Hi Sandra!

This is Cindy Walder (Foley). We talked years ago about the Foley's. Are you still doing research? I am in the process of putting my website back online. You can visit it at www.OurFamilyFlock.com. It would be good to hear from you again and compare notes.

Regards
Cynthia Walder

I am pretty sure that I know these people. A family tree was done about 30 years ago so I have some information. I know that they were definately married in Watertown, N.Y in 1871 and according to my tree they had 4 sons. There was no daughter mentioned but this was probably an oversight. Please contact me if you have any questions

Hello Alan
You're in luck. I have been looking into the archives of the Penang Gazette and found a one page write-up on William James Foley, retired chief inspector of police in the Federated Malay States. My grandmother, Matilda Foley, was his daughter, one of 20 children! WJ Foley died in 1936. I remember vaguely a grand uncle Alfred. WJ Foley had a son, Michael Foley, who died in the Dardanelles in 1916. I can send you more details, if you wish. Benny
Hello,
I'm answering a post that i believe is very old. My grandfather was patrick james foley. He had a brother named Peter. I'm pretty cetain he had more than one brother, but we don't know how many for sure. I do know that my grandfathers mothers maiden name was hobin. We were under the understanding that he was from placentia bay. Years ago someone from this family came to Grand Falls ( where we lived), and I believe it was a cousin of my fathers.A neighbour told us how she thought it was my father because he was the spitting image of my dad. So I think I can honestly say that we are talking about the same family here Linda, and I would love to hear back from you. Take care Diane

I'm sorry, I don't have any info for you, but I'm a collector of Foley pottery. I have a question you might be able to answer. The tags that were placed on the pottery said that it was made by Acadians. Since James Foley was from England, how could this be? Any thoughts?

Wonderful source to add to our research! I have been to the Allen County Library in Ft. Wayne since posting & also discovered a wealth of information & sources re: Foley lineage(s).
The "Foley Findings" series published by Loretta & Bob Fiebrandt of Orlando Fla. between 1992-1996. (Perhaps other researchers have already discovered this information.)
Volume 5 #2 pg 73 has analysis by Robert C. Foley of Virginia Beath, VA. He mentions that without birth records or other irrefutable evidence nothing is an iron clad certainty.
quote: "Findings cited a Thomas Foley that was working in New England in 1659, and who in 1661 petitioned the crown for relief and return passage. In 1665 a Thomas Foley was transported to the Eastern Shore of VA (Northampton/Accomack area) and in 1670 a Thomas was transported to the North Shore of the Rappahanock by John Mott. Mr. Foley (Robert C.) believes it possible that all three references are for one & the same man.
The edition is too lengthy to quote - I would be happy to provide further information via a copy if desired.
By Ruth and Sam Sparacio, McLean, Va., 1987; from the Allen Co., Library, Ft. Wayne, IN; Children were:

MARRIAGE: Shaunessy, I have Thomas Folie, born before 1650, died 1690 in Stafford Co., VA. Thomas is listed as purchasing land from William Heabeard of Stafford Co., Va on April 14, 1679. I have Thomas married to a Martha Bryant ca 1672 in Stafford Co., Va.. Martha may also have been married to a William Burton on March 11, 1690 in Stafford Co., VA. It appears that Martha was the daughter of an unknown male Bryant and Keziah Arroyah, daughter of Wahanganoche of the Patawomeck Indian Tribe of Virginia. Martha appears to have had had a brother, Richard Bryant, died ca 1705 in Stafford Co., Va, who was married to Anne Meese. For children of Thomas and Martha I have;
(1) Bryant Foley, born ca 1673 in Stafford Co., VA, and married to Mary Jones, ca 1707 in Stafford Co.,
(2) Thomas Foley, born ca 1677,
(3)Anne Foley, born ca 1677, and married to Benjamin Grigsby on September 5, 1726 at St Pauls, Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co., VA,
(4)John Foley, born ca 1678 in Stafford Co and died in 1762 in Stafford Co. He married Margaret Mann ca 1708 and Sarah White ca 1744,
(5)Richard Foley, born ca 1685 in Stafford Co and died ca 1726 in Stafford Co.. I have more info on the lines of Richard, John and Bryant if you are interested. Not everything is documented. Also The Patawomeck (potomac in indian)was a Friendly tribe that helped the colonist... still residing around the "White Oak" area. hit me up if you want some great links....& tell me if I can just list the websites on here? I don't want to get in trouble!, ok sorry for the novel, but our history IS a novel!!

Mike,

Thank you for sharing any info you may find. I have reviewed the 1910 census report in Ireland and came up with possibly 3 leads to my grandfather. The one that looks most promising lists Maurice's fathers name as Michael ( which was my dad's name also). I have tried to search passenger logs coming into Boston( I'm not positive that's where they came into the states, but I do know they did not come through Ellis Island) But the 1930 census report in Boston is accurate, except that my grandfather's name is listed as John). I know that was a true report because my brother was close to my grandfather and they lived at that address until grandfather died in 1958.

I now live in central Florida. I am the youngest of the 4 children my parents had and never had the chance to meet grandpa. Info from my family was always very minimal. Although all have traveled to Ireland I was never allowed. Respectfully, Kim

Albert Foley 1881 Bridlington Quay, Yorkshire.

Albert was born in Bridlington Quay in 1881. In 1891 he was in Muller's Orphan House, Bristol with two siblings following the death of his parents, Thomas and Martha in December and June 1884. In 1901 he was in Mere, Chester. Between 1901 and 1911 he married my Great Aunt Elizabeth Barker born in 1878 in West Heslerton, Yorkshire. They appear in the 1911 census as living in Scarborough but I can find no record of their marriage. In 1909 he was a witness at the marriage of Elizabeth's sister Ruth Barker to Joseph Steel Greer in West Heslerton, Yorkshire so he must have moved from Cheshire to Yorkshire a little while before then. Can anyone help please with any further info about Albert and Elizabeth?

Re: Washington Green Lee Foley of Lavaca County, TX

FYI WGL Foley was one of the early pioneers of Texas. He owned a large amount of land in Lavaca Co. One of his sons
Tucker Foley was a victim of Santa Annas massacre at Goliad.
Another son S.T. Foley fought at the battle of San Jacinto
and another son James R. Foley was killed by the Indians after Texas independence was gained. This family led quite an interesting life after moving to Texas. In reference to the slave narrative that you mentioned, interested Foley
researchers might want to check the 1850 Lavaca Co., TX
slave schedule for the Foley name. They might also check the
1870 Lavaca Co. census for the surname FOLEY.
Parents of Townson & Green Foley

I have recently started research on Townsen(or Townson) Foley and Green Foley. I believe that they were brothers. Townson was born 1808, and Green was born 1810-both in KY.They had relocated to Shelby Co., TN (Townsen) and DeSoto
Co., MS (Green) respectively by about 1835. Green was on the 1850 DeSoto Co., MS census, and Townsen had moved to Jackson Co., AR by 1850. Anyone have any ideas as to who their parents may have been? It is interesting that Crawford
A. Foley (born in Caldwell Co.,KY)married the dtr. of Green
Foley.

I have been researching my Foley's for years. There are no birth records before 1864.I found parent names on one death certificate of a wife Anna Sullivan Foley. I found a lot of information on the "modern" family in old newspapers. Some earlier headstone have the county they are from in Ireland. Church baptismal records of their children I found too. Without a clue as to where in Ireland to look it has been very dismal for me to find my Foleys. I searched relatives here in America spreading out the family line. I did find some relatives who had a lot more information . It was from the maternal side. Good Luck to you.

Kim
Sorry to trouble you but I am now tracking those that went to the States. I am having difficulty trying to find the easiest place to get birth, marriage or death certificates.

Most went to New York area, if you have a site I can use I would be most appreciative. If these certs are available how much do the cost
Regards Mike.

Kim
The info I was waiting on was not helpful for you,but I still have other avenues to explore.
My Great Grandfather had 9 children born between 1856 & 1876. Those children in turn had children born between 1880's & 1920's and one of them could have had a son Maurice.
I now have info on 3 of the 9 and their children (15,7 & 8 = 30)so with 6 left to investigate who knows? I should also tell you that 9 of the 30 went to the states mainly New York. What part are you Living.
Regards Mike

Hi,
I am Alan J. Foley. My great grand father is William James Foley who was from Cork, Ireland. I was told that he came here to Malaysia with the British Army. He then was the first Chief Police officer before he retired and died in Penang.

I also was told that William James Foley was related (I think his brother) to a Foley who worked in the Fire-Station in Cork.

I am the fourth descendant. My dad was named after him.
- William James Foley (Born In Ireland)
- Alfred James Foley (Born In Malaya
- William James Foley (My Dad - Born In Malaya)
- Alan Jude Foley (Me - Born In Malaya)
Rachel Foley married Timothy McCarty, Nov 1880. Rachel was born in KY and at the time of her marriage she was 19. Timothy McCarty, age 28, was born in Mass. as was his parents. Some of the other McCarty families in the area were from Loudoun co, VA and Ireland. Rachel Foley's father was Frank Foley. He is divorced by 1880 census from wife Becky. Would any one know where he went or if he had another family? Did this family "go West"?

Kathy and Don have a daughter Sandy. I believe Sandy now has a child.

James Foley Sr. b. 1715 confusion - Need help Please

I'm having a problem with the Will of (Rev) James Foley Sr. b. 1715. (Son of John Foley Sr. and Margaret Mann)
The data I have seen all over the web shows Mary Young as his first wife and Elizabeth OGLESBY as his second wife.
In his will he bequeaths items to his wife Elizabeth and children.
Here’s the part that confuses me:
‘….for and during the natural life of the said Elizabeth Foley and at her decease to be equally divided between my children by the said Elizabeth, [ to wit ] [ Susanna Foley Oglivie, Presly Foley Oglivie, Leah Foley Oglivie, Lettice Foley and Molley Foley’.
Where does the name ‘Oglivie’ come from?
Why is Foley before Oglivie?
Later in the Will he mentions his other children:
‘Item it is my will and desire the residue of my estate, Personal not before mentioned, be equally divided between my children [ to wit ] John, James , Thomas, William, Bryant, Sarah Watts, and Enoch Foley to them and their heirs forever’
I have these names as the children of James and his first wife Mary.
I only have Molly and Lettice as his children with Elizabeth.

The other problem is many researchers say Rev. Moses Foley Sr. b. abt. 1738 (married 1st Elizabeth Green 2nd. Rachel Watson/Austin) is also James’ son with Mary, but NO WHERE is he mentioned in the will.

Can someone please reply and help me with this?
Is this will for another James Foley?

dretde
My 3x g. Grandma is listed on the 1911 England census as being born in Westport. I am not sure of her birth surname as she was illiterate and the spelling changes from certificate to certificate. Her father is always listed as Hugh, and a labourer.
Re: Red foley

Red Foley's son-in-law is Pat Boone (yes the signer and his daugher Debbie Boone, the christian singer, made herself famous with "You Light Up My Life"), Red Foley, has a school named after him in Berea, Kentukcy, which is in Madison County, (Richmond, Ky, is county seat) Red lived in Berea, for several years. Red used to perform at Mt. Vernon, Ky, at Renfro Valley Barn Dance, a music entertainment center, it is smiliar to the Grand Olde Opery, and Louisana Hay Ride, at one time when Red Foley played at Renfro, it was more famous than Grand Olde and Louisana, a lot of bus tours come down from Canada.

My grandfather and Red Foley were first cousin, I remember when I was a litte boy back in 1965, Red came over to my grandfather's house and played several songs for everyone.
