Can anyone in the USA assist me in locating information on my great grandfather Samuel Harris FONES.
He arrived in Australia on a whaling ship in 1843. Here, he jumped ship at Fowlers Bay on the coast of South Australia with a fellow shipmate Joseph Cummings.
Together these two young men aged around 14 to 16 years - trekked across unchartered territory of South Australia - making friends with the natives and living off the land. Their amazing trek ended at Port Lincoln, South Australia when they were arrested for illegally entering the country. However, as they were able to give detailed descriptions of the land and its features both young men were pardoned and given grants of land.
Samuel Harris FONES was then employed by the Surveyor General to assist with the opening of new land for farmers in the community of the Eyre Penninsula, South Australia. He is recognized as a great pioneer of the region.
Samuel used only the name Harris whilst in Australia. He married Elizabeth Lowe under the name of Harris and all his children were christened under that name. It is believed that Harris was his mother's maiden name. On his wedding certificate he names his father as LYMAN Harris.
When Samuel's wife died in 1900 he returned to the US - to Council Grove, Morris County Kansas. It is said that he had brothers there who were farmers. Samuel is believed to have died in a hotel fire in Council Grove in 1917. He was buried under his real name Samuel FONES.
If anyone can help me trace my great grandfather I would appreciate any assistance. Many thanks for this opportunity.
Kindest regards
