Hello jahaki,

I saw on Ancestry.com that you are seekin info for a Clara Loise Hauser born 13 Feb 1894 from Jersey City. I suspect that she may be Julia Hauser's (my grandmother) sister, but not certain. I say this because there was a Louise Hauser listed on the 1910 cencus, and I assumed she may have gone by her middle name (Clara). Can you confirm this?

Thanks,

David Stroebel

I believe this is Archie's wife, Esther Hittmann's, family in 1910:
April 29, 1910 census of the town of Oak Creek, South Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin.
Living at 305 Marshall Avenue
Henry Hittman, age 39, in his first marriage for 15 years, he and parents born in Wisconsin, mason for a contractor
Lena, wife, age 40, born in Wisconsin, parents born in Germany, in her first marriage for 15 years, had 5 children, 3 still living
Henry, son, age 12, born in Wisconsin
Ester, daughter, age 15, born in Wisconsin

I haven't found them in 1900 yet, but they were probably in Milwaukee.

The 1890 census was destroyed, so there is no record of where the Hittmann's lived in 1890.

This may be Esther Hittman's father, Henry, in his parents' home in 1880:
June 19, 1880 census of Milwaukee Wisconsin
Living at 547 Centre Street
Henry Hittmann, age 39, born at sea, parents born in Bavaria, works in a lumber yard
Mary, age 28, born in Wisconsin, parents born in Bavaria
Henry, son, age 10, born in Wisconsin
John, son, age 8, born in Wisconsin
Willis, son, age 6, born in Wisconsin
Charles, son, age 3, born in Wisconsin
Theresa, daughter, age 1, born in Wisconsin

This will take a while, but I'll let you know as soon as I find anything that looks good. With respect to the WWII draft registration, the United Staets had what they called an "old man's draft registration" in 1942 for men who would normally be too old for service. I think they were looking for men born between 1874 and 1889. That's why your relatives registered. Right off the bat, it looks like your Anna O'Shea could be Hannah O'Shea who immigrated through Ellis Island in 1909 as a servant. She may have been travelling with a bookkeeper named David O'Keefe. She was 17 and single when she arrived aboard the SS Baltic out of Queenstown on October 3, 1909. She reported she was from Newcastle West, County Limerick, Ireland. Her father was David O'Shea of Newcastle West. Mr. O'Keefe was from the same place. He was headed for Chicago and she was headed for New York City. The reason I think she is a good bet is that your Anna was born about the same time and married in 1910, so that narrows the time she immigrated down to the 1892-1910 window. There was no Anna or Josephine O'Shea who immigrated during this time frame. There was one other Hannah O'Shea, born about 1892 in Dingle, Ireland who immigrated in October 1910 aboard the SS Adriatic out of Queenstown. She had a cousin in New York City living at 2853 8th Avenue. Her father was James O'Shea who lived in Ballymor?, County Dingle, Ireland. I suppose she is a good bet, too. Another point that may be of use: Harry is a common nickname for the given name Henry, so Henry/Harry Regan could be one and the same person. The informant on the death certificate may not have known the name for sure. I'll let you know if I find more.

That's great news. I tried to find her family in Canada, but don't have access to the Canadian census. I did a search on "lea* laurencelle" and did get a single hit in the 1901 census. Since Phillip was a widower, it's not her, but might be a relative.
I'd be happy to take the challenge if you have some information about your father's relative.

I checked the 1920 census and Morris O'Dell's wife was named Mary. She was born about 1891 in New York. They had two children: Phillip, age 8, and Grace, age 2. They lived at 159 Norman Avenue in Brooklyn. Checking the 1910 census it appears that Morris was the son of James L. and Alice A. O'Dell who had been married for 44 years and lived at 99 22nd Street in Queens. In 1910 a Mary Fleckenstein, born about 1890, was enumerated in the housewhold of her father, Phillip. They lived at 103 Summit Avenue in Queens. Given the fact that Mary's father was named Phillip and Morris O'Dell and his wife, wife, Mary had a son named Phillip, it looks likely that this is the right Mary Fleckenstein. In 1900 Mary Fleckenstein and he widowed father, Phillip, were living in the household of Phillip's widowed mother, Abalon Fleckenstein, born December 1832 in Germany. Phillip was born August 1861 in New York and Mary was born July 1890 in New York. Abalon Fleckenstein immigrated to the United States in 1856.

I really don't know much about the Fleckenstein family. i originally posted the fact that as a boy I used to hunt in the woods of central Georgia and found an old abandoned farm with a very small family cemetery dating to the 1870s that had the name Fleckenstein on two tombstones with several small unmarked graves that I took to be children. Since I'm addicted to genealogy, I usually try to answer any questions that get posted in response. I'd be happy to try to track down your ancestor if you have additional information you can provide.

Well, the same family was enuemrated in 1930 in Bellmore, Hempstead, Nassau County, New York as follows:
Living at 406 Berigan Street
Maurice Odell, age 40, owns a home valued at $7,000, first married at age 19, he and parents born in NY, works as a train clerk for an electric railway
Mary, age 39, first married at age 19, she and father born in New York, mother born in French Canada
Margaret, daughter, age 15
Grace, daughter, age 11
William, son, age 7
Catherine, daughter, age 6
Gertrude, daughter, age 1 year 3 months (born in January 1929).
It appears that Phillip may have married and moved out of the household. Perhaps William had the middle name Henry or Harry. I can't figure out what happened to Leah May, so I'll keep looking.

A Morris Odell, born in Westchester County New York on May 17, 1889 filled out a WWI draft registration form in Queens on June 5, 1917. At the time he was living at 147 13th Avenue, Long Island City, New York and he was working as a conductor on the NY and LI Railway. He had a wife and 4 children. Does this look like the right person?
Wow! Most of what you found does make sense, the only problem I can;t figure is that my grandmother Leah May Odell was born in 1911 to Moris Odell and Mary Fleckenstein and you did not have her listed on the 1920 census. But this must be them, all the dates and names seem to be correct. My grandmother Leah also may have had a brother named Harry or Henry and she had a twin that died at birth. DO you have any suggestions to find more info on her to connect her to this Moris Odell and Mary Fleckenstein? Thank you so much you have been very helpful and it is greatly appreciated! This side of the family has been very difficult to track down.

found Lea Odell!!! I found her, I found a 1920 census that has a lea odell age 8 yrs living with a cousins named Joseph and Katherine Heiselmann, I was able to confirm that it is her because I have a copy of Lea's marriage certificate and on it one of the witnesess was Katherine Heiselmann!!! This explains that she was not living in the Odell Household!! I never would have followed this lead of her not living at hime if it wasn;t for you, thank you so much.. Are you up for another challenge? I have someone I am trying to find on my fathers side who has been quite difficult to locate becasue he was dropped off at an orphange and he seems to have used 2 different names...

This is all the info I have on Leah May Odell... Her birth Certificate has her name spelled Lea May Odell born May 17, 1911 in NY to Mary Odell (Fleckenstein) and Moris Odell. Her Death Certificate has her name as Leah, she was married to Frank Godlewski in 1936 in NY and died June 11, 1969. For some reason she also wrote her name as Mary L. Odell on her Marriage Certificate. Her mother, Mary Fleckenstein's parents were Philip Fleckenstein born in NY and Leh Laurencelle born in Canada. I have not been able to find anything about the Canadian connection yet. I know Leah had brothers and sisters, but we don't know anymore than the name Harry or Henry. Everything yiu have found seems to be correct, but I just don;t get what happened to Leah? Perhaps she was sent away to live with relatives? Thank you for any info, you have been extremely helpful

Here's the challenge: My g-grandfather is Harry P. (assumed to be Paul) Regan. Harry married Anna Josephine O'Shea...this is her name according to her first son's (my grandfather's) birth cert. However, family knew her as Johanna and Hannah...from Ireland. Harry had siblings, but we have no info. We found ss death index, censuses of them married with their children, his ww1 and ww2 draft cards, but can't take him backwards. His father is supposed to be James Regan from County Cork Ireland. The family says that James's wife died young, he abandoned the children, remarried, possibly to someone who was much younger and who may have already had her own children. He spent his life devoted to the second family. He may have lived in CT and Harry may have been born there. We ordered a NYC Birth Cert for Harry Regan (most of our family is from there), born 2/22/1891. The cert came back with the correct birth date, but it was "Henry" Regan, with a father "George". He had a son named George and one named Harry, and a grandson named Henry, so we're not sure if the names we know could have been middle names that they went by or if these are the wrong people. I did find via ss death index that in Harry's last year 1968, he lived with his daughter Florence in Levittown LI NY (which my father confirmed) and there is a Thomas Joseph Regan who is listed as a neighbor. Coincidentally, Thomas also filled out ww1 and 2 draft reg cards. We found this odd with Harry because of his age of 50 during the 2nd ww draft. Thomas was 51 and also filled out the card. I also have a 1900 census showing a James Regan born in 1872 living alone in North Hempstead, Nassau Cty, LI NY. My father says Harry used to talk about how he ran away from a "boy's home" and worked a lot to make it. He also recalls him saying how he was resentful that all of his father's money went to his new family. That's everything we've got. I know who all of Harry and Anna's children are and their children are my father, his sibs and cousins. I also then need to trace Harry's wife back to Ireland...I have (some?)her sibs names and that's about it. Let us know if you find anything. We can't thank you enough for all of your help :)

FYI Johanna O'shea had sisters: Catherine (sp?) aka Kitty, aka Katey, Margaret and Abigail, aka Abby (who was very bizarre and is said to have had about 7 husbands, all of whom died very suddenly) and also a brother Jack. They all came over here. I have heard that Johanna came over with her sister Catherine and I have heard that she came over with her mother (no name known). Who knows...maybe it was the O'Keefe gentleman :) Keep me posted...and again, thank you very much!

Her father is Johann Sebastian Fleckenstein and her mother is Maria Elisabeth Kunkel, both are born and burried in Habichsthal.
Barbara had a child Agnes (later: Fuchs), born 14 oct 1826. She married Johann Fuchs from Sommerkahl on 26 April 1831. They had a child Walburga Fuchs born 7 nov 1831.
Barbara emigrated to Amerika, but I have no more information about Johann Fuchs and the children.
Schmitt, Weber and Emmel (Immel) are common names in our region!
Coming in a little late on this thread, but we grew up with an antique photo of the "castle" on the wall. My mother's mother was Katherine Fleckenstein of Jersey City, NJ (married Louis Lenk) ... she had 13 siblings, one of whom died as a young child. A few of the siblings are George, Rose, Emma, Helen, May and Gussie. I have more info if anyone is interested.

Which part of the Fleckenstein family are you kin to? The Bauer name rings a bell, but I could be mistaken. I've lost touch with the only cousins in NJ that I knew as a child in the 50s and 60s. I'm sure there are some cousins out there from great uncles I never knew. There were a few that disappeared early on. I knew all my tantes. I have a couple old family photos of my grandmother's family as children and we can't identify a few of her brothers.

Herman Bernard & Patricia Bornhorst, your parents. Herman b. 2-23-1922-d 1-27-03, Brisbane, Australia. His note to me? Have to think and hunt that one. Did I mention that I have a daughter living in his sister Volunta and Paul Buehler's home in Botkins? And that a daughter of Mary Agnes Elenora Bornhorst of 1-21-1936 - 3-21-1988(Albany,Ga. has been the main researcher of this Fleckenstein family? Those notes is where I probably have the note to which you refer. But think I meant a note from Barney to his niece in Oregon. Will do some checking. meantime contact me on bar5@bright.net as I will not give her name out without her permission. Too I will contact this niece and advise her that you seek this info on your father.
By the way I do not have your mother's maiden name.
And since Barny's mother was Augusta Agnes Fleckenstein and Herman Anthony Bornhorst, we are cousins.Did George Augustin Bornhorst of 2-22-1922 ever marry and have a family?I attended his home sale at 13 Herman St. Fort Loramie, Ohio, folowing his passing. I talked with several of the Fleckenstein family. Was Barney in this area at that time.Somebody at that sale setting in a wheel chair comes to mind. Too am putting together some data for the Herbert Fleckenstein on Barhorst road, a couple miles north of here and will be talking with him soon. Perhaps that will help my memory.
John George Fleckenstein born in Vicksburg, Mississippi Feb 10, 1845, son of Conrad and 1st Elizabeth or 2nd Clara. This Conrad may have been a son of a Frances. John George moved to (Berlin)Fort Loramie, Shelby County, ohio, and the first child born in Ohio was a Clara on Apr 3 1876. Anyhows his 1st wife must have died with the 1st child. The 2nd wife was Theresia "Tracy" Bauer, d/o my g-g-grandparents: George Bauer and Maria Angelica Schmackers, both of Germany. Have extensive data on Theresia's 7 siblings and their children,....ie Gaier/Geier, Eilerman, Kloecker, Deiters, Pining, Weller, Mergenthal, Pohlschneider.
