I was raised in Follansbee, WV ... a town settled by "the Follansbee brothers" who also owned the steel mill. It is located in the Northern Panhandle of WV....wedged between Ohio and Pennsylvania. I've been told there are other towns named Follansbee, too. I think one is in Indiana.

I recently drove through a local cemetery (Dover, OH) and saw a headstone with the surname FOLLANSBEE on it. I was taken abake but did not stop to read it. I'd be happy to look for it again if it happens to be part of your family.

Marlene Heckman Daniels

Bertie - this is Russell's mom; we work together on genealogy. The reason Josiah Chase is not highlighted is that only married people have links and are therefore highlighted. We've not found any information that he was married. As for William Follansbee b. 1665: We haven't found any record of that; just trees on Ancestry with no sources and a record in the IGI "submitted by a member of the LDS church" - not enough proof. If we find anything definitive about him, we'll certainly add him. Such interesting puzzles! Thanks for asking!

Russell-thank you.
I descend from Rebecca and Thomas Chase. I am trying to fit in a couple of Follansbees that wandered up into my neck of the woods in the early 1800's and stumbled on to your site. I was curious why Josiah Chase is not highlighted. Also I have found a William Follansbee born 1665 in Portsmouth on a tree- is that someone's imagination?
Bertie
obnn9119@yahoo.com

We have Ernest Patton Follansbee and his ancestors posted there. His line back is, I believe: Ernest, Frank, Samuel, Samuel, Moody, Francis, Thomas, Thomas. If you'd like more details, why don't you email me at sufo@guicide.com. And if you have information to add to what we have, we'd love to hear from you!

My son and I manage www.Follansbee.info, where we maintain a list of all the Follansbees we have found, including a page of Unconnected ones. You'll find your Joshua there, at Joshua Follansbee-10500. We'd love to update it with any further information you may have. My regular email is sufo@guicide.com.

John H. Follansbee's death record (Stoneham, Massachusetts 1880): John H. was b. New Sharon, Maine, the son of Joshua (b. Amesbury) and Sally (b. Damariscotta, Maine) Follansbee.

There were 15 Follansbees in Essex county in the 1790 census, and I can't yet determine which was Joshua's father, but surely one of them was. Benjamin b. 1761 was one; he moved to Pittston, ME, with his family, including his son Daniel. I have to think Joshua is related; perhaps not a son, but maybe a cousin. Benjamin probably came after 1799, when his youngest son died in Salisbury, MA, and maybe after 1805 when a daughter was married in Newbury, MA. All his other children came to Pittston. This Benjamin's line is Benjamin 5, Joshua 4, Thomas 3, Thomas 2, Thomas 1.

HI Ed,
The information that I have in my Follansbee family tree states that Anne Follansbee aka Foljambe b.abt 1668 Newbury, MA, d. 18 Apr 1708. Married Moses Chase b. 24 Dec 1663, m. 10 Nov 1684, Newbury,MA. They had 9 children.
Anne's parents were Thomas Follansbee, b. 30 Apr 1637 St.Dunstans, Stepney,England. Son of Henry Follansbee, b. 18 Mar 1595/96 / d.? Hamsterley, England/m. 4 NOv 1623 Hamsterley, Eng. Jane Gibbon, b.? / d. 26 Jan 1650 Hamsterley, Eng.
Thomas, progenitor of the Follansbee's in America arrived with his brother William, b. abt 1635. William returned to England & started a business in the West Indies(if I remember correctly,I'm writing in a hurry). Thomas landed in Portsmouth, NH, removed to New Castle, NH and finally settled in Newbury, MA. He married Mary ? abt 1660 and they had 8 children.
I have a lot more on this family. If anyone is interested please email me at NEGD@comcast.net. I even have some photos of the church where Henry attended & possibly is buried. I will have to go back into my old notes for sure.
There is also another contact who is very knowledgeable on the Follansbee family. Got to run.

No, sadly, I don't have any line on Joshua, an exact bp other than MA, or even a clear time table of when he arrived in ME, other than c. 1810 when he's first listed in the US Census there. I'm not even sure what the relationship was with Daniel R. Follinsbee, the other New Sharon resident with the same last name. If I find anything, though, I'll post...hope you will, too.
Thanks-that helps a lot. You dont know, do you if they descend from the Follansbees in Newbury, MAss circa mid 16oo's? I descend from Thomas Chase b. 1654 & Rebecca Follansbee b. 1660. Thomas had a brother Moses who married Rebecca's half sister Ann. Both have descendants all over Maine. Im trying to identify the Follansbee extended family here in Maine from Newbury (or other emigrating place).
Bertie

I have Joshua Follansbee buried at Weeks Mills Cemetery in New Sharon, ME d. 10-17-1863 age 82y. He's listed with Bryden S. Follansbee, d. 12-28-1881 age 69y and his wife Hannah d. 2-27-1892 age 70y. (No mention of Sarah.) I also have New Sharon, ME birth records listing 4 children of Joshua and Sarah: Susan, b.12-23-1807; Jane C., b. 6-10-1810; Bryden S. b.9-8-1812; and Julia Ann b.4-9-1815. I suspect that John Hawks Follansbee and Eliza Ann Follansbee are probably children as well, but haven't found confirmation of that. Julia Ann married James S.H.Green and lived in Stoneham, MA--she died there 1-13-1892. I am from her line and have some info from her forward--but I don't have much beyond this--hope it helps!
Heidi

Md Sarah ? about 1806 in New Sharon, Franklin CO Mass/Dist of Maine.confirmed parent of Bryden/Briden S said to have been born 8 Sep 1812 New Sharon, Maine. Militia rosters during Aroostook War, show Bridon S Follansbee serving in "A" Co Light Infantry 2Reg 2Brig 8th Div headquartered in Fairfield, Somerset Co, ME. The Fifer of the company was John H Follansbee. Am trying to connect the two as brothers. John's middle name may be Hawks and he may have been born 15 May 1818 in New Sharon.
Hi Marilyn,
I will check my notes. I have a Samuel Follansbee, b. 1806 in W.Newbury. He disappeared around 1850. I finally found him & his family in Leominster, MA!! It took years of research to discover who his parents were as the only record was his fathers name on his death record, Samuel. But no mo. names. During that time period there were 2 or 3 Samuel Follansbee's that were of age to possibly be his father. But just last month after finding a cousin I never knew of I found out that he had the proof of parentage! We met for lunch! He lived in Conn. & I in N.H. He even had letters & old photos of my ancestors back in the late 1800's!!!
I am sure we must be related as the first progenitor of the Follansbee name came from England, Thomas b. 1642, and lived in Portsmouth, NH & removed to Newbury. I am a direct relative as I am sure you are.
I'll get back to you if I find something for you. I will gladly share any info that I have on the Follansbee's.
Cheryl

Cheryl--

Yes, my g-g-g-grandfather Ebanezer Follansbee ( 14 Feb 1782 - 26 Mar 1872) gave Newburyport, Ma as his place of birth. He was, however, very clever at hiding his tracks. I have been unable to find any notice of birth in Newburyport or the surrounding areas. I do believe that he had one sister, He was married to Clarissa Taft on 23 July 1805 in the Congregational Church in Northbridge, Ma. At that time his place of residence was listed as Leicester. If you should find any material about his birth or family, I would really appreciate it. He is my brick wall! Marilyn

Hello,
Are either of you related to the Follansbee's of Leominster or Newbury, MA or Portsmouth, NH? My Follansbee line is from these areas. Not too many Follansbee's around back then not to be connected somewhere.
Cheryl Follansbee-Hoxie

Alanson is the brother of my g-g-grandmother Clarisa Caroline Follansbee Farwell. Clarisa was born in Northbridge, Ma in 1806. My records show that Alanson was born 27 Jan 1812-- I can only assume in Northbridge as well. Their parents, Ebenezer and Clarisa Taft Follansbee were land owners in Watertown,NY by 1821.

I was given the following information:

A photo of Anna FARRELL taken on August 21, 1881 at the Leisenring Studio in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Anna appears to be 1-2 years of age at the time the photograph was taken. Another photograph appears to be another photograph of Anna FARRELL, also taken at the Leisenring Studio in Fort Dodge, IA probably in the 1880's, Anna looks to be about 4 years old in the second photograph.

The album has photographs (most unidentified) from St. Paul, MN; Janesville, WI; Canandaigua, NY; Milwaukee, WI; Fort Dodge, IA; and Milton, WI.

Surnames referenced within the album include: LANNAN,
HUNTLY, CHITWOOD, FOX, MASON, FEBRUARY,
LANDON, WRIGHT, FOLLENSBEE

I'm trying to find out if this Anna Farrell is the one related to my husband's ancestors and if any of the above surnames are related to the FARRELL family.
Variations you wouldn't expect for searching Follansbee

I recently searched the Census for my Follansbees in Leominster MA, and found these incorrect entries in the database (the handwriting on the Census form was misread):

In 1880, the name is listed as Tollensbee.
In 1920, it is Tallensber.
In 1930, the name is Hallensber.

I figured this out by using wild cards. I also used the
names of neighbors to get to the right page and then to read down the page to my known address.

Interestingly, these are the only occurrences of these names in those years in a nation-wide search!

I hope this helps with some of your brick walls.

John Taylor

Re: Alanson & Jenny (Southergill) Follansbee

Alanson & Jennie had a daughter Mary (Minnie) in 1866 who married a Charles S. Brown. Records indicate that she (perhaps they) was living in Pasadena in 1917 and 1925. I also have a note that Minnie died after 1937.

Minnie was involved in a big row about her mother's estate in the early 1920's. Her sister Clarissa had a daughter Katherine Sanderson (who married a Hunt). Katherine claimed in court that Minnie and another sister (Emily, who married a Smith) were trying to bilk Jenny of her house and fortune.

I mentioned that Minnie married Charles Brown. I don't know anything about their possible children. But Minnie's sister Emily had a daughter Rosalie (b. 1901) who also married a Brown (Geoffrey C. Brown) and they had a son Geoffery C. Brown, Jr. Whether these Browns too might have been in California and been related in some way to Charles Brown I don't know.

Would be very interested in any photos. I have a good one of Jenny.
