Hello,

I found your profile on Ancestry.com while searching for Whitson Alexander Russell and since I'm not a paid subscriber I couldn't view your e-mail address and contact you but found that you had posted on message boards and found you here. I am related to both Hopkins and Russell's in Randolph and Montgomery Counties, NC. I see that you have a Whitson Alexander Russell in your Hartsell/Smith family tree.

In 1850 Randolph County NC census I found Whitson Russell in the home of Joseph Hopkins, my 3rd great grand uncle, brother of my 3rd great grandfather, James Edward Hopkins. Whitson and Martha Hardester's marriage record lists Joseph and James Hopkins and bondsman and witness. Do you know what their relationship to each other could be or who Whitson's parents were?

Also, is this your line of Hopkins? Their father was Edward Hopkins who I believe was the son of Benjamin.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Alan
Great to hear from you. I would love to hear about your research into Thomas Folks and family. Since I first posted I have heard from Paul Folkes who is decended from Thomas's son Henry William - Have you been in touch with him? He has sent me a pdf of the family tree back through the mother of Thomas's father, Thomas Folks Snr, but he had drawn a blank on going any further with the Folks family line - maybe you have had better luck?
I am descended from Thomas's daughter Mary Folk(e)s who emigrated to Australia after marrying Richard HARRINGTON in London in 1857. They settled in Victoria and moved around several gold-mining locations before ending up in Diamond Creek, outside Melbourne. Mary died in 1868 and is buried there. I am descended through her daughter Mary Mary Snow Harrington.

You can email me at sarah_johnston@xtra.co.nz.

Not certain if there is a relationship, but the names sound very familiar - My father was John William Folks (d: 13 Jul 96) married Lucille Louise Green (d.). His parents were Levi Folks (d.) and Nellie Harris (d.), both of Northern Virginia. His siblings are/were Lola (d.); Elisha (d.); Mary (aka Red), and Naomi, also of Nothern Virginia. Levi had additional children who may (have) reside(d) in the Carmel Church - Bowling Green, Virginia area (as a result of a union between him and a woman named Bailey).
I do not have a lot of information about the family, but there is a direct relationship to the Jacksons, Bowles, Lees, Pearsons, Smiths, etc. of Northern Virginia. It's a very big family.
Hi Sharyn. It's been awhile since I've checked these boards. I do have a little more information. Willis Hansford married Callie Crowder, who was the daughter of (new info, as yet unverified) William, not Warren Crowder, and Melvina Clemmons or Clements. Melvina full Cherokee.
My mother is a daughter of Willis Maston Folkes and Johnnie Vivian Holcombe Folkes. Willis Maston was a son of Willis Hansford and Callie.
The county library here where I live has an excellent genealogy department, and I plan to visit it soon once I sort out all this information.
Check Genforum Crowder posting #556. This is the lead I am investigating. I am not absolutly positive this is the same Callie.
Feel free to email me with any information or question.

That is the one I am looking at also. As far as I can see GG grandpa Samuel Fulks born in 1816 married Minerva Gardner. One of their children was my G grandpa Samuel He was 16 in 1870.
In 1880 G Grandpa Samuel was married to a woman named Margaret. He had two children at that time. One looks like Lewis W. and the other I cannot tell. Veva J or something like that. My grandfather Franklin Oscar Folks was born in 1884 and married Margaret Carter. I am sure that Lewis W. was his brother but the census records were almost entirely burned in 1890 so I cannot link it that way. I cannot find my Grandfather in any census record in 1900. My father was Merlin Louis Folks.
We have always been told that grandpa or great grandpa changed the spelling of the name, our family history records show the name as Fulks and Daddy was born around Elkinsville, the Brown Co and Van Buren area. My Aunt Martha even says that Grandpa spelled it more than one way.
My mom used to say that Daddy was part American Indian, but I have been able to trace my Grandmother Margaret Carter and she seems to have been German.

Interesting. If I have the right Peter that you are looking for this is how our Folks lines would conect. Richard Folks of Georgia (b.1798), married Martha Ellis of New York, they had seven children: Frank, Fred, Lacey, Peter, Morgan Nevil, John and Richard. Morgan Nevil (b.1825),married Emileson Tilton (b.1828), they had thirteen children. One child being Peter Russell Folks (b.1858)(this seem to be your line). Morgan Nevil had a brother John (b.1835),(this is my line), who married Louisa Victoria Goforth (b.1843), they had eight children. One child being Charles Jasper Folks (b.1865) married Ella Josephine Manning (b.1869), they had eight children. One child being my grandfather!! So that is how it goes. So as you see, there are two Peter's. Richard had a son Peter, and Richard's son Morgan Nevil, also had a son Peter Russell. Do you have any of this information? Does this sound familiar?? Looking forward to your response!!
I promise that my email does work, you can try me again if you like. I am sorry for the slow reply. I work during the day and am getting ready for a big halloween event every night now. I do respond to all of my email, it just takes me a little longer. Anyway, I did look through my "Folks" paper one more time, and the two Peter's are all that I have. Peter Russell seems to be your Peter. I sent am email to my cousin Lynne,(our fathers are both sons of Edwin George Harvey Folks). I had gotten a bunch of Folks information from her. She only has the same two Peter's and also thinks that Peter Russell is probably who you are looking for. I am not sure where you could look. If you have the city you believe them to be from you could find out if they have a genealogy center, or try the local library. You maybe able to find obituaries for some of them. I will let you know if Lynne can give me any ideas.

Annette,
Yes, the Moses Folks I am familiar with was married to Hester. I do not know her maiden name either, I have seen no official record of their marriage.
This is how I am connected to Moses Folks:
His son William Folks married Mamie Clark. ONe of their children was Viola Folks who married my grandfather, HEnry Pearson. Henry Pearson and Viola had Clarence Pearson, my father.
I have tried to find out where MOses originally came from--but I have had no luck so far. Email me at JacksonJ@aol.com if you have any more information.
Rhonda Pearson Jackson
