And now we live in a time when so many don't know the difference between the possessive and the plural (when to use 's, s,es, etc) or between their and there, or to and too, flaunt and flout, repudiate and refudiate, and on and on.

The example you give does highlight the name spelling problem and alert us to the possibilities of variance.

I have a copy of court records where the husband's will has been probated, his name is written as "Forbis." The widow's name is written as "Forbes" - within the same court entry.

How much of that is due to the original writer and how much to the transcriber, we may never know. We just need to be alert and search all possible variant spellings.

We are so used to standardized name spellings, it's hard for us to understand what it was like before the standardization.

I am not sure but I might have some information for you. My mother is a Forbis and was born in Chicago, 1940. Her father Elred Washington Forbis, Sr. moved to Chicago from Guilford County, NC with his brother Johnny Forbis in the 1920s. My mother remembers that Johnny was married. Both elred and Johnny had VERY curly red hair and freckles. They had sisters named Jessie Beatrice and Hattie Ethel. There was a half brother (John) Lee Forbis who lived in Guilford County. Anything sound familiar? We don't know very much as Elred died in 1949 and my grandmother (who passed away in 2002) did not keep in contact with his family.

In the Forbis line I have researched, I find that Sarah is the D/O John Forbis & Martha E Brown/Born who married in Ft Jessup, Sabine, LA on 31 Dec 1948. Martha died in 1850 in Ft Jessup and I wonder if this was due to childbirth, as she was only 35 and Sarah was born in 1850? Sarah married Henry H Webb 30 Jan 1868 in Sabine Parish, LA. Henry & Sarah had the following children: Mary Casender, Aldie, Minnie, Edna, and Arthur Leo Webb. Mary Casender b. 11 Feb 1875 & d. 18 Mar 1875; Minnie b. 1888; Edna b. 1890; and Arthur Leo b. 24 Feb 1891 & d. 3 Aug 1913.
Hopes this helps.

I do a lot of ancestry and was happy to help Sharyl. I was very excited to come across your message board confirming info that I already had discovered.
Thanks again for sharing this information with us. Sharyl was so happy to discover this news. We both live in California. I was able to trace the family back to 1542 in England through familysearch.org.
Sincerely, Dianne Johnson Savage

I am his grandson. I can tell you the spelling of Rohr is correct, as I remember visiting my great-grandmother Rohr as a child. And I can remember once being at the Rohr house in DeWitt, Michigan. Marvel, his wife, is still alive and I may be able to get some information from her, but her memory is very spotty these days.

My grandpa had a sister, Margurite (spelling? mar-gur-EET) who is married to a gentleman named Stan, who authored a book about spiders or arachnids in general. I believe they live in Canada these days, I haven't seen or heard news of them since around the time my grandpa passed.

I specifically asked her, though, if his father's name was William (since that is the middle name for me and my dad - me being a Jr.) and that is the case.

I can't help you a whole lot going backwards, but Greg has a son, Robert. Rob married Jessica (not sure of her Maiden name) and they have a son, Norman (after her father or grandfather I believe).

My dad, Gary, has me and my sister Lauren. Neither of us has any children yet.

I am looking for information on the family of Robert Forbis. I know that he died in the Lansing, Michigan area in 2002, and that he was 77 years of age at the time of his death. He was married to Marvel Rohr (spelling may not be accurate), and they had two children, Greg and Gary Forbis).

I am wondering about other relatives of Robert Forbis, such as parents (I believe his father's name was William Forbis) and siblings. I know that he had relatives with the last name of Curr.

Forbis vs. Forbes as surname variants

Am not researching either Forbes or Forbis exactly, but as neighbors of my husband's ancestors in Richland and Ashland Counties, Ohio, they keep showing up and am corresponding with a descendant. So, I'm noticing that in some records, the surname is spelled Forbis, but later is Forbes. These are Scottish immigrants, and the surname there seems to be Forbes. So, folks might want to be alert to the possibility that immigrants to the US might have been heard, by someone else creating a record, as saying Forbis, when they themselves spelled their name as Forbes (assuming they were literate and the spelling was well established, neither of which I can say at this point. )
The records in question, showing this family as Forbis, are an 1853 tax record for Butler Twp, Richland Co, Ohio. Section 7 http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ohrichla/TaxMapCD/Butler18...
and the 1850 census for Clear Creek, Ashland Co, Ohio, both showing the name as Forbis. Later this will be standardized as Forbes, including on gravestones and later census, platt maps and tax records.

Isabella Forbis married Abner/Charles McClain/McLain

I was looking for anyone with any information on the Children of Isabella Forbis McClain & Abner/Charles McClain. I have to add the / Abner/Charles name because for years the only reference I had was a Charles McClain & he was my brick wall. It recently came to light that his name my have been Abner Charles or Charles Abner Mcclain.
Isabella Forbis married a Abner McClain March 5 1824 in Christian Co., KY. Then moved to Greene Co., MO by the late 1820's/early 1830's. Very very simialiar to my Charles & Isabella.

So I am trying to see if there is anyone in the Forbis/McClain lines that would have either of these people's childrens' info? So it would give me a more substantial fact to base my connection on.

I have Charles & Isabella's children as Racheal, William , Adison, Mary, Elizabeth,& Joseph. I have descendant lines for all these children except for Racheal, but I do have who she married.

If any of this sounds familiar please contact me, Thank you.
Moses Forbis ca1800 Green Co KY

My gg grandfather, James Shadrack Forbis (1832) was the s/o Moses Forbis and first wife, Malinda Erwin. I suspect they mar. bet. 1820-1823 I've not seen anything posted on other children of Moses but the 1830 census indicates 2 sons and 4 dau. bet. ages of 0-10 (prior to birth of JS) I've not found their marriage record. It doesn't appear that Malinda was d/o William Erwin but a good candidate for her father may be Robert Erwin as he was close by in 1830.

I have the 1843 mar. to Sarah "Sally" Atwell. It appears there were no children from that mar. By 1860 Moses was living with JS and his wife Cassandra Rachael Buchanan which suggests Sally died bet. 1850-1860; in 1870 Moses was living with one of the Atwell families. I have copies of wills for Moses' father, James Jr., and for James Shadrack Forbis.

I'd be grateful for any leads or info regarding these families.
