Re: Caspard Michael Foos, Caspar Michael Foos II, III, & IV

Caspar Michael III & Mary Eva Toepp
The Foos family came mainly from a city in Alsace-Lorraine named Oberseebach. This city lies in the point of Alsace-Lorraine, along the Rhine River where it juts out into Germany.
Caspar and Mary Eva arrived in America on July 4, 1842 from Germany and brought their family of seven sons and two daughters: Caspar IV, Anthony, Joseph, John, Martin, Louis Angelus, William, Mary Foos Kleinhanz, and Eva Foos Murra.
Caspar was a carpenter by trade, but after coming to America he engaged in farming in the state of New York, locating about three miles from Rochester. The family of Mrs Anthony (Weiland)Foos owned the property now occupied by the Kodak Co. Complex.
When his family arrived in America they were much better off than some of the other arrivals. They possessed 1/2 bushel of silver and because of this they were able to purchase the farm. In later years the youngest son William occupied this farm.
In 1855 three of the sons, Casper IV, Anthony, and John A. moved to Sandusky County and settled in Jackson Township, Ohio. About 1870 another brother Joseph moved to Sandusky County for a short time and then moved to Edgerton, Williams County, OH.
Caspar died at the age of 75. Mary Eva died at 88. They are both buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Gates, Monroe County, New York.

I am part of the family line listed. My great grandfather was Jacob David Tautfest, but via his second wife, Anna Dorthea Seelke. I am eager to learn more well documented history of this group of Tautfests and the specifics on their journey from Russia. I have a bit of info, but am a lightweight compared to a lot of the folks on this site.

Evie,

My search for my friend's family has found it's way back to Chalkley Batt (son John, to Theodore, to Theodore, to Patrick). You're the only person I can find who has knowledge of him (although, I've seen the 1850 and 1860 Census data). Also, my friends made contact with Leopold in Ireland when they were over there.

I don't know if you're aware that "Chalkley" is a surname of English derivation. You know the Batt family likes to make use of maiden names, and have kept some traditional family names in circulation for generations - right? For example, I've seen many Batts with the middle name "Knight" - and so many with the name "Theodore Knight Batt" I can't count. (Of course, I've also seen "John Poole Batt" used more than once.) As I'm sure you're aware - Chalkley has a son named Theodore and one named John.

I mention this, because it may help make connections. A Batt probably married a "Chalkley" at one point (and a "Knight" and a "Poole"). One specific thing I noted, in the 1860 Census, I noted a John Batt living in the same Ward as Chalkley Sr., and he was perhaps 2 years older. This John was listed as born in New Jersey, while Chalkley was listed as born in Pennsylvania (but, Chalkley did name one of his sons John). This is something to consider - a brother perhaps? Also, I noted an elder George Batt. I'm going to look into this further, to see if I can make any obvious connections this way and follow up.

Judy,
My great-great grandmother is Sophia Foos. She is buried in the Ebenfeld cemetery in Okeene, Oklahoma. My great-grandfather is Andreas Tautfest, also buried in Ebenfeld. They came to Oklahoma Territory in 1892 for one of the landruns when the Cheyenne-Araphaho reservation was opened for white settlement. Andreas Tautfest and Sophia Foos Tautfest each acquired a quarter section of land (160 acres) in the land run. However, Sophia Foos Tautfest was unable to meet the requirements to retain her quarter section. Andreas's quarter section remained in the family, eventually passed to Frederick (Bud) Tautfest, the youngest son. He passed away in 1959 in Germany, afer marrying a German girl, Marianne. Marianne sold the land. It still has a standing abandoned house built by Andreas.

Andreas's daughter, Elizabeth, is my grandmother. She married Charles Walter McClung on April 12, 1912, in Okeene, OK. Their home is still standing but unoccupied. Their quarter section of land now belongs to me and my two brothers.

My mother is Marcella Ann McClung and is now deceased.

The Catherine Batt I am searching for may have had a maiden name of McCall. Her dowry was £1000 in 1771 in Philadelphia. Her husband Major Thomas Batt ran a wine business. He relieved the siege of Fort cumberland 1776 thereby keeping Nova Scotia for the British.
On another tack I met a US man in the 80's who said his father was a Theodore Batt from Ireland. His mother claimed he returned to Ireland in the 1920's and was shot by the British. He had a sister still living in the States. Rgds

Greetings to you too,my husbands grandparents-on his mothers side were from Roscommon.I hope I spelled it correctly. Ireland is a beautiful place.Back to `Batt` I don`t know much at all, nothing in the family Bible, but I will look further. I`m caught up with all four sides & it takes forever-but very enjoyable, don`t you think? I`ll get back to you if I find anything.Have fun,Evelyn

Hi Larry,

I just received a message from Marina in Russia, and when I checked the previous message it was an old one of yours. Did I ever tell you that I have a wonderful picture of my Mary Elizabeth Foos' family that must have been taken just before they left Russia. Could have been after, but she is quite young, and they look to be a very well put together bunch. All my stuff is packed away for a remodel right now, but you should have a copy of this picture. Lydia passed away last spring - an adventurer to the end. I don't think you and I have yet figured out just where the connection is, but I do remember Susie (Lydia) takling about going somewhere to visit her cousin, and she talked about a Fred. (Toppinish maybe?) Too bad I'm so disorganized - we could probably close this gap with a little perseverance! Take Care, Midge

Dear Midge,

To my regret I have not found Your Mary Elizabeth Foos in my database. I am very sad, but I would like to add Your information to Foos family tree. But in spite of this I need the full information about the descendants of Mary Elizabeth Foos . I will keep it, but I continue my search. I have information many Foos in Russia ( and theirs ancestors in Germany right up to 1660). They all are descendants of one Foos male who moved from Germany to Dietel. They all are relatives. But my work is not finished. It may work and search later. And I hope, we'll search together . Do You have contact to other Foos in USA and other Foos researchers? There are many Foos in Russia. I search they all to obtain the necessary information. Many Foos moved to Germany from Russia in the 10-15 later years.

I am looking forward to your reply.
Marina from Vladikavkaz,
North Osetia
mplijewa@mail.ru
P.S.
Hi Marina,
My husband's grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Foos who came from Dietel with her family. I don't remember the year off the top of my head, but she was was married to Christian Batt. They were in the German settlement in Kansas for a while, and then I believe went through Windsor, CO. There is some debate in the family as to the birthplace of their oldest child, Lydia. I show she was born in Winsor (1911?)
They settled in Missoula Montana where she raised her family alone after Christian died at age 34? as the result of an accident. SHe was a widow with five young children, but Victor Harold, (ny husband's father) was 14 and a good hunter. During the depression her kitchen was always open to a hungry person, and when she passed away half of Missoula attended the services. I believe I have the name of Christian's parents, but cannot access them right now. (Everything packed up for a remodel.)
Would be interested in any thing you might have to share. Thanks so much, Midge
