My name is Ken Fockler in Canada. I just posted a message in the Fackler message board (July 4, 2009). I didn't know how to post it to two boards at the same time!

Some of you might like to take a look at it for the DNA comment and for early Fackler information.

Ken

possible lead. George M Fockler age about 10 living with James Dodrill family. George is listed as an uncle of the much older James. 1910 Census for Braxton. It's possible Elizabeth was not married to his father and at times he used her maiden name. I know he used Dodrill from the time he was of age till he died. Don't know for sure but there was a problem somewhere there and a possible killing that my grandfather said was why he left WV. he left in 1906. George was born about 1903 I think.

Hi, Samuel's son George Lanty Fockler was my grandfather. I knew about George Marion Dodrill but am not sure who his father may have been? Many questions there with some speculation. My grandfather apparently wasn't raised by his parents. Not sure who raised him think it may have been an uncle or his grandfather.
Would like to share what info I have with you and maybe ask some questions if you have any info. You may email me directly at baddt1999@yahoo.com

My wife, Margaret Elizabeth Dodrill, is the great-great grand daughter of Samuel Fockler. Her grandmother was Elizabeth Fockler, daughter of Samuel Fockler and Rebecca Jane Dodrill. Elizabeth had a son whom she named Geroge Marion Dodrill. We are looking for George's father. Do you have any of that information?

Thank you very much.
I did do a quick look and didn't find anything. It is so odd that I am unable to find any of them; maybe the listing of the marriage for John Earl March, Jr and Mary Mary Martha Flocker that gives the fathers name as Alexander is his middle name. But I didn't find Mary Martha listed with her family either.
I will keep looking.
Nannette

He appears in the Zion Lutheran records as Johannes Schneider with first wife, Susanna. She is the mother of his two eldest sons, Jacob & John. He then marries (no record found yet) to Elizabeth (Fockler) Storm and has two more sons - Samuel & Joseph. Johannes/John is alive in 1835 and deceased by 1840. Elizabeth is alive on 8 June 1845 as per John Jr's estate file.

I suspect, but can't prove 100% that Susanna was a Kirchstatten and a sister of Henry Castader who's guardian was none other than Johannes Schneider.

Which child do you descend from? I connect through Samuel Snider & Catherine Cober.

A quote was taken from the "History of York County" by C. Blackett Robinson (1885) which lists one John Snider, Lot 17, Concession 5, Vaughan Township (page 365). It states "John Snider is descended from a family who emigrated from the State of Pennsylvania (near the Susquehanna River) in the year 1800. He is the eldest son of the late Jacob Snider who was born during the Journey his parents made from the United States to Canada".

I do believe that this is the GRANDSON of the John Snider whose will is later quoted in the post. The Jacob Snider referred to by Robinson was the son of the first John Snider [or Johannes Snider] in Vaughan twp.

I know that I was a bit confused when I first read through the very informative posting by laurasnider1, and I hope these thoughts will help someone else to not follow the same path as I started out on.... namely that the father of Johannes Snider was a Jacob Snider who came to Upper Canada about 1800, when it was actually Johannes who came about 1800.

The information that I received is that there are four graves on the old homestead (Lot 4 Con 4) and it is thought that two that are buried there are John Snider and his wife, Elizabeth Fockler. Elizabeth died after 1835 in Vaughan Township, York County, Ontario.

Laura

Hi John, sorry I took a year to answer, but I couldn't find where I had posted my message until now!

Anyway, I'm stuck at John Snider (Schneider) as well....He's so hard to find! Here is his will taken by "History of York County" by C. Blackett Robinson (1885) lists one John Snider, Lot 17, Concession 5, Vaughan Township (page 365). It states "John Snider is descended from a family who emigrated from the State of Pennsylvania (near the Susquehanna River) in the year 1800. He is the eldest son of the late Jacob Snider who was born during the Journey his parents made from the United States to Canada". 1837 Home District Directory - Vaughan Township Snider, John - Lot 4, concession 4 (This was the property he willed to his son, John Jr. and therefore could be a listing for John Sr. or Jr.) Last Will and Testament of John Snider: A memorial to be registered pursuant to the Statute of the Last Will and Testament of John Snider, late of the Township of Vaughan in the Home District and Province of Upper Canada, Yeoman. Whereby the said John Snider did devise his Freehold Estates in the following manner after directing that his wife should have a proper maintenance and support out of his property during her natural life in lieu of dowers. - unto my son, John Snider, all my estate right and title of and in the rear half of Lot 4 in the 4th concession of Vaughan Township - unto my son, Samuel Snider, all my estate title and interest of and in the rear half of Lot 5 in the 4th concession of Vaughan Township - unto my son, Jacob Snider, all my estate right title and interest of and in the front half of Lot 4 in the 4th Concession of Vaughan Township - unto my son, Joseph Snider, all my estate right title and interest of and in the front half of Lot 5 in the 4th Concession of Vaughan Township - in case I shall die before my son, Joseph Snider, attains the age of 21, that the lots of land I have given him shall be let out to the best advantage for his benefit until he attains his majority - rest residue and remainder of my real and personal estate of that nature or kind so ever I give devise and bequeath the same ... to be equally divided between and amongst my said four sons and to their heirs and assigns forever which said Last Will and Testament bears the date 4th day of May 1835 and is witnessed by James Totten of the Township of Vaughan, yeoman and Frances John Bunt of the Township of Vaughan, yeoman and is hereby registered by John Snider, on of the devisees in the said will named, as witness his hand and seal the 12th day of October 1840 (crossed out) day of January 1841. In the presence of James Totten, Thomas Evans signed John Snider.

Which line are you from John? Jacob, John, Samuel or Joseph?

Since Elizabeth Fockler Storm supposedly came to Ontario as a widow in 1808, and married Johannes Snider here and had children by him in 1811 and 1817, it is unlikely that Johannes died in PA in 1804!

It is much more likely that he is the John Snider whose will was written in 1835 directing his sons to maintain his wife Elizabeth ... and that she is the Elizabeth mentioned in the 1845 will of John Snider's son John ... in this manner: “sum of 2 pounds 10 shillings to be paid by my Executors yearly and every year to Elizabeth, my deceased Father's Relict, during the period of her natural life, said sum to be paid from the property bequeathed to my sons, Joseph & Joel...”

As she does not show up in the 1851/2 census for either Markham or Vaughan twp, it is possible that she died prior to the census being taken. However, as the 1851/2 census for Whitchurch twp, [where many of the Focklers lived] does not survive, it cannot definitely be said that she died prior to that date.
Chris,
I don't know if I can help you, but I was born and raised in Lima, Ohio, went to Lima Central High. My grandfather, Frank was a barber and owned the shop in the Norval Hotel. (Now gone.) His brother Ed owned the shop in the Lima House. I have been researching the Fackler/Fockler families in America (including Canada) for over 30 years, and have an enormous data base on various branches of the family. If you could give me more data, e.g. birth dates, marriages, birth locations, etc., I might be more able to search my files. Most of my ancestors came from Miami County, Ohio; Dauphin and Lancaster Counties in Pennsylvania, where the name was spelled Fackler, a name of German origin which is an accupational name meaning torch-maker, or torch-bearer, and sometimes woodcutter. My direct ancestor, Johann Wendel Fackler arrived in America in 1763 and settled in Lower Paxton Twp. in Dauphin Co. PA.

Harry Fockler

If anyone has other info on them I would really appreciate it especially on Samuel Fockler. I now have another dilema, I found a family tree from the cutlip family that has a Lanty Fockler born in 1823 to Cutlip Fockler and Francis?? Does this sound familiar to anyone? I need to try to connect Samuel with his parents. I think he was born in VA or PA. Thanks a bunch!

Hi Rebecca, I'm kinda in the same boat as you. I have my grandfather's name but that's as far as I seem to get. His name was George Lant Fockler. I did find a "Lanty" Fockler but his birth was all I found. I believe his mother's name was Rebecca but have no data on that. I am pretty sure he was born in or around Lancaster, PA. I can give you all the Focklers from my grandfather to the present. My cousin lives in West Virginia but I don't think she has been in touch with the Focklers up in the Smokies. At one point she was going to go up after the spring thaw and see what she could find but I never heard back from her. I really need to take a trip to West Virginia and the libraries there. I am pretty sure we have relatives in the Civil War and in the Revolutionary War. I believe my branch of the Fockler's may have been in America before 1750 but right now have nothing to back it up. If I find anything I will let you know. If you have any questions let me know I will try to help.

I don't even have the paternal Great grandfather name. If you have any information on this line, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Still looking for dconncetion to my grandfather George Lant Fockler, died in Missouri in 1935. Not sure if he was born in PA, maybe Lancaster, or Braxton county or Pendleton County WV. May have been called Lant or Lanty. May have been disinherited? He married a Matchell, supposedly in Missouri but travelled to WV a lot. Can't find any record of him except for 1920 census in MO.

FOCKLER - Missouri

I am researching my husband's family, and can get no further than his g-grandfather. I am hoping someone will be able to help me out! Here is the information I have.
Joseph Fockler, b. January 1859 (possibly in Ohio, although other sources show his birthplace as Missouri and PA), d. 2 Sep 1901 in Johnson Co., MO. Married Mary Ellen McDaniel (or Daniels) on 4 Dec 1884. They had 7 children (George, Mamie, Laura, Grace, Frank, Luther, and Anna). Joseph (age 20) shows up in the 1880 Census in Henry Co., MO, living with George Fockler (age 50), Sarah Fockler (age 45), and three other children (Emmie Fockler - 16, Sammie Fockler - 11, Clara Bell Fockler - 8). No relationship is stated for anyone in this family, which is odd, since every other family on the page has the relationships section filled in. I don't know if this means the census taker just didn't feel like filling it in, or if there was not a father-mother-children relationship. I can find this family in no earlier censuses.
If any of these names sound familiar to anyone, I would love to hear from you! Thanks!
Jill Fockler

Searching FOCKLERS in Michigan, originally from PA thru Ontario

I am researching the FOCKLER families who settled in Worth Township, Sanilac County, Michigan around 1870 and their ancestors. The family originated in Germany/Switzerland and came to Dauphin and York County, Pennsylvania between 1737-1763. Our branch later moved to Whitchurch Township, York County, Ontario, Canada about 1797. Anyone with information on these families, please post a reply to this message board and also contact me by e-mail. Thank you.
