Hi Rob
My Emma Elizabeth Fooks was born Jan 1790, Melcombe Registry, Dorset England. She and Thomas Lipson were married 30 July 1812. They then came to Australia with their five children in 1836 and he became Harbour Master of Adelaide and was highly connected. I have Elizabeth's father as William Fooks and mother as Ann Williams McKenzie from Dorset. I notice Ancestry.com mentions Dorset Parish records in their November newsletter. Hmmm . . . not sure if we are on the right track but I assume they are probably related as they all come from Dorset area. I would love to see your/our William's Probate - my email is jillyinnes@bigpond.com. I haven't tried to find a death certificate as yet as I keep finding other relatives who distract me and I go off on another tangent. I look forward to your thoughts.
cheers
Jill

Hi Jill - I'm not absolutely sure we have the same William Fooks. Do you know when and where Elizabeth and Thomas Lipson married? Was she from Dorset? And did they stay in the UK do you know?

I found the baptisms of Mary Ann and Elizabeth here:
http://www.opcdorset.org/WeymouthMelcombeFiles/MelcombeSM-Ba...
They seem to have been baptised twice - 19 July 1808 and 19 July 1809 - could be an error in transcription? I am pretty sure this is 'my' Mary Anne Fooks and assume that Elizabeth was her sister. It could be your Elizabeth Emma born 1790 I suppose?

I have the will of Mary Ann's father William Fooks (proved 1849) and can email it to you. This will mentions 'my daughter Mary Roberts the wife of Lieutenant Lazarus Roberts', so I know I have the right Fooks here! But no mention of another daughter Elizabeth.

Looking at FreeBMD I think you're right and this must be the will of William Fooks who died in 1844 as there is no William Fooks died at Weymouth/Melcombe in 1849 - in fact only one William Fooks who died at Weymouth in the 1840s - and sometimes probate took a while I think. I haven't ordered up the death cert to see how old he was - have you?
Regards
Rob

Hello, I too am searching for information on the Fooks family. Elizabeth Emma Fooks 1790-1880 married Thomas Lipson 1783-1863. I only know her father's name was William, although my dates are different to yours - I have 1756 - 1844. Is this the same William Fooks? If so, do you have any other information on him? I don't have anything on the Roberts side so am unable to help you there.
regards
Jill

Hi
This thread might have gone cold but if not I'd like hear from anyone who has anything on William Fooks of Dorset, 1783-1849. His daughter Mary Anne married Lazarus Roberts in 1823. Their eldest son was James Mackenzie Roberts, 1824-90. Mary Anne was baptised with her sister Elizabeth on 19 July 1808 (although she was born in 1802), at Melcombe Regis. I am pretty sure William was brother to James Mackenzie Fooks, surveyor. My website has more on Lazarus and Mary: http://tinyurl.com/3qmoond
Rob

Re: Fooks in Md

My apologies, crabcooker, and others, I should have been a little more explicit with my information. I expand a little here in the hopes that the Fooks-Layfield connections may, in fact, be connected in some way to the other Fooks family line already mentioned.

William Fooks (likely the family surname spelt Fookes in earlier generations) was born 1804, Worcester County, Maryland. He was the youngest son of William Durand Fookes (1760-1833) and Ann Ennis. William (b.1804) married twice - (1st) in 1828 to Patty D Brown who died 15 Aug 1836, after having had 4 children, (2nd) in 1837 Mary Ann Brown (Patty's sister)and they had 4 children, the eldest being Nehemiah Fooks, b.1837. Nehemiah married Beatrice Vincent.
Nehemiah's second daughter, Annie V Fooks, b.1877, married Oswald Layfield. My source indicates 31 Aug 1898 as the marriage date but does not include the location!

All of these individuals resided in Worcester Co, Maryland, or nearby, as far as I can ascertain.

Now, William Fooks (b.1804) first mentioned here, had 7 siblings, one being Daniel Fooks, b.1785 in Worcster County, Maryland, but he obviously moved to Marshall County, Kentucky as he and many members of his family lived and died there. Daniel's eldest son was James Liburn Fookes (Fooks) who was born in Worcester County in 1816, died in 1898 and is buried in Fooks Cemetery, Marshall County, Kentucky. I have considerably more detail of this family and other siblings.

Much of this data has been derived from Herbert C Fooks publication (1953), wherein it is unclear specifically when the surname changed from Fookes to Fooks, and to which of the siblings the change can be attributed as more than one is recorded as 'Fooks' and some retained 'Fookes' for more later generations than others.

To recap - The initial William Fookes (Fooks) family born and lived in Worcester County, Maryland. The children of William above were also born in Worcester County but some moved to Marshall County, Kentucky.

Does this help? Does the combination 'Maryland - Kentucky' add any weight to a possible connection with Layfield's?

Anyone wishing to receive further details can contact me at rayfowke@clear.net.nz I will be happy to provide more extensive data in exchange for any additional data you may have.

To all researhing Fowke/Fooks/Layfield, I am very interested in your discussion, as I am doing both lines and have information from family members, on the Fooks side, but at this time am in upstate Penna. for an estate settlement, from my wifes side of the family. This is also one of an old family who has passed the property down generations, and is this complicated? My memory is not so good any more, but I will answer any questons that I can, and when I get home will get more info. Also would like to meet with some other Fooks/Layfield researchers in the Eastern Shore area. Other names from that area that I am working on, Causey,Jenkins,Knotts,Noble,Roach,Seymour, and many others. Please keep me in the loop on anything going on.fdsfjr@aol.com

The Fooks were in Dorchester County as were the Stapleforts. Dorchester County was founded in 1669 and its first Sheriff was Raymond Staplefort. The Dorchester Fooks/Fowlkes most likely came from Accomack VA. I am most interested in your earliest research. I may be able to connect you with Dorchester County.

I, as I said have Fooks and Stapleforts in my line. Where are the folks you are referencing located. I am in Dorchester Co. Maryland and volunteer in records at the local historical society. Being the Fooks are in my line I would like to make as a complete record as I can.

I have Fooks and Layfield connections in my Tree data although the connections are somewhat distant. However, the data that I have is as follows-:
Annie V. Fooks, b.17 Jun 1877, d.7 Dec 1940, m.Oswald Layfield (b.1877) on 31 Aug 1898. Children are George N Layfield, b.1900, Ronald O Layfield, b.1903, Russell F Layfield, b.1907.
Can this data be connected in any way to the George W Fooks and Mary W Layfield marriage being sought? If so I have a direct line back to 1403 in Staffordshire, England (FOWKE), and would like to extend my knowledge of other Fooks lines that may be connected.

Hi Heather

Saw your posting recently on Ancestry.

We still have your letter from 1992 about Barjew Pitcher, so we’ve had another look at our Berjew database for you.

There is a Sarah Berjew, christened in 1697 in Bristol St Augustine who is a direct descendant of Rev Richard Berjew of Litton Cheney, Dorset.

If you have read any Jane Austen novels you will know that lots of matchmaking went on within the middle classes. This Sarah had a cousin Rev John Berjew who was curate at Sherborne, and who married Mary Allambridge whose family were based in Sherborne and Yetminster. He could have acted as intermediary.

Our suggestions are:-

1.	This Sarah Berjew married Robert Pitcher
2.	John Berjew was a close friend of Robert Pitcher and the child was named after him

We note you have alternative surnames for Robert Pitcher’s wife Sarah. How strong is the evidence ?

Sarah Berjew’s parents died while she was a teenager, and she would probably have lived with her brother Thomas, who was an apothecary. This means she is likely to have married in Bristol.

It is a pity that Melbury registers have not all been transcribed yet. As some of the answers may lie there.

Good Luck

Don & Gerry Edwards
3 Hughes Stanton Way
Manningtree
Essex UK
CO11 2HQ
Dear Hedley

I was reading and deleting old emails and your email from 2004 popped up. It was actually sent to my work connection, then forwarded on to me.

I am interested in Berjew Pitcher of Melbury Osmond Dorset, but the connection between Pitcher and Berjew is unclear.
I did some research quite some time ago and found that a in the 1600’s a BERJEW and his three sons arrived in England and were called “Aliens”, ie from another country. His ancestry is unknown to me.

My original Berjew Pitcher was born c.1719 (son of Robert Pitcher and Sarah COLLINS or SHORT). Barjew married Elizabeth ? and died 1801. His son John PITCHER had a son Berjew PITCHER born 1798 in Melbury Osmond. He married Hannah MINTERN in Yetminster then emigrated to the US. That branch of the PITCHER family has remained in South Carolina for many generations.

I would like to reconnect with you with a view to updating the family tree. I am retired and can devote time to research.

Best wishes
Heather Hardwick
Yes I think so too; she was born 1847 and she was christened 10/10/ 1847 both times as Sarah Ann but family had a daughter Sarah b 1836 who must have died before 1847. I think our Anne had been named in honour of her sister but referred to as Annie.

are you related to this line? My husband is descended from Edward Fooks through Annie & Edward Smith.
I'm still trying to locate their emigration to Oz.
regards, Carole

b 1806 in Kingston nr Corfe Castle and an Innkeeper by trade. Married Harriet Polden (Polder or Polde), and had 7 Children (inc my great great grandmother, Edith). Died 1871.

Siblings of George I am informed by others here were
Rachel, James, Henry, Sophia, John, William, Joseph, Eliza, & Ellen.

All of which is a way of making sure you have got the right Fooks family. I have managed to decipher the census records from 1841 up to 1871. Numerous transcription errors, but it' direct family so you keep going. Anyone who has not connected yet - feel free to have a look.

Hi,
Don't know if you've progressed this but Sophia and James Fooks were both children of John Fooks (East Lulworth) and Hannah (nee Roberts) from Blandford. Hannah died in 1855 and then John married Elizabeth leastways I assume they married as I haven't been able to find the marriage.

Mike

My email address is colbykalebsnanna@hotmail.com OR Nanette57@shaw.ca
I think there is too much to talk about here.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
