Long Foody History

My great grandfather Thomas Francis Foody (1852-1938) was one of 13? siblings from Cairns, co Sligo (and other areas in Sligo and Mayo. Siblings included: William (used Swift) b 1854, Edmund b 1859, Patrick (used Swift) b 1858, Michael b 1866, john 1865-1908, Martin (used Swift) b 1865 , joesoph b. 1868, Alice b1871, Mary b 1873, Bartholomew (used Swift) b. 1875. Pls note, dates have not been verified. Thomas Francis Foody came to PA for a short time, where I know other Foodys were, and married Catherine Jane Oliver, before moving to Chicago IL, where tons of Foodys are still today. In PA he was an organizer of the early steel unions, and as family history says he was heavily involved with Molly Maguires. His daughter burned all incriminating momentos in the 30's when he died. His children were: Ann (1887-1936), Alice (my grandmother), her twin Thomas Francis Jr (died? he disappears), Patrick and Walter. Patrick was a bonifide genius, with the univ. of chicago wanting to study him and his iq. he refused, being very introverted.

My great grandfather's brother William (Swift) had 5 boys and 2 girls. the girls wound up in California. The boys were: William, Joseph?, James (of Masontown PA.) Only Joseph had children. I do not know the son's name but he lived in colorado Springs, CO. The girl was Betty and married James Mickey in Michigan.

Brother Bartholomew, the youngest of the 13 or so, was married twice, with no kids. He was a sexton in a church in Philly.

Brother Michael had two sons. Some in my family thought it may have been the two listed in the 1947 NY phone book, a Michael (a lawyer) and a Bartholomew.

Apparently, there was bad blood between Thomas and Patrick. They never kept in touch after immigrating.

The parents pf all these brothers, Thomas and Alice Ferris used Foody mostly, but she was buried under Swift in Liverpool. She was a political activist, teaching women not only to read and write, but faught to perserve Gaelic. She was imprisoned for her activities, dying of tb in jail. Perhaps family lore embilishes, but I was told her sons all went to the jail and carried her body off, but english officials intervened, and refused her catholic burial. no one has been able to locate her grave yet.

Many Foodys went to Liverpool for work prior to coming to the states. Some stayed. This exact connection is not confirmed, but 99% accurate, I think: My great, great grandfather Thomas' great uncle was a sea captain, a Thomas Swift who made frequent trips to the states. his son, another Thomas, had a merchant-tailor business in Liverpool and a business in Ballina, co. Mayo.

his youngest daughter was Lily Swift Webb, an actress in London who performed with Ethel Barrymore and others. Lily's neice Mary Josephine Swift (1865-1911) was also on the London stage in opera in the late 1880's.

To make it more confusing, Mary Josephine married distant cousin John Jospeh Foody (1863-1908 died in Mt Carmel IL)His parents were Patrick and Sarah Horan of Co Mayo. This info was taken from a 1961 letter to my great uncle Walter Foody from a (Mary) Gladys Swift Reid. her siblings were: Thomas David, John joseph, Harold Vincent, Martin Francis, and Lillian Veronica.

Just to put some other names down, in case anyone might recognize them: My great uncle Walter corresponded with Thomas and Agnes Swift of Melbourne, FL(they were in their 70's in the early 70's)

Martin Swift, a postman in Oak Park IL, and his twin brother James(lotsa twins in this bunch!)worked for gas company, are mentioned.

Gladys Swift Reid's kids were an eye dr, a nun, 2 teachers, and at the time of the letter, a teenager of 17 in 1961. Their dad was Scottish.

Betty Swift Mickey mentioned a brother Bill of Baltimore, MD b 1922, with 2 kids. she mentions her aunts Mary? and Margaret in CA.I think (but not sure) Betty's dad was Joseph and grandfather was william Swift, one of the 13 brothers.

Betty's brother joe Swift lived in San Francisco.

Also, there was correspondance from a Jeanne Foody Beaton of San Antonio, TX, b. 1924, brother William Joseph Foody b 1927. Their father was William Cornelius Foody. and grandfather was William Bernard Foody. Wm. Bernard had 3 brothers in the us..Tom, Martin, and Mike

Anyone recognize anything??
