Hi;

Yes; I've got the full GEDCOM file of Stefan Fons. I am trying to investigate the Fons family in Poland, unfortunately the records from this area are very incomplete, unclear etc. in plus: written in 3 languages: Polish, German gothic and latin.
From what I've learned so far: it's not clear that Stefan ever came to US (no record found there). It's sure that 2 children from his 1st marriage with Mary Chmielewski went to US between 1865 and 1877 plus 3 children from the 2nd marriage with Maria Turczyn. Maria Chmielewski died in 1854 in Poland and never came to US, for Maria Turczyn it's not clear (as well as for Stefan).
Stefan's gransons founded the famous Fons & Co. mortgage loans business plus real estate agency in Milwaukee. One of them also run for a mayor of Milwaukkee.
My granfather exchanged some letters with them till late 1950's. Then the contact was lost as my granpa was imprisonned by the communists for being in touch with the family in the US.

I'd love to exchange some info on the family. Please contact me at Karina.SZTANDERSKA@ec.europa.eu
I am interested in knowing if your Fons family is the same as my exhusbands family. I have 2 sons with the Fons last name. My husbands grandpas name was John Fons. Don't know his wifes name. He died at age 87 (i think) in the 1970's. He had one son, Ray Fons (deceased). Ray was married to Sylvia Millman from New York city. They moved here to raise their family. They had 3 sons: Jeffrey (deceased), Glenn,
and Ronnie. I married Glenn (we are not in touch) and we had 2 sons, Ethan and Jacob.
Grandpa John would never share any info about the family. With his son dead there is really no one to go to for information. I would like to have some info to share with my sons and their children. Grandpa John said that he was Polish.
Thanks for any info you can share.
Hello,
I have recently found out that my Great Grandfather was John Fons, born 1879, son of Theodore Fons of Cassel in Marathon County.I know that he was the 1st born , as he is the only child listed in the 1880 census.I don't know if he had siblings born later. John moved to Whitefish Bay, WI with his family sometime in the early 1900s and was living there when he lost a race with a train in 1922. My Grandfather Alex was his 1st born child and he had many sisters and I believe, 1 brother.I would love any info you may have discovered about that family grouping, as I was adopted out at birth and really am limited ( due to protecting my mothers identity ) from contacting anyone, to personally ask. I have 2 sons and would like to have a bit of history for them. One of my Grandfather's sisters was named Vitalis, a very unusual name if that helps at all. I would really love a photo or two.It is strange not knowing who you look like. My curiousity has grown as I have gotten older. I have been searching things out on my own, but haven't figured out a way to go further without risking my mother's privacy. I'd really appreciate any info. Thanks, Therese

I agree with "ksztande"'s post which says they were from West Prussia and the name was spelled with an "a." I have some records of my family where a person's name is spelled "Fas" in one place, and "Fons" in another. And almost all families related to me are from the West Prussia region.

Pauline Fons was my great great great grandmother... I'm not sure that all of Pauline and Martin's children are listed as I have been told she had up to 11 children. She was born near the Germany/Poland border, not sure where, but it is interesting that Martin Schram's last name was spelled differently originally. If you have a gedcom file or anything where I can add all of that more effectively than by hand that would be awesome...

Martin Schram was born on October 12, 1855 in Germany. I'm not sure anymore exactly how many children they have... I'm mostly sure they had 11; I need to confirm this. But I have gotten the names of August, Andrew, Joseph, Stella, Clara, Rose, Mary, Martin, John, Frank, and Theresa (Tracy). They lived in Bailey's Harbor, WI. August was my great great grandfather, and he owned an ice cream parlor in downtown Bailey's Harbor... in fact, the building it was in is marked "A. SCHRAM" on the top. He married Martha Kaczmarek, and had 4 children: Angeline (Angie), Lucille (my great-grandma, who is the only one of the 4 who is still living), Leon, and Dorothy (who died when she was only 13 of a sudden illness.)

Hope this helps! I have a little more deeper information if you want; it's easiest through a gedcom file or something. Just email me back if you want any more info.

Hi John. I think my father is your cousin. His name is Stanley Fons and he was raised in St. Louis. His father's name was Anthony L. Fons, and his father's name was John Fons, from Wisconsin. I can ask my father for more info. He's a retired radiologist and lives in New Hampshire. I'd love to learn more about the family because I know very little. I didn't even know the name of my great-grandfather until recently. Thanks for your help. Gail

Hi Mike. From what I have recently learned, I think Stefan was my great-great-grandfather, and his son, John, my great-grandfather. My grandfather was Anthony L. Fons, and one of his two sons, Stanley, is my father. I'd love to learn more about the family.

Gail,
Yes, your father, Stanley Fons, is my cousin. I remember his name and may have met him a time or two. He was more of a contemporary of my older brothers Rodney and Peter. I very certainly remeber your grandfather, my Uncle Tony. When I was living in McLean, Virginia in the late 70's he visited us and my children at first thought he was their grandfather, Peter Fons, Tony's brother. They did look much alike. I have a picture of Tony, Peter and Jack in my halway, together with a picture of the entire Fons clan in Wisconsin in the early 1900's before Tony was born.
I'm happy to hear from you. I'm also glad you also contacted Mike Fons, who is Jack Fons grandson.
I have four grown children: Kathy Barkley, who lives in Atlanta with her husband Ben and two children, Carden and Claire; Philip Fons, who lives with his wife Kersten and their two children, Kallen and Peter, in Memphis; Laura Fons, who lives in Atlanta; and Molly McLeod, who lives with her husband, Lang, also in Atlanta.
I live in Tallahassee, Florida with my wife Kay. I am an attorny practicing telecommunications law.
If you need more information on some of your other John Fons family members I'll try to help.
Please tell your father hello for me. If he'd like, I can give him Rodney's e-mail address. Rodney still lives in St. Louis as does my mother, Phyllis, who is 98 years old. I'm sure your father will remember her. My brother Peter, who lived in San Fransisco, died three years ago.
I hope to hear from you again.
John Fons

Hello Shelley,

I'm sorry I don't agree with you. Fons was always spelled as Fons (or Vons).
It's believe that they originally came from the Netherland and later moved to Germany.

If you want some more information, you're welcome to visit my Fons/Vons site at

http://www.gironet.nl/home/korvel

If you've any questions, don't hesitate asking.

Best wishes,

Erik

John Edwin Fons
I believe we are cousins. Your grandfather was my Uncle Jack. My father was Peter Fons. I knew your grandfather and grandmother - Aunt Thelma. The farm that our fathers were raised on in Door County is in my family. Actually, during the late 1940's I stayed with your grandfather and grandmother in their apartment in Chicago. Also, my father and your grandfather worked in the lumber camp together. I have a picture of them there.
I'm afraid much of what I know of your great grandfather - my grandfather - John Fons is rather sketchy.
I would love to hear from you. I knew Lloyd and Jack Lincoln only slightly, although my late, older brother, Peter Fons, knew whichever one lived in Texas rather well.
I live in Tallahassee, Florida, where I practice law. I grew up in St. Louis.
John P. Fons
jfons@ausley.com

My grandfather - john fons- lived in Door County Wisconsin. The farm is still in the Fons family. My father - Peter Fons - and 12 brothers and sisters were born there. My father, who was born in 1896 and died in 1985 believed his father first arrived from Poland in Milwaukee where he worked as a tool and die maker. He and his wife - Suzanne Gus - then moved to Door County to homestead 80 acres. My father believed that his family was Polish, since they spoke Polish, but he never could tell me where in Poland. I had been told that the Fons name was Fos or Fas, but I have no proof. I know that there are many Fons' in Milwaukee, who I belive are related to my grandfather, including Louis Fons who once ran for mayor. Are we looking for the same ancestors?

My paternal grandmother's mother was Mary Ann Fons. I have also seen the name spelled Fas! My grandmother, Joanna (Radecki) Szyman (Szymankowski) was born May 23, 1901 in Chicago. I know that Mary Ann's husband, Joseph Radecki was an immigrant from what was then Germany but now Poland and was naturalized 3/27/1894. I don't know if he married in Poland or USA.

Are we cousins?

Bob

What I know/I'll spread the word

My name is John Edwin Fons, born July 12, 1949 in Ludington, Michigan, the son of Lloyd Chancelor Fons and Venita Hansen. My grandfather's name was John Fons. His wife, my grandmother, Thelma Klingenberg. My grandparents are buried on Washington, Island, WI, where my father was born in the l920's. My grandfather worked as a lumberjack at a very young age, foreman of a lumber camp in his teens. Stories about his strength were retold on the Island when I was a boy. Grampa trained as a civil engineer and supervised building many of the roads on Washington Island. My father has an older brother, Lincoln Fons, currently of Casper, WY. Lincoln has a son Ricky. The Fons family left Washington Island during the Depression era and moved to Chicago where Grampa worked as custodian for a row of brownstone apartments. He loved to dance and was also an amateur prizefighter. John and Thelma returned to Washington Island after the Second World War. They left the Island in the 1960's because of Grampa's failing health and moved to Sturgeon Bay, where he died. The brothers Lloyd and Lincoln Fons served on the PT boats during the Second World War. Lincoln knew Jack Kennedy. JF

FONS' FROM WISCONSIN

I am a Fons from wisconsin, I was born in Milwaukee and am 3rd generation US born. My grandfather was August Fons who also imigrated from what was then Prussia, He was from a large family, but I know little else. I have relatives in Germantown, Wi, Colorado, and East troy, Wi. I know that he married a Mahalski, and had an uncle that took care of the Milwaukee Police Departments stables when he was young. I am also trying to get some history on my family as my parents are getting older and I would hate to lose my heritage. My grandparents spoke Polish, and some other eastern block languages. Maybe my family info can help you a bit. Thanks
