Hi: I am descended from:
John1 Sikes
Pasquotank County, North Carolina 6 Jul 1757 - Will of John Sikes. Wife Rachel the area of my dwelling plantation with wood (?) land (?) to support the plantation during her natural life and after her natural live give to son James Sikes lying on the west side of the North River, Pukcosen (Pasquotank?) consisting of 125 acres of land lying on Pukcosen? Daughter Elizabeth all the rest of my land being 100 acres lying ? of the aforesaid land. Use of bay horse and the two old cows and other miscellaneous items to wife Rachel. Granddaughter Judith Sikes one young cow to be delivered to her on the day of her marriage or at the age of sixteen years. Other items to two younger daughters, Rachel and Mary Sikes to be equally divided. Executor, wife Rachel. Signed by John Sikes. Witnesses: James Eaves, William Bray, John Bray

Item I give and bequeath to my well beloved daughter Rachel Sikes a peace of land lying between Jacob Forbes' line and the main swamp containing 30 acres…
Item I give and bequeath to my well beloved wife Mary Sikes, during her widowhood, my whole tract of land also my whole estate of what kind soever during her widowhood. Signed James Sikes. Witness: Henry Forbes, John Jones, Achel? Gregory. Executor: "my loving friend Bailey Forbes Junr.". Copy of Original will with beautiful penmanship and copy of the will by a clerk done in 1875.

Item 1st I leave unto my dearly beloved wife Mary Sikes the use of my house home and plantation wheron I now liv with all the appurtances there unto belonging with all my negroes and all the other moveable property belonging on my plantation with all my stock of every kind except such legacies as are particularly left in the following items in the will to her during her natural life or widowhood and if in case she should marry after my decease I then leave her the use of my plantation with the house and (?) there unto belonging and the use of my negro Baason and the one fourth part of all my moveable property and stock of every kind during her natural life
Item 2nd I leave unto my son John Sikes the Eastward part of my land where he now lives..beginning …on north side of road oppisit the lane between him and myself….to contain all my swamp…
Item 3rd I leave unto my son Benjamin Sikes the westward part of my land whereon I now live ….and twenty five acres of juniper swamp lying on the North Side of the Road beginning in Abel Belangia patent…after my wife deceast …he shall pay…John Sikes the sum of eighty dollars if …John Sikes is living if not…to his heirs
Item 4th I leave unto my grandson Benjamin Sikes son of Thomas Sikes deceast fifty five acres of land lying in Gumneck where Thomas Sikes formerly lived …contaning the house and plantation with all the improvements …when he shall arrive to age of twenty one years if ….should die without an heir…to be equally divided…between Thomas Sikes living children…until (illegible) his mother Mary shall pass …provided she stays on the land…if she moves from the land said land to be rented out for the benefit of the said Benjamin Sawyer
Item 5th I leave unto my grandson Jesse Sikes son of Abel Sikes sixty one acres of land lying in Gumneck…when he reaches twenty one years
Item 6th I leave unto Epram Peary Owens son of Sary Owens wife of John Owens one negro girl by the name of Chain to serve my daughter Sally Owens during her naturil life and then to remain…the property…of Jesse Sikes
Item 7th I leave unto my other three daughters Hanner (she married 1st Josiah Sawyer and 2nd Robert Linton), Polly Basnight (m Lemuel Basnight), Pheby Cooper (m David Cooper) my negroes Abe & Boas & Vilet to be sould and money equal divided among them…
Item 8th In case my wife Mary Sikes should marry before named legacy then….all my remaining property to be sold except the negro girl Chain and the above named Hanner Linton, Polly Basnight, and Phebe Cooper to have and receive each the value of said negro girl Chain then the remaining balance to be equal divided among my four daughters Hanner Linton, Polly Basnight, Sally Owens, and Phebe Cooper
Item 9th But in case my wife Mary Sikes should died without marrying then…the four negros to be disposed as above named in Item 6 and 7 and the other moveable property of all kind to be sould and …amount thereof equally divided above….Hanner Linton, Polly Basnight, Sally Owens, Phebe Cooper……appoint my worthy son John Sikes and Abner Sawyer Esqr my true and lawful executors… Wit: Stephen Sawyer, Able Sawyer. Enforced in the House of Commons, referred to the Committee of Claims, which being read, were referred as by the House of Commons and returned…”
