Dear Flavelle people out there......
I have to confess that I have never posted on one of these things before in my life (!) so please bear with me......
I am a student who has been studying her family tree with eagerness.... over the last 7 years completing a tree in some parts that reaches back into the 15th century... I have worked very hard to gain all my research and would hope that some of it may be of use to others...
However I seem to be finding the Flavelle family very elusive... in fact I get as far back as about 1750 and the line just stops... this is naturally an embarassment as Flavelle is my actual family name....
I wonder if any of you have any leads on the following......
My Grandfather Peter Flavelle was born in Leicester with as younger sister who was called Pat. Their parents were Herbert and Doris (nee Goddard/Gottheit).
Herbert was one of a large familyof around 12 which included Joseph (Joe) Fellows, Sarah Jane (Sally), Louisa (Louie) Fellows, Wilhelmina (Minnie) Amelia, Esther, James, Zachariah and Ernest (all died in infancy) Elisheba/Elizabeth (Elsie) May, David Fellows and of course Herbert Fellows.... All I think were born in Sedgley - Staff. which as I'm sure you all know seems to be the origins of most Flavell descendants.....
Joseph the eldest went off to America and married a lady called Agnes Nimms Millar and had two children - my grandads cousins... Betty Lou and Leicester .... Unfortunetly Leicester died in his teens of what my grandad claims was Cystic Fibrosis..... (Out of interest does anyone else have a flavelle/cystic Fibrosis link????) However from Rootsweb I have found that Betty Lou became a Weidman and has many descendants...
I will return to these relations later on in my little "essay" as it seems to be turning into......Anyhow Joe wanted to fit in with American Culture and to fit with his wealthy image he added an "e" to the surname as was common at that time....
My great Grandfather Herbert was the younger than Joe by 20 yrs.... He adored his brother and copied him by adding the "e" to our name and so it remains today 80 yrs on.....
The rest of the brood stayed in the Leicester region where they had moved to. David who went to war in 1914 with younger brother Herbert and was captured and killed in 1915 and is buried in Rouen. The girls - Sally, Louie, Minnie and Elsie lived together for many a year (all lived well into their nineties)... with Minnie living in america for a time becoming good friends with Al Capone and the Radio Producer Bill Hay....even getting engaged to him... However she returned to England in the 1930s and married a man called William Johnson. None of the other girls got married and none of them had children. Therefore all decendants of the 12 come from two of the the sons.... Joseph Fellows the eldest, and Herbert Dudley Fellows... the youngest...
(Phew! This is turning into quite an essay! Sorry Folks!)
The parents of this large group of offspring were James and Zibiah. James was a charter maker whom I know was the son of Joseph Flavell but it is confusing to say the least when finding out who his mother was... Joseph was married to a lady called Elizabeth Sheldon (the gr. gr. niece of Stephen and Edward sheldon who started up Cannons Ltd). She was a lot younger than him and bore him at least three children Joseph, Sarah and Amelia. I am not sure whether James was her child because if he was she would have given birth to him at the tender age of 13! This is not impossible of course but I cannot find any other records of marriage for Joseph suggesting a previous wife...... a mystery.....
Zibiah (second name Esther) was a Fellows... also another extremely common name in the sedgley area...... daughter of a whitesmith David and his wife also called Zibiah Rivka......a tailoress.......whose other children where called John(Yochanan), David, Elizabeth (Elisheba) and Emma......
This is where it gets intriguing.... It seems that Zibiah came from a family of Jews....I have lots of evidence to support this (wont go into detail now) but they seem well connected with the synagogue in Wolverhampton)....... As for the matter of her husband James... I am not sure of his religion...
Does anyone know about any Jewish Flavelles or Fellowes who lived in the Sedgley area....???? It seems interesting to here of a "Jews Lane" in Sedgley... does anyone know the origins of the name???? The mystery deepens when both James and Zibiah are found as having donated money to the building of one of the Wesleyan churches in sedgley.... Converts???? Hiding their religion????? Could this explain the childrens names??? I mean how many Wilhelminas do you find knocking round staffordshire in the 1880's?????? I have photos of the Flavell/fellows family taken in Europe in the 1840's - could it be that they are not real flavells/fellows' at all but took the name perhaps when they moved to sedgley?????? The mystery deepens further when my gr. grandmother herberts wife turns out to have had german jewish parents and haviung changed the family name from Gottheit to Goddard......................
Information in relation to Jews in the staffordshire are during the 1800s would be much appreciated......
So a break down of what I would like to know.....
1. Is anyone related to this lot??????
2. Were there Jews living in Sedgley during the 1800's?
3. What is the origins of "Jews Lane" in sedgley?
4. Does anyone have Flavelles (or Fellows for that matter) whom they suspect as having originated from Europe?
5. What kind of backgrounds did the Flavelles have in the Sedgley area...??/ Rich? Poor? (My family of Flavelles were upper middle class.....quite well off)
6. Does anyone know of the link with a family called "Baker" with the Flavelles??????
7.And Zibiah.... Wierd name.... anyone else encounter wierd Flavelle/fellows names?????
I of course have lots of twiddly other bits of information on the family if anyone cares to ask..... I will quite happily share what I can......
If you are still with me after that exhausing slog on my own flavelle family.... thanks for reading... I hope my info might enlighten some other poor Flavelles out there.......
And a message to whichever descendant of Betty Lou Weiman (nee Flavelle) who posted up their details on Rootsweb: If your reading this you will be delighted to know that you have distant cousins living in Britain... My grandfather still talks about when Betty Lou and Leicester who came over to visit them with their massive american car in Leicester when he was a boy... and shows us all the pictures of them, and Betty Lous two children Nancy and Peter. Betty Lou's two cousins P. and Pat have several descendants... P. having two middle aged sons and 5 grandchildren (including moi) and Pat (who has since deceased who has sevral children and grandchildren as well...) If you ever read this you can contact me and I can fill in the blanks for you about your english heritige and your supposed "Zebahiah" who is in fact Zibiah....
Lots and Love and kisses to all who read this... as I said before... hope some of this info is helpful to someone....
