Edward & Sara (Moore) Flavin, IRE>WI, 1834-1895

From “The Countryman”, Sun Prairie, WI newspaper, April 25, 1895: Edward Flavin died Sunday morning April 21st, 1895, at 6:30 o’clock, at the age of sixty-one years, from heart trouble and pneumonia. He had been sick but one week. Mr. Flavin was one of the oldest settlers in Sun Prairie. He was born in Waterford, Ireland, came to America about 35 years ago and to Sun Prairie 32 years ago. In 1865 he was united in matrimony to Miss Sara Moore, who survives him. Their marriage was blessed with three daughters – the youngest of whom died two years ago – and one son.
Funeral took place Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock from the Sacred Hearts church to the Catholic cemetery, Rev. A.J. Kuehne officiating.

From “The Countryman”, Sun Prairie, WI newspaper, Jan 26, 1933: Mrs. Sarah Flavin, 83, life-long resident of this community, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. S.M. Bey, at Fond du Lac (WI), Monday, Jan’y 23rd. Last October she gave up her home here and went to spend the winter with her daughter at Fond du Lac, because of her advanced age and failing health. The immediate cause of her death, however, was flu and pneumonia.
The remains were brought here for burial yesterday and funeral services were held at Sacred Hearts’ church at 10:00 o’clock, Rev. A.G. Haeusler officiating. Interment was in the family lot in Sacred Hearts’ cemetery.
Mrs. Flavin leaves one daughter, Mrs. Bey, 6 granddaughters and one grandson to cherish her memory.
My mother, Julia Hartshorne, born Sept 26th 1912, Nee:- Commane, now sadly passed away 1995..She used to live in County Kerry, Ireland and came to live in Britain, London 1936?. She then moved to the West Midlands. Her Mother married a man named Mr Flavin; her previous husband Mr Commane, died 1914. Mr Flavin, and Julia, the elder, had three children together, John, Patrick, and Nelly. Patrick came to live in Britain, and last lived in Warwickshire, until he died, some years ago. Nelly lived in London, then moved to Middlesex, and lived there until her death, 1998. Their mother had three other children by Mr Commane, her first husband. Julia, and Micheal, and Bridie. Mickie, as he was known locally, stayed in Ireland, until his death, some years back..? We believe Bridie, went to live in America? We could never find out what happened to John Flavin, only that he used to work for Mc Alpines, (Road Repairs) and could not seen to trace any more about him. Julia Flavin, my mother's mother, died on 17th June, 1937 or 1939? age 57yrs old of Peritonistis.

Brother to my husband's grandfather remained in Ireland. Patrick Flavin, He married Catherine Ferris. They had three children, Johanna, Seamus, and Maura. Seamus married Bridget Long at St. John's Church in Ballybunion. They had a small store and bakery in Ballyconry as late as 1993. Two of his children were killed in traffic accidents and I was told he closed the shop. 1993 was the last time I was in Ireland and I have lost touch with the family.
Audrey

The family by traditon has had a tie with the KC Flavins. We visited them and some yrs ago. and been to the Flavin House. We have been to Ballybunion several times and have done research there. The Priest permitted us to copy records direct from the Church's record books. This branch of the family also has a tie to the Delaware Co. Ohio Flavins.
For future contact please E-mail me direct.

Audrey

I saw your genealogy site as I was searching for Kathy Flavin in New York. I am searching for a female named Kathy Flavin (I am not sure if Kathy is with a K or a C). She would have dated my father in Syracuse in approximately 1958 (she would have been about 18 at the time & my father 19 or 20.) My father was 6’4, blonde hair, and blue eyes and left for Texas to join the marines. My father is Jon Fenton who was born in 1939. Recently I have discovered that Kathy became pregnant by my father with a precious baby girl. I am attempting to find my half sister as she was given for adoption. The only information I have about Kathy Flavin is her maiden name and the fact she was in Syracuse when she and my father were together. To my knowledge my half sister would be approximately 48 years old at this time as she would have possibly been born between 1958 & 1960. I greatly appreciate any assistance you can provide and may god bless you.

Respectfully,
J.C Fenton-Sims
NSC - Allstate Technology Support Center
ATSC Project Manager - PMP, CHDM, CHDP & ITIL Certified
"Technology Support...the ultimate Help Desk Solution"
Work: 972-915-5908
Cell: 214-578-3256
Their son, Edmond Flahaven AKA Edward Flavin gave his home as Asdee when he immigrated to Syacuse NY in 1900. I assume the church they attended in Ireland was not in Ballybunion.

the original name was Flahavan. It is written in the church records at Ballybunion. The Flavin's originally came from Doon. Patrick Flahavan married Joanna Houlihan. The Houlihan's came from Ballyconry and Patrick and Joanna lived in Ballyconry. I have transcribed marriage records from the church at Ballybunion and I looked for Edmond And Ellen Enright but I do not have that marriage listed.
Audrey

Are the Flavins in St. Louis and Kansas City also related to the Flavins in Syracuse, New York? They also came from Co. Kerry, near Ballybunion. My grandfather, Edward Flavin, was born June 23, 1880 in the townland of Letter and came to Syracuse in 1900 to join his brothers Matthew and John. The manifest said he was from Asdee. Their parents, Edward and Ellen Enright Flavin came from Kilcumin to Syracuse in 1901 with their daughter, Nora. There were also Flavin cousins who emigrated to Syracuse around that time.
My grandfather's birth cert from the Southern Health Board gave his name as Edmond Flahaven son of Edmond Flahaven and Ellen Enright. I do not have any church certs.

Sorry, Audrey, wrong city. The Ed and Mary Flavin I was referring to were from County Kerry and opened a store in Kansas City, MO It is one of the oldest Irish business in the country. It is run by 4th generation descendant Kerry Browne, her husband, John McClain, and her mother, Margie Bowne. My gr-grandparents were Ed and Ellen Enright Flavin from County Kerry.

I just realized that while posting my info on boards etc. that I hadn't actually put the important info on this one so that anyone might help. So, here goes...
1861 Census Dorchester parish, NB.
Flaven,
James 45 N.S. ; Sarah 40 N.S. ; Henry 10 ; John 8 ; Elizabeth 6 ; and Sarah Jane 4.

1871 census Dorchester parish, N.B.
Flavan,
James 45 N.S. Cath. Irish, labourer ; Sarah 40 N.S ; Harry 20 N.S. labourer ; John 17 N.S. shoemaker ; Sarah I/J 13 N.B. ; Isabella 9 N.B. ; Edward 5 N.B. ; James W. 3 N.B.
Beyond this info, most of what I know is that g.grandma Isabelle(a) married George Rufus Taft 2 Oct. 1889 Keene,N.H.
Her 1935 death certificate says she had been in the US for 61 years if of foreign birth...that would mean she would have arrived in the US ca. 1874 which would put her at abt. 9 years old then.
I have no other record of her or her parents before they arrived in US.
She and George are later found in MA.

I am looking for the birth records of WILLIAM FLAVIN born in Ireland about 1888. At some point he came to South Africa where he married and had a daughter who he named MARY ANN(E) FLAVIN. I do not know which county he was born in. If anyone can help please contact me.
