The Flemings: The Scots-and the Making of America

The Scots were the backbone of the 'making of America'-from the founding fathers (and mothers), the Revolution, and the Westward Movement.
Our Flemings-descended from Col. Charles Fleming of Virginia/of Scottish descent, were certainly a part of this.
I have written a story of these remarkable people on my website:
pixleyblair.tribalpages.com
From my Home Page in the upper left click on 'People' then go to 'Stories' and to: "The Scots, Scots-Irish and the Making of America."
I also have more information on our Fleming line entered on the site.
I am looking for an Elizabeth(Betsy)Fleming or Flemmings. She is my 4th g grandmother. She married Jacob Labar. They resided in Bushkill, PA. Most of their family is buried at Sandhill Church Cemetery in Bushkill. Elizabeth lived with her daughter (Elsie Hineline, Beloof) in 1880 in Middlesmithfield Township, Monroe County, PA. There is an Edward J. Fleming at Sandhill Cem., but I can't connect them. Levi Labar is Jacob and Elizabeth's son. On his death record it states Besty Flemmings. If anyone has come across any information out of Northampton, PA, (marriage info), they could have lived early on in Wayne County, (marriage info). I would really appreciate any information on either Jacob and or Elizabeth. Thank you.
Barbara
Augustus F. Fleming marries Mattie A. Kelly September 21, 1908 Portland Oregon FYI

Fleming - Kelly
A very pretty wedding took place at St. Lawrence’s Church at high noon on Monday, When Augustus F. Fleming , a well-known young business man was married to Mattie A. Kelly, an accomplished and popular young organist, Rev. Father J.C. Hughes officiating. The elaborate decorations of the church, amid a blaze of hundreds of miniature incandescent lights, lent splendor to the occasion. The bride, dressed in white silk and lace, and carrying a bouquet of bride roses, was attended by Miss Clara Fleming, a sister of the groom, who was most becomingly attired in white and carried a bouquet of pink roses. The groom was attended by Commodore George J. Kelly, brother of the bride. After the ceremony the bridal party, accompanied by the immediate relatives, repaired to the home of the bride’s parents at 404 Fifth Street, where an elaborate wedding breakfast followed. Mr. And Mrs. Fleming left for the East, and will be at home to their friends after October 15, at 564 Fourth Street.

The Sunday Oregonian
Sept. 27, 1908
Sec III Page 3 Column 3

I am not related. Known by his family and friends variously as "Luke," "Rip," "Foster," "Dad," or "Pop-Pop," he was a private man of great integrity who loved and was loved dearly by his family and close friends. Rip was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on November 14, 1918, to Burton and Florence Fleming, both college professors. When his parents died while he was still a teenager, he moved to Glendale, California, to live with his Aunt Clara and Uncle Eldon Bacon. He attended UCLA, joining Theta Delta Chi fraternity, and studied there until his induction into the service in 1941. During World War II, he served for five years in the U.S. Army, reaching the rank of major and commanding an anti-aircraft battery that fought in the European theater, including the Battle of the Bulge. At war's end, Rip returned to L.A. to attend and graduate from UCLA. There he met and married Barbara Toney. Barbara and "Luke," as she calls him, were married for 59 years. They have four children (Debbie, Allyn, Burt, and Rip, Jr.) and two grandchildren (Hannah and Ryan). Rip and Barbara made a loving home in Whittier, California, until the year 2000, when they moved to Santa Barbara to be closer to family. Rip is preceded in death by his brother, Rear Admiral Allan Fleming, his sister, Allaire McGill, and his son Burt. Rip worked for Security Pacific National Bank in Los Angeles for 36 years, retiring as a First Vice President in 1983. From 1983 on, he served as a special consultant to the board of directors of Home Depot. Home Depot honored him with a "Founders' Award" in 1999, one of his proudest moments. After retirement, Rip spent time doing what he loved most: golfing, sailing, fishing, traveling, playing guitar, and spending time with family and friends. His family especially remembers many happy summers swimming and sailing at Alamitos Bay in Southern California, a family sailing adventure in the British Virgin Islands (his dream trip), and happy family gatherings in Whittier, Del Mar, Mammoth, Hawaii, and Santa Barbara. Rip's family would like to thank all the staff at Samarkand's Smith Center for their loving care and attention over the last seven months. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Surfrider Foundation or the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum.
Published in the Whittier Daily News on 2/28/2008.

I am seeking descedents of the Solomon & Sarah Anne (Davis Bateman) Fleming family which resided in Jefferson Co., WV during the 1800's and/or their son, Walter E. Fleming who moved west to Harrison & Wood counties and married Ida Bassel in 1887. I believe they had at least one son, Walter Bassel Fleming, and they resided in Parkersburg at the time of Walter, Sr.'s death in 1917.

Other children born to Solomon & Sarah were (based on the 1860 census): Mary Jane Fleming, Ellen D. Fleming, and Catharine A. Fleming. Mary Jane (Jennie) Fleming married Archibald McCarroll in 1861 in Jefferson Co., WV.

Any information on the line (including Solomon's parents), would be appreciated.
Seeking help with Fleming BDMs in England, Wales and Scotland

Hi,

Letting you know I've just uploaded a further 200 spouses to the Enland/Wales marriage index so it now has over 4,000 spouses and it's passsed the halfway mark! - but now I need your help.

Please continue building this unique resource. It reduces the guesswork for everyone ordering Fleming certificates(and all the variants including Flemington). Just note the details from any birth, death, marriage certificate or parish register entry 1837 - 1911 you have in an email to me. Your privacy and research endeavor is always respected. Your transcripts wont ever be published by me or sold etc but individual transcripts will be shared with a likely connection unless you request otherwise.

Until more records are available online, I believe I have reached a slowing point with this index without spending a loads of money or retiring to get at parish registers!! so I'm hoping we'll get more than a few certicate or parish register transcripts to reduce the remaining total.

Courtesy of the SRO, the Scotland marriage index comes with the spouse already identified, but as the England marriages is slowing, I'm hoping you'll have some England & scotland births to keep filling the gaps in these indexes as well.

Meanwhile explore the indexes! http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~fleming/transcripts.htm

Many thanks
Ruth Rathbone
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~fleming/

Eight of the dead have been recovered. Five men were seriously hurt. Several bodies are yet pinned under the wrecked barge. The part of the bridge extending out over the river from the Water Street side is a total wreck. The casualties follow:

William C. Fleming, George Wells, James McLoud, Frederick Stallinger, J. Campbell, William Kitlinger, Frank Dalby; the missing are Edward Morris and Phillip Morris.

Deputy Corner L. C.Huckle made an investigation at the scene of the disaster. He believes the blame rests on whoever was in charge of the hoisting and fastening of the I beam. He says that a failure to properly secure one derrick load caused the breaking strain to fall on the crane.

The accident was caused by the giving way of a two-inch steel cable which was used as one of the guys to support the big crane. This cable was tested to bear a strain of 100 tons, and it is said that it did no break but pulled loose from its fastenings.

There were thirty-four men at work on the superstructure of the bridge and in the barge below, from which the beams were being hoisted by the crane, 1,775 feet above the river lever, when the booms collapsed. Of the men who were in the barge, some escaped with their lives by jumping into the river the moment they heard the crash above. Some of the men on the superstructure who were engaged in riveting and handling the bars that were lifted from the barge also got off uninjured.

My Grandmother is Margaret Hollenbeck, born in Northfield, NJ...She is the Daughter of Reba and Harlan Hollenbeck Sr. If memory serves me right she has 2 brothers...Harlan Jr. and George(moved to WA)and she has 1 sister Reba(Slotterback). She married my Grandfather James Earl Sear....I believe he only had a sister Alice(Pete)(Fleming), and I think his parents names were Harry James Sear and Alice (I want to say Poley, but not sure)I could be wrong on her Name altogether. If you have any information, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance. Jennifer Sear

I am researching a letter that was written in 1885 to my husband's grandmother. The letter was from a Mary Fleming. In the letter she talked about her husband Clem, daughter Ella and son John. Would like to find out if they had any connection to my husband's family. Any help would be wonderful.

Thank you

I am a descendant of a John Flemming who came from Ireland in the 1850's. He was born 1833 and died 1913. He traveled with two younger brothers, possibly James and Patrick. John was possibly married to a Bridget. As far as we know, one of the brothers eventually went back to Ireland and I am trying to find some record of our relatives overseas.

Eau Claire Argus
Eau Claire, Wisconsin
June 5, 1879

Two weeks ago yesterday a farmer named Michael Fleming, living in the town of Canton, Buffalo county, was returning home from Alma, whither he had been to dispose of a load of wheat, when some portion of the harness became disarranged and his team started to run. The wagon was capsized, and Mr. Fleming, becoming entangled in the reins, was dragged some distance. He was picked up insensible, and taken to Ira Moats' house, whence a messenger was sent for medical aid. Doctors Milligan, of Wabasha, Minn., and McVey, of Alma, were summoned, but they found the man unconscious, in which condition he remained several days, and at last accounts, his symptoms had but little improved.
Lawrence FLEMING/FLEMMING, son of William and Lillian

In 1930 this Lawrence FLEMING or FLEMMING was about 32-33 years old, living in Detroit, MI, working as sales manager for an auto dealer, married to Irene, with one son named George. Divorced mother, Lillian (CONRAD) FLEMING also was in the household. I am trying to determine whether Lawrence was the "Larry FLEMING" later married to Vivian (GREENLEE) YDE later in the 1930s. She also worked for an auto dealer in MI around that time and married "Larry" on the rebound after the break-up of her first marriage.

Looking for my g-g-grandmother who maried John McKissick of Maury County, TN. She would have been born in the early 1800's, as my grandfather, William D McKissick, Sr, was her last child born in 1898. The picture I have seen of her is a stocky woman, and I'm told with red hair. The McKissick family lost track of her after she and my g-g-grandfather, John McKissick, divorced sometime after 1989. I've been told his middle name was Keith; although I haven't been able to locate him yet. Minnie was last reported in the Dallas/Ft Worth area of Texas.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
William L McKissick
