Hi Tracy

Many thanks for your message. I am descended from Burton Aves and Mary Ann Flaxman through their son Richard who became quite a famous shepherd so I am led to believe, He worked for Henry Dudding at Riby and was instrumental I think in the breeding of the Lincolnshire Longwool sheep (have you seen Mary Steeles book on the Lincolnshire longwool?)Have you been in touch with another branch of the family? I ask because the info I obtained regarding Richard and Ellens golden wedding came to me via a branch descended from Richards sister Theodora.

Anyway back to Burton and Mary Ann the only info I have about their parentage is the following Burtons parents I have as John Aves (Avis) and Sarah Burton (wonder if this is where the Burton Christian name originated?) and Mary Ann I have as her mother Lucy and from information I received via norfolk record office a claim made against a william ??Goat pertaining top an illegetimate child

I would love to hear from you again to exchange notes

Best wishes
Carol

Hello Carol,

I have been researching the Aves, as well. I too, have no further information on Mary Ann Flaxman. I am a descendent of Burton Aves (b. 1808) son, Benjamin Aves. Relatives of mine have come accross some articles on Richard Aves (b. 1840). Two short ones pertaining to his occupation as a Shepherd and one about his Golden Wedding anniversary.

Sincerely,

Tracy
Hello there, Mary Alice Flaxman was the sister of my g.grandad Charles Joseph Flaxman. On the 1861 census they were mistranscribed as Flatman at 61? Ann street Brighton. In 1871 she was living with her husband Charles Hewish (a Tailor), at 37 Claremount St Brighton. Have you gone back to her grandparents. Her grandad was James Flexman but I don`t know where he was born,he was on Joseph Pitchers` marriage cert as a gardener.

Carol, I suppose the easiest way for you to see the results of my research on the Aves is to guide you to the tree I published on RootsWeb:

http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jonesea...

That page is Burton's, and you can follow from there to see what the census and BMD records revealed.

Like you, I have been unsuccessful in getting beyond John Aves and Sarah Burton. And I have absolutely nothing on the Flaxmans.

My email address is on that page if you would like to contact me directly.

Regards,
Steve

Hi there

I am so sorry I havent been in touch since your posting but a lot has happened in the past few years which halted my research,
yes I would be interested in your family tree ie maria flaxmans descendants, I am actually descended from her brother richard aves.
I am still struggling to find any parentage for mary ann flaxman other than a name for her mother (lucy) i did find out some other information for a court session which listed a lucy flaxman citing a william goat for a claim which i suppose indicates i will not manage to get any further information on that side of the family.
did you have any information on the aves side? i have managed to get as far as john aves and sarah burton but no further.

I look forward to hearing from you again that is of course if you have the time and are still researching

best wishes
carol

Hi Virginia and many thanks for your message.
My Flaxman ancestors are very limited and consist of Mary Ann Flaxman born Lynn Norfolk 1813. She was the daughter of Lucy Flaxman (as far as I can locate) and I think Wm Goat and thats as far as I can go, I really have hit a proverbial brick wall!!!.
Anyway its looks like our branches do not seem to be connected but happy searching
Best wishes, Carol

Finding Flaxman's: my grandfather is Joseph

Joseph E. Flaxman: born 7/5/1898 in Petrograd (now St. Petersberg) Russia; died in Studio City, California on 9/14/1985. He is Jewish. Was married to Estelle Myrtle Zelda Flaxman (nee Berger). She was born in Chicago, Illinois and that is where they met and married, I believe. He was an electrician at Cane Welding Supply Co. in Los Angeles at the time my father was born in 1924. Estelle and Joseph had at least 4 boys: Harold Raymond (Ray), Lawrence (Larry) Erwin, and Charles, in order of oldest to youngest. Joseph and family lived in and around the Los Angeles area while the boys were young, then divorced Estelle before I was old enough to know him. I never knew Estelle either. He returned just months before he died. I hope this helps others, but I would like to know if anyone is related to me as well- I do not know if I have any living relatives. Thanks.

Carol,

I don't have any information on the Flaxman side of the family, but have some information on her descendants. I'm descended through their first child, Maria F. [Flaxman?] Aves, b. abt 1837 in Santon Downham, Suffolk. Since you've seen the census records, I assume you have her 7 children.

I found Mary Anne's death registration in an index:

Name: Aves, Mary Ann
Record Type: Deaths
Age at death: 64
Quarter: June
Year: 1877
District: Downham
County: Cambridgeshire Norfolk
Volume: 4b
Page: 250

And that's about I can tell you about her. I haven't sent for the full record. If you're interested in Maria's descendants, contact me, and I'll fill you in.

Flaxman in Australia

I have started researching my family history and hope there is someone out there who may be able to provide some help. I am seeking the ancestry of the Flaxman family, who arrived in Sydney (Marrickville) around 1870-1880. Specifically, I am interested in William and Mary Ann Flaxman (no maiden name for Mary Ann) who apparently had six children - James W, Albert Jesse, Frederick Percy (1886), Herbert G (1888), Leonard S (b and d 1891) and Ernest V (1893). (Mary Ann apparently died in 1896) Frederick Percy later went to Bristol in the UK and married Clara Anne Stokes late 1918. Amongst their children was Frederick John Lionel Flaxman, b 1 April 1919 in Bristol. The moved back to Australia sometime after this, possibly around 1920. FJL Flaxman was my grandfather.

If there is anyone who may have information on this family I would appreciate hearing from you - e-mail flaxy@optusnet.com.au.

Thank you

Dave Flaxman
My computer crashed on Sunday and I just got
it back. Found your message. The Flaxmans I am researching intermarried with Niermans who
also came from Lithuania and lived in Chicago. I just hope all these floppy disks
really have my backups. I really don't have much on the Flaxmans-just names and some dates.
