Flournoy Surname DNA Project

We have just established a Y-DNA Project to provide a method whereby the living descendants of the Flournoy Family can determine which Flournoy Line they descend from and share information on the various family branches. A 37 Marker Y-DNA Test will allow participants to determine that they share a Common Ancestor within the past 5 generations.

To join the Flournoy Surname DNA Project, go to the Website below and order a 37 Marker Test Kit.
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Flournoy/default.aspx
Thank you so very much.

If I can link this up to Albert Yates (being the son of Polly and James) and Martha Motley as I have been trying to for years now, I will certainly post it for others.

SunniMontgomery@aol.com

Re: Polly FLOURNOY/James YATES

This is not my line, but I can make a couple of suggestions.
First, about James FLOURNOY and Ann FARMER. James Flournoy's will is dated 11 June 1795 (Chesterfield County Will Book 5:446). It names his then-wife Keziah and his children by his first wife (Jacob, James, Martha Farmer, Lydda Dunnavant, Nelson, Elizabeth, Jean, Francis, and Polly) and his children by Keziah, who were under legal age (Forest, Roda, Nancy, Peggy Jones, Seth Ward, and Hannah). The will was proved in October 1801.
It adds to the confusion that these families used the same names over and over again. The Polly who married James YATES was the daughter of the James mentioned in the will.
I have a note that this younger James' birth date, 23 February 1763, and the birth dates of his wife and children, were found in his family Bible. They appear in "A Branch of the Flournoy Family" by Mrs. Walter W. Otto in _The Virginia Genealogist _ of April 1971 (vol. 15, no. 2).
The same article says that James Flournoy is known to have received a land grant in 1858, when he was 92 years old (Revolutionary War pension application of James Flournoy, R.3617; Bounty Land Warrant 36606-160-55, National Archives). Sometimes these records also contain genealogical information.
Since women who join the Daughters of the American Revolution have to prove descent, the DAR also may have the records you need.
If you find out more, I hope you will post it here.
Elizabeth Julia Flournoy b. 5 December 1721 in Virginia was the daughter of Jean Jacques Flournoy, who immigrated from Switzerland to Virginia around 1717, a bit later than the other Huguenot refugees. He was the nephew of "my" immigrant, Jacob Flournoy. Elizabeth Julia's mother was Mary Elizabeth Williams. When she married Jean Jacques (John James) Flournoy in 1620, she was the widow of Orlando Jones.
When John James Flournoy and his wife Mary died within 2 days of each other in 1740, their children were all under age. They were Elizabeth Julia (19), Gideon (17), Samuel (16), Jean-Jacques (14), David (12), Rachel (10), Mathieu, later called Mathews (8), Mary (5), and Thomas (2).
You should be able to fill in the Flournoy side of your tree quite easily from information online or in books like Betty Rathbone's SOME OF THE ANCESTORS OF FRANCIS FLOURNOY, SR., OF CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VIRGINIA (1985).
Our Col. Thomas Spencer 1711/1721 abt. married
Elizabeth Julia Flournoy. They had a large Spencer family
who attended the Briary Presbyterian church and they have a lot of history for this family.
I have no history on the Flournoy's. However we have two matching vaces that were told to be from France.
We assume they were Julia's family's. But, we were told they were Spencer vaces.
I can help with the Spencer line if you have any interest.
I would be very interested in the Flournoy line.
We are proud that the family were Huguonuts. My son is a
Presbyterian minister.
Good teachings have been handed down through the years.
blessings
janis21@att.net
Hello,

Growing up in Fresno, CA I knew your grandfather because he was married to my aunt. Uncle Cecil did have brothers. I remember 2 of his brothers were named Jay and "Shorty". Uncle Cecil was pretty close to his brothers. Jay also lived in Fresno with his family and Shorty lived in Chowchilla, CA. I know Cecil passed in the early 90s, and my mom said his brothers Jay and Shorty are also gone now. You have an extended family of Flournoys around those parts. I don't remember very much beyond that and haven't lived in Fresno for 10 years now. Cecil and my aunt had a son named Rodney, but I havn't seen them in years. I hope this info helps.

researching and documenting the immigrant FLOURNOYs

There is a lot of information about the immigrant FLOURNOYs online, but it can be very hard to find DOCUMENTED evidence online. One thing that can be helpful is to check posts from years past. They are all archived and searchable. Be sure to check not only the Rootsweb message boards but also the Genealogy Forum boards --
http://genforum.genealogy.com/flournoy/
Nora Tocus, who is a reliable researcher, seems to have posted a lot there. One thing she says is that "the immigrant Jacob Flournoy, a Huguenot ... came to America in 1700 on the ship Peter and Anthony---if you look on Cindy's List under Huguenots you will find a facsimile of the ship's manifest where Jacob Flournois, sa femme et ses deux garcons (his wife and his two boys) are listed."
Cyndi's list is at http://cyndislist.com/
Also, if one of your ancestors joined the DAR as a FLOURNOY descendant, contact the Daughters of the American Revolution about the evidence she submitted.
Re: Jacob Flournoy, silversmith of Virginia -- arrival

Jacob Flournoy was a passenger from London to Virginia on the ship "Peter and Anthony" in 1700, along with a wife, two sons, and two daughters. (In the words of the ship's passenger list, "Jacob Fleurnoir, sa femme 2 garsons & 2 fille[s].") The ship "Peter and Anthony" was a "Galley of London." Daniel Perreau was its captain. It sailed from London to the James River in Virginia.
The wife who sailed with Jacob has not been identified. She died soon after. His third wife had sailed on the same ship. She was Madeline Prodhom. Her husband, Moise Verreuil, also died soon after arrival. Madeline and Jacob were married in 1703.
The children who accompanied Jacob on his voyage were his sons Francis and Jacques and his daughter Jeanne Francois[e] and another daughter not identified.
Those are the only FLOURNOY immigrants for whom I have seen immigration information. Researcher Nora Tocus says that Jacob's nephew, Jean Jacques arrived in Williamsburg, Virginia, around 1717 and worked there as a watchmaker. He is on a land deed dated 1719 purchasing lots 16 and 17 in Williamsburg.
Jean Jacques Flournoy married, June 23, 1720, in Virginia, Elizabeth, the daughter of James Williams (a lawyer of Welsh descent) and the widow of Orlando Jones. Elizabeth was born in Virginia and was not an immigrant.
One thing to keep in mind is that the first permanent English settlement in Virginia was in 1607. The Huguenots we are talking about arrived almost a century later.

This is a good time to begin researching your family history! There are a lot of resources available. I myself have a subscription to Ancestry.com. Anyone can get a free 14-day trial subscription at their website. They have all the federal censuses and many other helpful resources, and sometimes you can see the actual document, not just an index entry.

Many public libraries have Ancestry.com, and you can access it free if you go to the library. Others have Heritage Quest, and with it (and a library card), you can access the censuses and some other information for free from home. Check with your local library.

Don't forget, too, that all the Rootsweb mailing lists and message boards are archived at Rootsweb.com, and they can be searched for info posted years ago. There also are the GenForum message boards at genealogy.com. You can view the messages for free, although you have to pay to see most of the stuff at Genealogy.com.

Find links to a zillion resources, many free, at cyndislist.com

Have fun!
Laura
I wish I could confirm the hypothesis that it was Harry and Laura (Flournoy) Latham who adopted Harry Buoy, but the evidence is very confusing.

I cannot afford to get birth, death, marriage, and divorce records from Washington DC. And the census records are extremely confusing. For example, the 1910 census lists them as LATHAN, with Harry age 30 and Laura age 38 -- which is ridiculous.

The 1930 census of the District of Columbia lists a Harry Latham whose name and middle initial matches, although his birthplace does not. Harry M. Latham (67) is married to Luree Latham (65). Fred Latham (15) is listed as their son. Laura Flournoy would have been about 80, not 65. Census Place: Washington, Washington, District of Columbia; Roll: 297; Page: 18A; Enumeration District: 183; Image: 145.0.

I would assume that "Luree" was Laura -- EXCEPT for 2 things.
(1) In 1890, there was a Luree DeFluree listed as a dressmaker at 517 12th Street, NW, which was the building in which Harry Latham (and several other people) were living.
(2) Laura's application for a minor's pension under Columbus Freeman's service in the Civil War lists that minor child as "Luree Latham."

Do you have adoption papers for your grandfather? Or anything that mentions Laura (Flournoy) Freeman Latham? Was he ever called Fred? I would be glad to know more.

Best, Laura
keyesperry (add "at" symbol) gmail (dot) com
I just started researching my father's line last week. So I'm brand new to this. I would love to learn where you found all the info listed in the previous post.

Here's what I know. My grandmother was trying to have her marriage to Harry annuled through the church. I have his birth certificate, military papers, attorney's letters, prison forms, but no adoption record. So I have a 5 in stack of letters between a variety of individuals regarding the adoption and if he was ever baptised. I haven't read everything yet.

Harry did use the name Flournoy Fred House Latham. Confusing name order. I'll read my papers and see if I can locate the reference.

I also have a newspaper article about Lurie Latham who was a newspaper vendor in her later years. The article says she fell and was taken to the hospital.

I'm planning to read through the papers next week and will post.

My grandfather born Harry Bouy, but, used the name Harry Flournoy Latham, was adopted in DC around 1915 by Lurie and Harry Latham. According to a 1940 article, Lurie as born abt 1840. Harry was last reported living at 5054 Sherrier Place NW around late 30 early 40s. Don't know if they are related, but thought I would mention it.

My grandfather was adopted by Lurie & Harry Latham around 1915. They lived in DC. As of 1940's at 5054 Sherrier Place NW. My great-grandmother was born around 1837. It was reported in a newspaper article in 1940 that she was 103 yr old. They only reason I think this might be related to your inquiry is my grandfather used the name Harry Flournoy Latham. I don't have any other information on the Lathams.

(First of all, I apologize for no dates. I am not at my home computer, so I don't have the info at my fingertips.) James Harvey was my gggrandfather. His daughter, Eddie A Flournoy, married Homer Archer. After his very early death, she married Claud Hearn. Their daughter, Ruth Elizabeth, was my grandmother. Ruth married Charles Waid. Their son, Charles, was my father. I am Rebecca. I live in Dallas. Does this info sound familiar to anyone? I have a photo of James Harvey and his wife, if anyone would like a copy.

James Harvey was a ggrandfather to my mother Ruby Tobey who passed away this past July. I would be very interested to receive a copy of photo. My mother's connection is thru the maternal line. Her grandmother was Emily P Flournoy( b:16 Jan 1872) a daughter to James Harvey. My mother's mother was Hettie Sylvester Bishop who married OW Coker. My name is Carolyn Morgan Garcia and I live in San Antonio, Tx. Emily died sometime before my mother was born but Hettie went to live with family as young girl so my mother knew her Flournoy relatives quite well

Very interesting insights from you. A distant cousin, Laura Perry, gave me the information about Laura Flournoy. She was married to my great-great grandfather, Columbus Lafayette Freeman, who died young. I have gotten this information from various Freeman researchers. Her son, John Moten Freeman, lived his adult life in Bear Wallow, NC. John M. was my great grandfather. My great grandmother was Mollie Jane Connor.

Laurie (Laura)Flornoy married Harry Latham after the death of Columbus Lafayette Freeman, her first husband. They must have adopted Harry Bouy Latham after that. Thank you so much for that piece of information. Laura was my great-great grandmother. Her line is mentioned on the same page as your reply.

Patricia Hurley Jones

Jacob came from a family of 13 children. I am a descendent of his older brother Jacques Jean FLOURNOY born 15 Sept 1657 in Geneva Switzerland. I have his ancestry dating back to Jean FLOURNOY 1574 if that's helpful.

Do you have any info on the exact date of the other FLOURNOY's arriving in Virginia?
Thanks,
Kirstine
