John E. Flory , son of John Green and Sarah Virgil Wright, married Sarah Jane Maxwell. They had several daughters and a son Homer Earl Flory. One daughter Addie Pearl Flory was married to Mansfield (Mannie) Sheridan,a son of Dr. James C. and Dollie Sheridan of Searcy and VanBuren counties in Arkansas. Addie and Mannie were married for a short time and believed to have 2 children ,a girl Sibble and a boy Paul.Addie remarried a gentleman by the name of Greene.Mannie had been married and divorced previously and had 3 children,Homer,Verlie and Dovie.Homer was my father-in-law,and himself the father of at least 8 children.I do not believe he was ever aware of his half siblings.Mannie's descendants would really like to make contact Florey family.

Re: John Flory

Dear Karen - John Flory is also my Great Grandfather. My Grandfather was Charles Flory who married Jesse McCreary (but she passed away) and he had a son Robert. After the death of Jesse, he married Hazel.

I have a death notice in some of my papers about John Flory who was born on August 16, 1861 and died on December 23, 1944. He is buried in Union Cemetery in Dallastown, PA.

I spent many weekends in my childhood at Aunt Myrtle's place in Lancaster, PA. She was married to Fred (who apparently was institutionalized from a war injury- I never met him) She had a Son, Dale Phelps who had a son Greg.

I remember Sarah Neaf; she didn't live here in PA (Denver?) but we saw her occasionally when she returned home. She had a daughter Nancy, I believe.

I remember Uncle Bill and his wife Katherine - I remember him having a wonderful sense of humor. I remember he had a son Jack.

If I'm on the right track, please write to me at lflory4@verizon.net and I'll try to research through some old pictures, etc. to see if I can help you. I'm not sure, but would John's wife's last name be Freed? I recall as a kid that they referred to my dad's grandmother as Grandma Freed.

I have a parchment family tree of the Flory family - not sure who did it but Aunt Myrtle gave it to my dad when I was a kid (I'm 52). It goes way back 3 or 4 generations before John if memory serves me.

It'd would be nice to share notes. My father passed away many years ago and I don't have many relatives from that side of the family to ask these questions. I inherited by grandfathers pictures and I don't know who the people are in the photos and it would be nice to share them.

I hope to hear from you.
Lynn Flory

Barb - Still no luck on the parents of Mary, wife of Abraham Flory, Jr. Was Henry Miller from Franklin County before he moved to Somerset? I have that he died 1812 in Somerset. Is that correct?
My husband has a Rachel Miller(1750-1828) from Franklin who married Curtis Miley. She was supposedly born in Lebanon County, but I have no proof. I do have a lot of Miller notes from Franklin, but nothing that ties to Henry of Somerset.
Someone sent me a note that Abraham Flory's wife was Mary Garver, but they had no proof. Any thoughts?

I'm looking for any information about Jacob Carson Flory and his wife, Mahala Ellen Micheal. They were married in Howard County, KS on 11 Jan 1875, and they had 5 surviving children. All census material I have indicate that Jacob was born in Ohio (abt.1838), as were both of his parents. A cousin told me that Jacob and Mahala were Dunkards and lay ministers. The last census I find them listed is the 1930 census in Great Bend, KS.

Any help would be appreciated.

Here is an old photograph and family list of Joseph FLORY (born 16 or 26 Jul 1820and his wife Sophia FINK of York County, presumably in Pennsylvania. Several ended up near Goshen, Indiana. Here is a brief and quick summary of the details listed on the back. Do not trust my interpretation of spellings or dates, please! I am not related; I came across it but don't have it.

Joseph's siblings:

Joel, born 6 June 1822
Mary, born 25 Jun 1824, married Zachariah KINDIG, buried Deardrop Cemetery, 5 boys
Levi, born 18 Feb 1833 (apparently he moved to Indiana and married Barbara)

Joseph and Sophia's children:

Balinda
Mary, born 1848, married William NEFF, died 1911
Hymer/Himer, born 17 Feb 1849, married
Abraham
Peter, born 4 Aug 1851, married Emma FULLER, died 1 Jul 1913, one son Garfield
Israel, born 10 or 26 Sep 1852, married Jeannette or Nettie HUFF
Anna, born 17 Jan 1854, married Mr. BYLER (?)
Benjamin, born 14 Jun 1856, moved to Kansas, married Lorigan (?)
Don

You should subscribe to the Flora-L mailing list and go to and read exhaustively Ken Florey's web pages:

If I remember correctly to subscribe to Flora-L (Ken's free mailing list) the email address is:
FLORA-L-subscribe@rootsweb.com
(there may not be a hyphen before subscribe)
with the word subscribe in both the subject line and the body of the message, no other text in the body of the message, and no signature block.

Ken's web pages (any one looking at any of the lines and any of the variant spellings of Flory should look at these) are at:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~florey/index.html

If you read this web site carefully (lots of data here) it will give you what I believe is the latest research into the origins of the immigrant father Joseph Flory and many other things. (The middle initial "J" is now believed to be not his middle initial but his sign with the name Joseph Flory written around it. That is, he is now believed to have been illiterate.)

Walt
(fifth great grandson of Joseph Flory the immigrant father)

If they could be any relation to each other at all?
