Just recently I also found an article by Dr Walter Maas called The Dutch Villages in Poland. It was presented at a conference at Oxford in 1952. Dr Maas is a geographer who is/was teaching at University of Dacca in Pakistan. The article reveals the when, where and how the Dutch ended up in Poland.

Now the task is to find the birth certificates from the Catholic Church in Poland as they will tell for certain if the Fonfereks/Fafereks were "Hollanders".

I have located the town in Poland where my ancesters came from. It was Pianowka Poland. Hoever, I do not believe that the Fonfereks were Polish in origin as the name phonetically sounds much like a Ducth name van varick. So how did they get to Poland. During the 1500s the Polish govt brought in the Diucth to help with farming etc. I haven't searched back far enough but the church records would have a notation that these folks were of Netherlander ancestry.

Research

Fonferek is a Polish surname spelled Fa~ferek. I've contacted Fonfereks in Poland and Germany to see where their ancesters came from in an attempt to locate my family tree. All Fonfereks in the US are direct descendents of Peter Fonferek born abt 1826 in Poland/Prussia. He arrived in the US with his wife Agnes Piotr Fonferek and 2 children Lorens and Valentine. Two other children Magdalena and Konstantia died in transit. They settled in DePere, Brown County Wisconsin in 1870.

I have talked with a Doris Fonferek fro mBuren Germany and a Herbert Fonferek from s Poland. Their ancesters came from Smieskowo near Czarnkow. I actually found Doris's great grandfather and his parents marriage records. Check my website at www.familytreemaker.com for other places I have found Fonfereks. I continue to look at birth/death records at the Family History Center for that area of Poland.
