May 18, 1954. He went to HIAS after the war to try and see if any of his siblings had made their way to the US - to no avail. I have since been in touch with Mr. Gunar Berg of Hias. He said the files are now stored at the YIVO Institute in NYC. I plan on going there this coming summer to search myself. If you have any information that might shed some light on my search kindly email me. Regards, Richard M. Cohen.

Hi,
Please forgive me for taking almost 6 years to get back to you. My maternal grandfather, Harry Flaum, came to America through Ellis Island in 1909. He came from Gostynin, a small shtetl about 75 kilometers NW of Warsaw. His parents were Yehuda Laibe and Sarah Bessie (Sakalofski) Flumenbaum. He was one of nine children. He travelled from Poland through Germany and arrived in London's East End living on Plumber's Lane until he emigrated to America. The name on the ship's manifest was listed as Flambaum. At Ellis Island it was shortened to Flum. When my uncle went to school it beacme Flaum which was my mother's (Bernice) maiden name. I have a picture of my grandfather when he came to America. It would be interesting to compare photos. After the war he went to HIAS in NYC to see if he could locate any of his siblings who might have emigrated to America - to no avail.
I contacted Mr. Gunar Berg of HIAS who told me that most likely those records are stored at the YIVO Institute in NYC. I am still planning to go and search these records myself. I do not have the names of his siblings. If I found the records I would have a much better idea of who to contact. Let me know what has transpired during these past years on your search. Sadly my mother, Bernice Flaum Cohen, passed away in 2004. Her brother, Hyman Flaum, and sister, Lillian Flaum Scolnick, are deceased as well. My grandmother was Rose Pressman Flaum and they were married in Brooklyn on April 22, 1917. My grandmother died on August 14, 1943. My grandfather remarried on Januray 17, 1948 to Sadie Barr. Grandfather died on May 18, 1954. Sadie
died on Sept. 09, 1960.

Hi Steve,

We conversed a few years ago about Flaum/Pflaum research and I wonder if you're still out there researching. We just did the DNA testing on our Pflaums and found that we're not related to other Pflaums who hailed from Germany not far from mine. Wonder if you've considered being tested too?

Hello Flaum researchers-

I am a Pflaum with ancestry in Bavaria coming to western Ohio. My branch later went to Pittsburgh.

My father and cousin are in the midst of submitting YDNA tests to www.familytreeDNA.com. If there are any Flaums who would like to compare results, please contact me. If you haven't gotten a male in your Flaum line tested, I can tell you how to do so at a discount. If you don't understand what testing is but are intrigued, I can help you a bit there too.

Erin Pflaum Nikitchyuk
nikit@charter.net or ane@bigfoot.com

Dear Richard,

I'm interested in learning more about your Harry Flaum. My husband's maternal family are the FLAMBAUMs. While I have traced his paternal line (the FLAMHOLTZes) back to the mid-1700s, I'm just starting with the FLAMBAUMs. We know that one of the relatives changed his name to Harry FLAUM shortly after coming to the US. I'm pretty sure that I have a photo of him, possibly with Louis FLAMBAUM, our grandfather. Could you tell me where your Harry Flaum settled and anything else you know about him so that I can determine if we're looking for relatives.

Hoping to hear from you,
Cathy J.
My maternal grandfather was Harry Flum. When my mother's older brother went to school the teacher added an 'a.' The name became Flaum. Grandfather Harry came from Gostynin, Poland. He was one of nine brothers and sisters.
His parents were Yehuda Laebe and Basha Sureh Flumenbaum. I found his entry from www.ellisislandrecords.org as Harry Flambaum. I am still looking for his social security application (freedom of information act) that would help to shed light on his actual birthdate, etc.
Is any of this information helpful to you?
Please let me know.
Thanks,
Richard Cohen

Hi Steve,

I'm also researching Pflaums in Ohio and PA. My Pflaums centered around the Dayton area and apparently came through PA. (My g-grandfather then left Dayton for Pittsburgh). I have reason to believe they may have come through Texas as well.
I have been told that my grandmother's family came from Alsace, which could just be a mix-up because she married a Pflaum. I love sharing data and I am also in regular contact with a number of other Pflaum researchers. We pass leads onto eachother. If you'd like to share with us, send me an e-mail with your contact info and I'll add you to my address book for Pflaum researchers.

- Erin (Pflaum) Nikitchyuk - ane@bigfoot.com

I have been researching the Blaum name of my tree. The original spelling was Pflaum. My Great grandfather was John Blaum born 3-11-1885 and died May 16, 1961 in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. John Blaum was the son of Philip Blaum and Helen Wideman. I believe that Philip was born in Bayern, Germany before his parents Paul Blaum or Pflaum came to the United States. Could there be a connection?
