My ggrandmother was Agnes Teresa Folliard (1872-1947). Her parents may have been Reagan (Father from Ireland) and Bridget (Mother).

Agnes was married first to John Carroll and had two sons (Charles 1892-1948 and John Harry 1893-1948). Her second marriage was to Michael Joseph/James Carroll with three children (Agnes, Catherine Marie, Michael James).

The census of population for ireland for 1901 and 1911 are now on line. There is a typing error in the printed format, the name Folliard is spelt Tolliard, and the name Comer is spelt Corner, Look at the hand written original forms.
To search go to site Browse/Roscommon/Ballinlough/Cloonfineen.

Sorry I must have missed the reply, it has been almost 1 year. My wife and I did not make the trip to Ballihaunis, and I would love to hear what you discovered.
I di some digging into the story of the Titanic, and James and Maggie were in Queensport when the Titanic was docked and taking on 3rd class passengers. Their names were on the manifest for both the Laconia and Mauritania, both of which were in port on The same day, and left the day after the Titanic. So the idea that they just missed being onboard is potentially true, but not absolute.
Any information you can share would be appreciated.
My great grandfather Patrick Folliard born 1/1865 came from Roscommon in 1884 to Brooklyn Kings New York. His wife Annie born 1866 immigrated in 1884 too. They had 3 sons listed on the 1900 census including my grandfather Robert J. Folliard dob 11/15/1897 brother Thomas 2/1895 and John 4/1900. In the 1910 census the three sons are in the Washington DC Census but now their mother is listed as Nora Gannon and she is a widow. There is now a 4th son born Alphoncias 8/2/1902. Can't find Patrick or Annie in 1910.

I remember seeing a Wahsingtonian Magazine article in the late 70's or early 80's on the irish in DC. There was a mention of Folliard's and Gannons. I believe they referred to the Folliards as the "Foggy Bottom Folliards". At that time my grandfather said they were not closely related.
paulfrene@aol.com

Robert,

The sir name "Folliard" is French. I think they came in as farmers during one of the Protestant second invasions. The name Folliad is common in some parts of France. I would bet that some place near Normandy (because of the Vikings). My g-grandmother Bridget Folliard born 1862 in co. Roscommon told us storys about a Squire Folliard. Some were Protestant and some were Catholic. While in Irland in Feb 2010, I asked about this and was bluntly told that Irland had no squire.

Mark E.

My wife's grandmother, Margaret Folliard was born in County Mayo around 1892-1895 (she had a tendency to change it as she grew older). She had a sister named Winnifred, and brothers Michael, James and Patrick. Their father was also Patrick Folliard. We do not know the name of the mother, and have no information, aside from the name, of the father.

Margaret (Maggie) and James emigrated to the US in 1912, Winnifred was already in the US, living in Idianapolis. Margaret and James settled in Chicago, along with Patrick. Michael ended up in Chicago as well.

I think Patrick married a woman named Brigid Garvey, but we know nothing else about the family.

We would like to find out more about the Folliards in County Mayo, as we are planning a trip there next year.

Thanks for any help

Hi Brendan,

Thank you very much for your informative reply, I will have a look at the info concerning the Humbart Trail, it sounds very interesting. It's also good to know of an area in France where the name Folliard was common. Do you know of any Folliards in Ireland who were (or became) Protestant by around the 1790s?

Best wishes,
Robert Cameron
Dear Robert

We think the name Folliard originates from France, and there are a lot of Folliards in Orleans in France. Some of our desendents came over in an army led by General by the name of Humbart who came to the aide of the Irish Catholics who were having an uprising against the English. He won five battles and was defeated in the 6th, around the West of Ireland he is very famous and there is a Humbart Trail where you can follow his steps.

Regards
Brendan Folliard

I am still working on this. I have no data on Thomas (Tom) Folliard, his parents or siblings. The Bridget that he married was a Commons/ Cummins and their daughter Adelia was called Bridget but she wasn't born until about 1855.

Thomas Folliard

this should be an interesting subjest, as it seems that most all generations had at least one Thomas/Tom Folliard in each family.

I am in search for 1 Tom Folliard and who is parents were and their roots.

My (my husband's) Thomas Folliard was born in Ireland (?) and died in Clooncan, Co. Roscommon, Ireland or was reportedly so. He married Bridgett Commons, daughter of Peter and Mary Hurley Commons, sometime between 1830 and 1840. They had 7 children: Adelia married John McGrath; Catherine Michael O'Donnell ; Michael died July 25, 1864 as a prisoner of war in Andesonville; Maria b. 1840 maried Patrick Duffy; Peter 1843 married Delia (Adelia) Fitzmaurice; MARGARET FOLLIARD August 15, 1851 married THOMAS LEMIN (from England) in Franklin Furnace N.J.; Annie Theresa August 09, 1858 married John Bonnes/Bonner in PA;

Bridgett and her children came to the States according to the 1900 US Cenus in 1863. She came with her brothers and their families on the Ship Webster, I can not find a list of passengers for this ship in that year.

Thomas Folliard

Our family begins with Thomas Folliard (1819-1902) from Ireland. He came to USA about 1839 and settled in Iowa Co, Wisconsin with his wife, Rose Ann (1824-1908). They settled in Iowa Co, Wisconsin, where they raised 7 children: Maria (Henry Doney), Thomas (Mary Coffey), Robert J, John (Julia Ann ?), Patrick Henry(Lucy Hodges), Matilda (Matthew Schumers), and Rose (Chris Schlosser).
Thomas and Rose Ann are both buried at St. Malacky's Cemetery, Clyde, Wisconsin. I have a lot of information regarding Patrick's line, however very little regarding his siblings. Anyone have a connection to any of these families?
