Hi

I just found this message on one of my old computers and transfered it over to this one. Somehow I missed this note

I would of course be very interested for more information on the marriages. In fact, it is quite exciting. I love the information here. So please do share

Respectfully yours
Linda Masters
Hi,

Regarding Samuel Fones and Hannah Briggs, I don't know anything of their background. The only references I have found locate them in North Kingston Rhode Island in 1760 when they apparently married. I do know my ggg grandparents William Fones and Dorcas Sherman settled in New York. Do you have any details of where Samuel and Hannah may have lived or anything about their children?

Many thanks
Karen Kestigian

G'day,

My ggg grandparents were William Fones and Dorcas Sherman.
I would like to verify the parents of William Fones and his wife Dorcas Sherman.

William Fones was born 1764 Rhode Island possibly Nth Kingston. He married Dorcas Sherman about 1789 in Easton, New York and died Wales Center 1839.

I have narrowed the possibilities of his parents to: Samuel Fones and Hannah Briggs and/or
Daniel Fones and Mercy Remmington.
Can anyone please assist me in identifying who his parents were?

I have not been able to identify Dorcas Sherman's parents. One reference stated she was Irish - I have not been able to verify this information.

Many thanks for this opportunity and the time you have given in reading my email. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Kindest regards from the Land DownUnder
Karen Kestigian
I have a Joseph Edgar 'Ed' Fones who may be part of your family. His birth was either Nov 1876 or 30 October 1877. These dates have appeared in many places. However, he is buried in Council Grove, Kansas. Story is that he was born there too but one census states Missouri. Joseph married Emma Edith Hickman and she is from my family. Please contact me. idigcemeterys@msn.com

Linda Doile Morris

Hello, If you have gone this far with documentation, we are most likely cousins. Emma Hickmans parents were Milton E. Hickman and Mary Ellen Reeder. I have a family photo of them with their children as my Grandmother was Delilah May Reeder (Doile) sister to her. I have the family back to 1731 and am excited to find your message. The historical societies in Alexandria and Washington D.C. may have listings for the obit's. I will search through my old e-mails as I have corresponded years ago with some Fones from Alexandria.
Joseph Edgar Fones

I think Joseph was born in Missouri. Do not know that. He did however marry Edith Emma Hickman in Cottonwood Falls, Kansas and their first child, Mamie was bron in Council Grove. The family had five children born in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. I am looking very very hard for all of them but the timing was wrong for much on the census. By 1910 their second son Theodore had custody of the three youngest children and the parents were presumed dead. That was in Council Grove also. Please if you know of any of the following children, please write to me. I have a tree through their mother that goes back to 1731 in this country. I would love to give it to them.
Mamie b. 1898
Thedore Edgar b. 1902
Earnest b. 1907
Elsie b. 1910
Marvel 1907

Now the dates vary by which census you look at so these are only guesses.

Thank you very very much.

Linda

Hi,

I just came across you query about the Cole and Fones family connections. My ggggrandfather was William Fones born in Nth Kingston RI - he fought in the Revolutionary War and his friend and neighbour was John Fones. After the war they left RI and went to Erie Co NY. William Fones married Dorcas Sherman and two of their daughters married Cole boys. One of those boys was Benjamin Cole. If you want more precise information I can send you what I have on the marriages etc. I think we might have a match!

Kindest regards Karen Kestigian

PS: William Fones is buried in Wales Centre Cemetery along with John Fones - they are the only two Revolutionary soldiers there.

Hi Melissa,

Thanks for your reply. Can you tell me which of the children your grandmother descended from, please? That would help with the family tree I am putting together. So far I have managed to find a descendants from the following children of William and Dorcas - John, Dewey and Lyman Fones (Lyman is my gggrandfather). Does the research you have contain who the children married? I can help you with that information. William Fones is buried in Wales Centre NY. I also have his war records.

My email address is: mkkestigian@beyondtech.net

I live in Australia - Lyman's son Samuel (my ggrandfather) ran away to sea at an early age - he was on the whaling ships. He jumped ship in Australia in 1843, eventually married and had a family. Then around 1898 he returned to his brother James K Fones in Kansas and later died in the US but I have not been able to find him as yet!

All the very best wishes from DownUnder.

Regards Karen
Hi,
Thank you for your reply. I would love to receive more information. I have been trying to verify my ggg/grandfather's
parents for quite sometime now and also any siblings he may have??!! It was a stab in the dark for me regarding Samuel Fones and Hannah Briggs - I would appreciate any assistance you can offer. I received another report for (my) William Fones that his parents were Daniel Fones and Mercy Remmington but have never been able to reconcile this with any real verification. Again thank you for contacting me and I look forward to exchanges information with you. Warm Regards from DownUnder
Karen Kestigian

Hello,

I wish I could be of more help. I can tell you that the names of William and Dorcas' children do match with the list of names that I have as well. So it would make sense that Samuel Fones and Hannah Brigss to be the correct names you were looking for. Unfortunately, I just got all of this information yesterday from my grandparents house and the research ended at Sameul and Hannah. If I come across anymore information I will pass it along for you. My grandmother did this research many years ago trying to prove lineage to the Revolutionary War.

Best Wishes,

Melissa Chatterson

While I can therefore find presumptive ancestors in the late 17th century--a Thomas Fone/ Fownes in Plymouth for example c 1620-- the link I cannot locate is the father of Thomas Fone of Bristol, and his father so as to connect them with the well docuemnted earlier bearers of the name.

The earliest of Thomas's children were born to Thomas & Elizabeth BARTLETT in the 1720s, per the North Farnham Parish Register. When Thomas wrote his will in 1767 he listed his wife as Catherine. The first 5 children of Thomas, at least up through Thomas Jr in 1732, all named a daughter and had granddaughters named Elizabeth, and NONE named Catherine. The last child, Elisha BARTLETT, probably born about 1844 named a daugher Catherine. So I think Catherine may have been the mother of the last few children of Thomas - I think the last four are Mary b c1736 m Thomas SCOTT; Bathsheba b c1740 m Charles FONES; Sarah b c1742 m Joseph SCATES and finally Elisha b c1744. So Bathsheba is on the borderline - and she had no children named either Elizabeth or Catherine to give us a clue. Neither can I find a granddaugher named Elizabeth or Catherine.

I am trying to trace a female line back to Bathsheba and her mother (Elizabeth or Catherine), but on the FONES website there are only sons and Letty... (if we can trace a female line we can use an mtDNA test of a living person which would be the same mtDNA as Bathsheba and her mother; and I'm also trying to do the same thing on the Sarah BARTLETT SCATES line)

In my records I have a Bartlett FONES (female) b 1784-94; m 7 Oct 1807 Westmoreland Co, VA Thomas SANDERS. I don't see Bartlett FONES on the FONES Website. Have you ever seen any info on a Bartlett FONES? There are 2 Thomas SANDERS in Richmond Co, VA records - hard to trace - but by 1850 Thomas SANDERS has a different wife... Some of Bathsheba's other children married in Westmoreland Co, VA, too. Do you think Bartlett FONES is part of your FONES?

Thanks again for a great website.

Jim Bartlett
BARTLETT-DNA Project Admin

Hi Judi,

I am writing to you from Australia. I am also a descendant of the Fones Family. In reading your posting I thought we might have a
connection as members of my family were in New York and went to Illinois and surrounding states.

There is a John Fones included in this group. Do you have any information on grand parents and g grandparents of your John Fones - we might find the connection there. My ggggrandfather was William fones born in Nth Kingston RI - who left with his wife and settled in New York - his eldest son was John Fones.

Look forward top hearing from you
Kindest regards from DownUnder
Karen Kestigian
