Dear Nick,

I contacted you in 2003 re the above but wondered if now you may be able to help as you may have more information. We have always been told that my husband Len is related to Frederick Fleet, would you be able to help with this ?

His grandfather is Walter James Fleet born 7 Sept 1904 and died January 1991 and who lived in Torquay and Plymouth, whose son is Terence John Fleet born 4/3/1941 in Plymouth, my husband Len is his son.

There is another post on here saying Frederick Fleet married an Annie Clarke, whereas I thought he married Eva Le Gros, can you shed any light on this?

Could you e-mail me back if you need any more information?

Many thanks for your help.

Paula Fleet

Hi,

I'm only interested in anybody whose descended from the children of Hugh and Ann Fleet of Manchester, England.

We are an English family, no Van Fleets please.

It seems to be 10 years since my origional post.
In 1999 when I made my origional post I was just starting our on my journey into family history.

My journey has now taken me down further avenues, and I admit that some of my origional information was wrong, it is now correct as far as I am aware, and I am now writing this to correct my earlier posting.

My g grand parents were Hugh and Ann Fleet who had 12 children, my grand father being their son George who married Annie Elizabeth Potter.

I would be interested in hearing from serious family historians, descended from Hugh and Ann who resided in Manchester, England in the latter part of the 19th century, and who both died in the early 20th century.
No time wasters please.

Frederick Fleet - Lookout on Titanic

I have just read all of the treats regarding Frederick Fleet. I can supply you with a lot of information as my family are related to him.

Frederick Fleet married Annie Clarke (born October 1896) and had a son called Alfred Fleet who was born on 28 May 1919. Alfred Fleet married Vera Davey, and had 2 children, one of whom is my Uncle by marriage. His name is Paul Fleet born 01/03/1948.

Paul Fleet knows much information about Frederick Fleet, and all the mystery that surrounds (even to the point that he may have been a bigamist, i.e more than one wife!)

A lot of what I have read on the internet is mis-informed, even to the point of who paid for his Gravestone (it was the White Star Line who paid). The White Star Line also bought Frederick Fleet a Public House in Southampton.

James Fleet, the actor, who appears in the Vicar of Dibley series, is Paul Fleets cousin.

If anyone feels that they are related to Frederick Fleet in any way, please contact me, and I will forward your details onto Paul Fleet to enable him to respond to you.

Carole Brown

Re: Robert Bennett FLEET (1874-1965) VA.> CA

Charles Brown and his wife Priscilla Brooke of MD had Bennett Browne (who migrated to Essex Co., VA and married Mary Hill, a daughter of Leonard Hill, in 1775). Bennett and Mary (Hill) Browne's daughter Sarah Browne married William Christopher Fleet (he had previously been married to a Miss Tomlin, apparently), and some "Fleet descendants" of this couple had "Bennett" and/or "Brown/Browne" as a given first or middle name. Bennett Browne (died around the late-1780s in Essex Co., VA and left a will) received his given name because Pricilla Brooke's grandaunt (a Miss Neale) married Richard Bennett, Jr., who was a son of Colonial Governor Richard Bennett, Sr. of Virginia.

It appears that a sister of William Christopher Fleet named Ann Nancy Fleet married Christopher Tompkins. Their apparent daughter Ann Fleet Tompkins married Charles Browne, and Charles (born 1777) was apparently the known son with that given name of Bennett and Mary (Hill) Browne. This Charles Browne fathered a son named Christopher Tompkins Browne/Brown, and Christopher married a Juliet Garnett. One of Christopher's children was named Ann Temple Nannie Brown. The name "Temple" apparently came from the Ann Temple who was one of the two wives of William Fleet, Jr., who was a son of William Fleet, Sr, and his wife Sarah Ann Jones. The other wife of William Fleet, Jr. was Susannah Walker.

Comments/questions?

Re: FLEET, England>VA

Per another researcher, William Christopher Fleet, a son of William Fleet, Junior and either his first wife Ann Temple or his second wife Susannah Walker (which mother is correct for William Christopher Fleet?), had a sister named Ann Nancy Fleet (not to be confused with the other sister named Mary Ann Fleet who married a Mr. Pendleton, as I recall). Ann Nancy Fleet married Christopher Tompkins/Tomkins (born about 1739), and their daughter (almost certainly), Ann(e) Fleet Tompkins, married Charles Browne (born 1777). Charles Browne was almost certainly the known son with that name of Bennett and Mary (Hill) Browne (who married in 1775; Mary Hill was a daughter of a Leonard Hill), and hence, this Charles Browne was almost certainly a brother of the Sarah Browne (a KNOWN daughter of Bennett and Mary (Hill) Browne) who was the second wife of William Christopher Fleet.

Charles and Ann(e) Fleet (Tompkins) Browne had a son who was named Christopher Tompkins Browne (shown on censuses as "Brown"....Christopher married a Miss Garnett). One of Christopher T. Brown's daughters was named Ann Temple Nannie Brown(e)....so that "Temple" middle name seems to "solidify" that Christopher T. Browne was very likely a descendant on Mrs. Ann (Temple) Fleet, as shown herein. Christopher Tompkins Brown was on the 1830 census in Essex Co., VA and then on the 1840 census in "next-door" Middlesex Co., VA. The parents of Bennett Browne were the wealthy Charles and Priscilla (Brooke) Browne of MD.

There was a male in Christopher T. Brown's home in Middlesex Co., VA in 1840, per the census, who was in the correct age range to have been my maternal gg-grandfather, Smith W. Brown (and Christopher was the ONLY Brown shown by name on that entire 1840 Middlesex census). DNA testing on living male descendants has shown, however, that Smith W. Brown (born about 1817) was actually a "blood Smith" versus a "blood Brown." I believe that Smith W. Brown was a "Smith infant/toddler" who was taken-in and renamed by John and Mary (Bennett) Brown, who married in Middlesex Co., VA in 1805 (this John Brown was on the 1810 and 1820 Middlesex censuses...and he died before 1830). I have some clues as to whose "biological child" Smith W. "Brown" probably was....but my research continues on that. I have yet to determine, however, how/if the John Brown who married Mary Bennett in Middlesex in 1805 was related to the referenced Charles and Bennett Browne family. If John Brown truly was, in fact, a member of that overall Browne/Brown family, it is possible, I guess, that he was out of one of the three BROTHERS of Bennett Browne....but I have done little research on that possibility at this point in time (none of the brothers seemed to come to VA from MD, but a SON of one of those brothers certainly could have).

Note: Bennett Browne was named for the husband of one of his great-aunts. That aunt (a Miss Neale) married Richard Bennett, Junior, and this "Richard Junior" was a son of Richard Bennett, Senior, who was an early Colonial Governor of VA. It is not clear how/if the above Mary Bennett who married John Brown was related to the overall family of Governor Richard Bennett. Mary Bennett was a daughter of Mrs. Winnie/Winifred Bennett....but Winnie's "Bennett husband" is not known (her husband was dead by at least 1798, when Winnie married second to a James Owen in Middlesex Co., VA).

The DNA of the "Smith W. Brown family" matches the DNA from the family of the Alexander Smith who died in Essex Co., VA in 1696. Alexander Smith had a neighbor who was named John Smith (who died earlier in Middlesex in 1669). Some researchers have long-suspected that Alexander and John Smith were brothers....but we currently have no male Smith DNA donor out of this John Smith for comparison to Alexander's family. This early John Smith had at least two descendants who married into the Walker family (including a later/younger John Smith), but I have not yet determined how/if those Walkers were related to the Susannah Walker who was one of the two wives of William Fleet, Junior.

Comments or questions on any of the above? Thanks.

Hi, I am from the Fleet family of Liverpool, could origibally be from Sussex way- haven't got that far with my search yet- just starting our Fleet family tree. My grandfather was Alfred Fleet who married May Walsh-May wa sborn in Wexford,Ireland. Alfred and May married in Liverpool in 1929- Alfred's father was William Henry Fleet, a baker. Alfred was a cabinet maker- he also spent time in the Forces, RAF I think. There is a possibility that we are related to Frederick Fleet, one of the lookouts on the Titanic. Obvioulsy I am wanting to trace back beyond William Henry Fleet , if anyone can help me please email me at julste@xtra.co.nz - this is a shared email address with my husband.
Did you have any FLEET family in Virginia in the mid-to late 1600s?

I am aware of an early Virginia record which links the "widow FLEET" and a Jno. COOPER and his wife as grantors in a 1675 Gloucester County deed. This record strongly suggests a family relationship of some kind between FLEET and COOPER surnames. This conclusion is further buttressed by several other extant York County, VA, records revealing connections between a widow, Anne FLEETE, and John COOPER, "attorney of Anne." These documents were recorded between 1665 and 1672.

Our earliest documented ancestor was FLEET COOPER, Sr.

Best regards,
Gary
Hi, I was told by my father- Terry Fleet (RIP) that Frederick Fleet , the look out on the Titanic is a distant relatie of ours. Our Fleet family hail from Liverpool,England where Fred was born- I am in the process of doing a Fleet family tree and hope that this will shed some light on the subject. My dad is dead now as are his parents- so I don't really have anyone left to ask.
Julie Gregory (nee Fleet)

Hi Jacquie, I am a Fleet decendant in Adelaide too! My line starts with Frederick Fleet born in Surrey, London and married Eliz Camp in England. His father was Robert Fleet and mother was Ann Elizabeth Kitton. Frederick and Eliz came to Adelaide in 1849. They settled in the Adelaide Hills and there are hundreds of us around. They had 11 children that I know of.

I do know that Frederick had a had at least 3 brothers called Robert 2 of which I presume died young. He also had a brother William George.

If there is a connection, or if you need further information, please contact me.

Bev.

Also heard their farm was near waterfalls on what is now liscomb Lodge. Have you any knowledge of this? Joe

I have 7 siblings, birth dates for most, death dates for a few, some spouses, no marriage dates except for Isadore. Anything you can fill in would be most helpful. Also, do you have anything earlier than her parents? I only have year of birth for both parents and no marriage date. Do you know of any newspaper online that might have info on the fire? I am full of questions, so please contact me directly at formerfarmer@comcast.net and I will fill you in on anything you might want to know about Annie Loretta and Georgina Fleet.

I have several in my reports online on Bagby.org

http://www.bagby.org

There is a search engine on the site tools page to search for others, but one instance is on the following page of Bagby.org

http://www.bagby.org/r01g06p06.html

The surnames you mentioned in your post are all connected to King & Queen County along with the Bagby surname. It would be my guess that your lineage goes back to King & Queen at some point in time.

Sherri Schaefer Bagby
Fleet Admin
http://www.bagby.org

Daniel Fleet was one of 5 children born to William and Judith Fleet in North Crawley, Buckinghamshire. They were Edward (1794), Edward (1796 - 1878), Daniel (1802 - 1884), Mary (1806) and William (1814 - 1881).

Daniel married Ann Blaby (1806 -1888) on 8 June 1829 in Husborne Crawley. They had 7 children Elizabeth (1830), Daniel (1834), George (1836), John (1839), William (1840), Ann (1842) and James (1845).

William (1814-1881) was my 3x great grandfather. He married Ann Cook (1818-1903) on 14 November 1837 in Husborne Crawley. They had 11 children.

Crow Lane was (and still is) a row of cottages built in 1853 by the Duke of Bedford for his workers on the Woburn estate. I went and took some pictures of them a few years ago. It is a solitary lane away from the main drag of Husborne Crawley. There are a few grave stones for Fleets in the church graveyard.

Kim
Carole, you're absolutely right about Nannie Ryland being Joanne Bagby Ryland. But her husband was Christopher Bennett Fleet, I believe. He was born 28 Oct 1845 and died 1 Apr 1925. She was born 14 Apr 1844 at 'Marlborough' and died 27 Dec 1926. She was the daughter of Joseph Ryland 1813-1872 and Priscilla Courtney Bagby 1818-1888.

Christopher Browne Fleet was their son.

Neither one was the C. B. Fleet who gave the world Fleet's Phospho-Soda. That was Charles Browne Fleet.

I'm seeking more detailed info on my great Grandfather, Almond W Fleet, born in Maine, USA, 1866. I am new to the research process, but have plumbed the depths here. Census listings have him as "W" for "white," however I know for a fact that he was Native American. It is possible that he was adopted. He haled from Mount Desert Island, Maine and was probably either born there, or taken there from Massachusetts. If this rings a bell with anyone, I would so appreciate your repsonse. Thanks very much!

FLEET & COOPER Family Connection? 1670s VA

The given name FLEET figures strongly in my COOPER family. I am desparate to find if there is a connection between the FLEET & COOPER Families.

I am aware of a Virginia record which links the "widow FLEET" and a Jno.

Hi Richard

Thank you for your reply. Although it's been four years since my original posting I still haven't found out anything about Robert Fleet (William's father) and I didn't know he had a brother called Robert either!

To update my original message I now know that William George Fleet was a Draper, Tailor and Hatter (not a sailor) and was born in the City of London, Middlesex (according to the 1851 census) c1816. He died on the 23/1/1853 (age 36) of chronic alcoholism.

Any information you could give me regarding William's parents and siblings would be gratefully received.
Regards
Carol

Unfortunately, mine is still on hard copy. never had the chance to put on comp. Is yours on comp? Be nice to be able to see who has what and what blanks we could fill in. Joe

Daniel Fleet in North Crawley, Buckinghamshire and Husborne Crawley, Bedfordshire

Hello. Looking for information on Daniel Fleet from North Crawley, Buckinghamshire, born about 1802. He married Ann (last name unknown) from Wilstead, Bedfordshire, and they spent their married life in Husborne Crawley, Bedfordshire. Their children were Ann, Daniel, Elizabeth, George, James and William.

The senior Daniel had a sister Mary Fleet, also born in North Crawley, Bucks, about 1806.

The junior Daniel (b. 1833) married Emma Oliver (b. 1837); they had Harry Daniel Fleet (b. 1862, Husborne Crawley) who married Agnes Woods (b. 1859). Harry and Agnes immigrated to Michigan late 1800s and had Harry Gordon, my grandfather.

If any of this rings a bell with anyone I'd appreciate the help. Thanks.

Thank you Kim! I've had "Blaby?" next to Ann in my notes, so I'm thrilled to have the confirmation. Do you have information any further back for either Fleets or Blabys? I'm also wondering if you know whether any of the other Buckingham or Bedford Fleets came to America, and in what areas they might have ended up? And at the risk of sounding greedy, do you happen to have a photo of Crow Lane on the computer that would be handy to send along via e-mail?

Thanks again --Mari
mcfleetwhite@tds.net
