Hi Rhonda. I believe that you have incorrect information. My relative, Mary Fleece McFann, is not the same person as Mary Withers Fleece. The records that I have on Mary Withers and John Fleece indicates John Fleece was born 1758, making Mary Withers Fleece . His brother was Jacob Fleece, Mary Fleece McFann's father. Their father was Nicholas Fleece.

Here's the family basics:

Jacob Fleece and Rebecca Smith had the following children:
Mary Fleece, John William Fleece, Sarah Fleece, Enoch Fleece, and Elizabeth Fleece.

Jacob Fleece had a brother, John Fleece. Their parents were Nicholas Fleece and Magdalena Weisinger.

I have obtained both deeds and estate records (from 1792) showing that my Mary Fleece was the daughter of Jacob Fleece and Rebecca Smith Fleece.

There are Rev. records for both Jacob and John Fleece. John Fleece was a Corporal and there are military certificates proving this. I believe that John Fleece (enlisted in 4th Virginia Regiment, Continental Line at Winchester in 1775) may have been born in Germany. Perhaps Jacob, as well. John Fleece migrated into Kentucky and shows up in the Second Census of KY, 1800.

There are numerous records on John Fleece indicating that he died in 1837, a widower to spouse, Pamela Pope. Given his age and the records, I would guess that Pamela Pope was his 2nd wife. Upon his death, his will lists a number of children under age who were appointed to Green Fleece as guardian.

More: Original patents for land assigned to Nicholas Fleece and William Smith (then to Jacob Fleece, as Jacob married William Smith's daughter Rachael) places them in the Berkeley [W] Virginia area. Tax lists dating 1782 and 1783 lists both Nicholas and Jacob Flees [sic]. Deeds from 1795 listing family relationships are also recorded. These can be found at the Berkeley County Historical Society.

There is a second Nicholas who may be the brother to Jacob and John Fleece but I have yet to prove this, although there are records indicating a second Nicholas Fleece. Also, the will of John Fleece of Washington Co., KY lists yet another Nicholas Fleece (son).

There is a vertical file on the Fleece family at Berkeley County and you can request copies of a number of documents that may help you piece your family line together.
