Please read through the other replies to this same post. Someone else has already requested the information, I posted it 19 April and its in one of the replies at this same Message Board for this same thread on James FORDE. I wrote all the information from the Naturalization Declaration, there is no other data to get. If you for some reason can't read the other replies, write to me at nutmeg@bartnet.net and I'll copy/paste the data from the 19 April, 09 post. They used to have my eMail address linked to my name here, but its gone now, they removed it in the name of 'security'a few years ago. Its a nice packet of information, that's why I thought it important to post the Scottish and Irish names from the Naturalizations film. MegG near Tulsa, OK

Re: Origin of Forde

Check out the below and the attachment (from some irish surname book on google books):

The Irish prefixes of Mac (son of) and O (grandson or descendant of) gave rise at an early date, to a set of fixed hereditary names in which the literal patronymic meaning was lost or obscured. These surnames originally signified membership of a clan, but with the passage of time, the clan system became less distinct, and surnames came to identify membership of what is called a 'sept' of people all living in the same locality, all bearing the same surname, but not necessarily descended from a common ancestor. Adoption of the name by people who did not otherwise have a surname and by their dependents was not uncommon. Later, nicknames were in some cases to supersede the original clan names. Families of this name in Ireland may descend from one of the Irish septs, who adopted this name as their surname, or from English settlers named Ford, a number of whom came to Ireland at various times and to various parts of the country since the 14th century. Of the native Irish families, whose descendants adopted the name Ford were the Mac Consnamha and Mac Giolla na Naomh septs in Connacht; in both cases Ford is a mistranslation of the original name.

As an Irish surname, Ford was an Anglicized version of three different Gaelic names: 'Mac Giolla Naomh', meaning 'son of the devotee of the saints' was a Sept that originated in southern Connemara. The name also comes from 'Mac Consnamha,' or 'son of the swimming hound.' This Connacht Sept has also been Anglicized as Kinneavy. Lastly, in Cork, the name was an Anglicized version of 'Fuar ain,' though more often it was Anglicized as Foran. The English name comes from the Old English word 'ford', which denotes a shallow section of a river, where it can be crossed. One large family came to County Meath from Devonshire in the 14th century where they became large land-holders.

Giollarnath - to me looks like Giolla ar n-áth.
The problem with having only one language is that it can be difficult to understand that there are concepts in other languages that do not translate directly into another language. so if you do not like the term servant or attendant - there might be some other concept that there is no word for in english. I would equate Giolla with Maol. Many surnames in Irish start with Maol or Giolla. Maol is a follower. It can also be part of a first name. An interesting one to give you some food for thought is Maolra. Many a small mind would get rattled by the idea of a Maolra from Killala. Killala is in Maigh Eo. A word in Breton, Spanish and Irish meaning a small salmon. Some people say it means a Yew in Gaelic. It might mean both. Áth is a ford in Irish which is a crossing in shallow water on a river where there is no bridge. I think it is interesting that fjords in Norway were also probably crossing points across water from one community to another.
Galway for the double!

Hello Fillmore:

I am curious to know if your Joseph Forde had a mother by the name of Annie and brothers Harvey Carvelos Forde who was born August 21, 1904, moved to New York and married Gertrude, returned to Barbados, died in Bridgetown and was buried in Christ Church in July 1979.

Hello There!

it's wonderful to connect with someone else researching the Forde's of Barbados. I have little to go by, however I will share what I have.

I'm researching the family of Fordes that left Barbados and lived in New York.

Regarding Joseph Forde, was this Jospeh Forde born in 1892? And did he leave Barbados for NY? Did he marry a Mary White around 1922? I married a descendent of this Forde family. This Joseph Forde was the brother of Harvey Carvelos Forde and also brother of Ira Forde.

Harvey Carvelos Forde was born in Barbados August 21, 1904, married first Gertrude Wilkinson in Brooklyn, NY in 1926, married second Ann Jacobs, returned to Barbados where he died in July 1979 in Bridgetown. He was buried in Christ Church, Barbados.

Harvey's mother was Ann Forde who was also born in Barbados, but I that's all I know. Have you any means for helping me with my Forde research?

Ann Forde (born in 1873 in Barbados)had other children who were born in Barbados: Ira Forde born and died in Barbados, and Joseph Forde. She came to Alabama in 1922, moved to New York by 1930. I've been unable to find any documents on her death. I was told she died in New York.

Please let me know if we connect.

Sincerely,
Brenda Louise

Forde / Ford County Fermanagh

Hi
I am looking for any information on the Forde family / families in County Fermanagh in the early 1800s. I am descended from a Thomas Forde (a journeyman tailor) who was born in County Fermanagh about 1811 [place not known] and was charged under the Whiteboy Act for assaulting the house of a John Baxter at Kilmore [with a group of about 50 other people] on Christmas Eve 1831, and was held at Down Prison before being sent to the colony of NSW as a convict. On his death certificate it has his father's name also as Thomas, occupation farmer.
Does this Thomas Forde sound like he might be connected to any other Fordes/Fords in County Fermanagh?
Helen

Just came across the note you posted 23 Dec 2003.

Let me take a shot. You are the son of Tom and Pat Forde who reside at 16 Ffordd Ffynnon, Prestatyn, Denbighshire. Wales LL19 8BA. Not bad for someone you've never met. The address information from your Uncle Phil with whom I have had some correspondence during the past year.

I am James Patrick Ford (Jim) the son of Martin and Ragna.

From what I have been able to pull together your grandfather was the 2nd of 5 boys born to Patrick and Annie (Riley) Forde. James (1898 - 1975), Thomas, Jack (1901 - 1902), William (1902 - !967), and Martin (1905 - 1980). Your grand father was born 30 July 1899 at 75 Great Jackson Street, South Manchester. According to the 1901 British census your great grand father (Patrick) was born in Ireland in 1865, I don't know where, but quite possibly Caltra and I will get to that. Your great great grand father, accoding to the marriage record og Patrick Forde and Annie Riley was named James and his occupation is stated to be Farmer.

I have a copy of an obituary provided to my father in March 1953 as follows:

MISS BRIGID FORDE, CALTRA
The death has taken place at her
residence, Kinclare, Caltra, of Miss
Brigid Force, a member of a
highly esteemed family. She was
sister of Messrs. Thomas and
Michael Forde, Kinclare; Mr. Andy
Forde. Creagh, Ballinasloe, and
Messrs. Simon and James Forde,
U.S.A.
Internment took place at the
family burial ground, Caltra, after
Solemn Requiem Mass."

My mother had made a notation that Brigid Forde was the sister of my grand father (Patrick Forde).

I am going to send a hard copy of the above to your Uncle Phil. So long for now.
Please contact me personally as requested, a friend told me about your query or it would have gone unanswered. Clik on my name as it appears in green letters and write to me if I can get any further information. My eMail address should be given when my name is clikked

The data on this Declaration of Intention says James Forde was 44y old, a Labourer fair complexion, 5'9" tall, auburn hair and blue eyes, no marks. Born Kiltimagh Ireland [county Mayo]and he entered the US from Queenland, Ireland into the port of New York on 5 May, 1911 aboard the LUSITANIA [it was torpedoed May 1915], he last resided in Kiltimagh. He was born on 7 June, 1866 and [in 1911] resided in St. Louis Missouri at 4384 Finney Avenue. I looked at Indexes online and find 1 James FORDE born in 1866 in county Mayo. Write back if you would like the Index information. With the Index data, you can get the full birth Registration, it will give exact place of birth and parent's names. Glad I finally got this post, its easy to find these on the filmed Naturalization papers. MegG

Hi there,
I am very interested in your post.. My name, as my dad's and my grandfathers name is/are James Forde... However, what really caught mny eye was the fact that both my dad and grandfather were originally from Kiltimagh, Mayo, Ireland. My dad and grandfather moved to Co. Meath in 1965 assisted by the 'land commission act' and stil reside there... I have followed my family tree back to my great grand father who I thought was named Eoin, however, I may have been mistaken or the James Forde(born 7/06/1866) may have been his brother...
I would love to hear more information if at all possible.
Looking forward to your reply,
Thank you,
James Forde

hello

i would suggest you do a search in rootsweb (just put forde in the search section) and see if any one else is researching forde like you - i would search for forde in limerick. i also am fairly new to this so i just search for anything that may be of relevance

then another way is to do a google search or any other search engine and put in forde family genealogy etc and see what comes up - sometimes it hit and miss. by the way who are your fordes
cheers
helen
aus

My ggrandfather was Ed Edward James) Ford, b. about 1859 probably in Ohio. In a marriage document he stated his parents came from Mitchelstown, County Cork, but he didn't give their names. He had a niece identified in his obituary ar Mrs. Howard Snyder. The earliest I find him in US census is 1880. He was a railroad engineer. Very difficult to trace. Is there a connection? Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks for any help.
I suspect that the Fordes you speak of are from Seaforde, Co. Down which itself is in the parish of Loughinisland. There is a Patrick Forde who lives in Seaforde and I'm sure he is a direct descendant from the Colonel you speak off. Patricks family were from a military background. He lives in a grand house in Seaforde Demense. This is a large estate with Deer, lakes and beautiful gardens!!

We don't have the spelling with an E at the end, but only about 200 people lived there at the time. The Tierney family came to America in 1853.

I am hoping to find some connection to my grandfather - Thomas Forde, b1873-5 in Roscommon, Ireland. He came over to England when he was young, on his own, and joined the army. I think the names Mary and Teresa could be connected to him.
He told my mam and uncle that he used to walk to work, in the mines at Roscommon. He only returned once, in uniform, and was chased by his dad. They were strict catholics.

Does anyone think he could be connected to their Ford/es?

Rosemary

Hi Cathy

I was wondering if you may have a samuel forde or thomas henry ford or james forde (one person who went by many names) in your tree. We also have a james henry forde who was the son of this man. james henry married elizabeth copeland in 1920 / 21 and came to australia. I am trying to find out what happened to samuel alias the other names. samuels children were all born in banbridge and i wondered if he could have been related to col william brownlow forde?

hope you can shed some light
kind regards
Helen
Melbourne
Australia

Forde Dublin

I have found out that my GG Grandparents William Forde & Alice (nee Lacy) originated from Dublin. Their daughter Mary Forde born 6/8/1867 was my G Grandmother, who then married my Grandfather John Kavanagh of Myshall Carlow in Clonegal church in Carlow June 1899. Does anyone have any connection - All i know is that Mary Forde was born/baptised in Kingstown District Dublin .. Anybody know where this is ?? I believe Mary had a sister Elizabeth who I think married Lyons in Calrow/Wexford

Hi my father's name was Joseph, he was the second last of sixteen children born to Samuel and Licorish Forde of St. Joseph and St. Andrew where all the fordes came from.

The Fordes arrive from St. Joseph and St. Andrew. My father died four years ago at the age of 82 from cancer.

They are several Joseph Fordes I don't think he is the one you are looking for though.

Fillmore maybe you are related to me. My aunt still lives in East Coast Road. She is about 97 now.
