flippo nationality
Classification:
Surnames:
There are two separate nationalities of Flippos. Since they Passed as white in the 1800's they told everyone they were the Italian/Irish descent. My side of the Flippos (From John Henry Flippo) was Chickamauga Cherokee and direct descendants of Dragging Canoe, a great war chief. Several of the family refuted this back in the 1900's because Indians were not allowed to own land, vote, have certain jobs, be educated, and some were even considered not legally married or bi-racial and not eligible for wills or legal monies. this duplicity is why the decendants now have such a hard time proving their nationality and being registered with the tribes. I have worked on this for 35 years and am still a long way off. American Indians are the only people in the world who have to prove who they are. My mother was a full blooded cherokee and my dad was a full blooded choctaw, but I am not registered with any tribe because of these archaic beliefs. Hope that didn't just confuse you more.

Flippos in tn,tx,nc
Classification:
Surnames:
The Chickamauga Cherokee connection is very strong. The descended from Dragging Canoe and Attacullaculla (look them up in the library) readbook titled Decimation Of A Nation. They were told to lie and say they were whatever the local population was or what their wives" family was. So My Granpa John Henry Flippo (born in AL or TX, lived in TX, AL and AR; died in pleasant plains,AR) said that he was Irish /Italian. That way they could be legally married, vote, own land, and be ministers; otherwise, they were third class citizens. Write me if you have more questions. WE are all trying to prove our heritage so we can be registered witht he tribes along with our children and grandkids. God's Love

What is Black Dutch/whatever
Classification:
Surnames:
Black dutch is just another name given to the group of people who wanted to pass for white, and for the most part they were Indians. Not all indians have black hair and eyes and tan skin. Most of us look just like the Irish/ Italian immigrants that married into the family. Pennsylvania dutch is just German ( Deutsch) and settled in PA. Black dutch settled in TNThere they could say they were "whatever ) instead of Cherokee/choctaw etc.

I was wondering if your line of Flippos were related to my line. My grandmother was Lou Ollie Flippo of Greenwood Springs, MS. Her parents were William Sandy Flippo 2/18/1872 -- 12/25/1933 and Selena C. Funderburk 8/3/1871. Her grandparents were Moses S. Flippo and Lucinda W. Martin. Moses served in Company K of 10th Alabama Cavalry CSA. Her great grandparents were Sandoval Flippo and Viney F. Woods. I'm just starting the Flippo line of my family so I don't have a lot of dates. If any of these cross you ancestor's past, I would appreciate any help you can give. Thanks

Classification:

I don't know if the names match or not. My grandfather was born in Alabama and lived in TX and ARK. Died in ARK. He was Chickamauga Cherokee and said that he was Irish/Italian (his first wife's heritage) in order to get around the laws on marriage and land ownership and the right to vote. I honestly do not know but have heard that his father was Byron Flippo but that his real name was (Wincy Bray) of NC.

My email only works part time so just email me here with replies. My grandfather was John Henry Flippo b. AL 1866. He had my mom when he was 51. She was Helen Beatrice Flippo. I have heard that his first wife was Molly/Marie/Mary--Sutter/Sutterelli. My grandmother was his cousin Laura Bray Miller a widow in AR. The only had three children that lived Helen (1917) Verlee (1919) and Ovella (1924). JH's father has been reported to be Byron Flippo born ( Winfrey (Wincy) Bray). Do not know if this is true. He did die in the the civil war and I have searched all records and there is no Byron Flippo, but there is a Winfrey Bray in the War, originally from NC. That is the little I know. It is amazing how many names are similar. My grandfathers first wife was Molly/Marie-Sutter/Sutterelli depending on whether you talk to the Irish or Italian side. He had children named Johnie, Jewel, Dovey Mae, Mabel (the baby is still alive in CA with her daughter). He had a total of 15 with his first wife and they were born in AL, TN, TX, and AR. He then Married Laura Bray who was the Miller widow and a cousin of JH. They had Helen, Verlee, and Ovella and grandma died in 1924. JH died in AR in 1938. He is buried in Pleasant Plains, AR next to his oldest boy Johnnie Flippo Jr. Laura Brays parents were Thomas and Sophronia Bray and they are buried in Macedonia , Independance county,AR. Thomas was in NC in RAndolph County in 1870 and his father was John Jacob Bray and they came from Carrol County and Elk River TN to NC and then back to TN and To AR. I have encountered three separate John Henry Flippo's. I have also heard that John Henry's father (Byron Flippo) was really Winfrey Bray (as is listed in Civil war Records) My granpa was born in AL in 1866. His mother was reported to be Elizabeth Thomason of Texas and her father was supposedly the 4th husband of Zerelda the mother of Frank and Jesse James. Any Luck Email me

Classification:

The birth of my John Henry was 1866 in AL and I don't know what county. He died in AR in 1938. Some of the children sound right but the wife's name was Molly/Marie or Mary Sutter/Sutterelli depending on Irish or Italian relatives. JH (mine) was a Cherokee Indian who stool 6'7" and weighed at one time over 400 lbs. He married Laura Bray Miller in 1915 and she died in 1924. He had another daughter called Dovie Mae and she married a Bryant in AR. My mother was out of Laura and the first born to live. JH and Laura had one set of triplets and two sets of twins that died at birth. I have always heard that Our Flippo name was an alias and that the real name was Bray, which is why he and Laura were cousins. It is interesting getting all of these though. Someday we will sort all of them out and I'll consider you a cousin anyhow. God's Love from AZ

My history professor and some of the people back home (the ones I really trust) said that the Black Dutch were what the High Mt choctaws were called on the census so that they could be counted as white. Indians weren't counted and to get the politics on their side, they counted the ones who passed for whites. Dutch or more correctly Deutch were Germans. Any one who spoke with a gutteral accent was supposedly speaking Dutch. So the language was a big factor also. I don't want to appear to be a know it all it is just that these few things I do know. Cherokees raised as whites or by whites
Classification:
Surnames:
During the trail of tears, there were several sympathizers of the plight of the civilized tribes. The Adair ministers adopted several indian children who were left orphans by the trail. This group of ministers, some Methodists, some Moravian missionaries, raised these children to be "White" for their own protection. In some of the churches Bible entries, they have listed the orphans and who adopted them. Ford could have been a missionary. They also gave these children to parents who had lost a child and they gave the indian child their name and inheritance. Look for the death of a Catherine Ford about the same age as your grandmother would have been. Or Great Great whatever. My grandfather was bron in AL. I am still searching to find out the truth about my own grandmother. She was raised by whites but is not listed as one of their birth children. Good luck to you and email me anytime. I will tell you what little I know. The internet has helped me so much., I have fouond cousins looking for me for 50 years. So keep looking.
