Alice Williams Fordham

I am looking for information on Alice Williams Fordham. She married Luther Fielding Fordham in 1911. I have that from the Georgia Virtual Vault. She died around 1918 in the flu epidemic. Her children were Daniel (who I am also looking for), Gladys, Ernest and an baby that died around the same time as her.

My father remembers being told she was buried in a church cemetery north of Eastman. I have gotten burial lists from Dodge and Laurens County, there is nothing.

If anyone can help me it would be much appreciated.

Hi, can anyone help me locate when and on what vessel my ancestor travelled from England to Australia.

William Fordham b:12 Mar 1835 Middlesex England. His parents were James Fordham and Lucinda Spencer. He married his first wife Mary Ann Cummins in Australia in 1864 and then his second wife Nazarina Richardson in 1882. It stated on his marriage certificate that he had been in Victoria for 70 years so that would mean he came out to Australia in the early 1850's but I cannot pin point exactly when or what ship and did he come alone or with any of his siblings.

Hoping someone out there has this information or any information they may help me trace this ancestor.

I have traced my ancestry back to a John Fordham of Philadelphia, d. Oct 8, 1835, in Philadelphia. He had a son Richard, and two daughters Susan and Mary. John was a ship builder and left all his property to Mary. I think he married a Mary Hill in Philadelphia in 1785 in The Second Presbeterian Church Philadelphia. Richard, John's son was also a shipbuilder, He and his wife Mary(Unknown)had 9 children. Richard died in 1847, in Kensington, Philadelphia. The son's names were Richard, John, Benjamin, George, Adam, and William. William was my 2nd Great Grandfather.
I am seeking information from anyone who might know of this John Fordham, his parents and ancestry. I believe his father's name was Benjamin as the Census in 1790 and 1900 show a Benjamin Fordham living on Water Street, E. side, Philadelphia.

Answers refer to your questions:
(1)No, he was only 18 when he arrived by boat with his father, John and stepmother Margaret (Davies). Ref: passenger list of 1682 'The Jeffrey'. No, James and Richard were his last sons by his only marriage (to Lydia Jennett). Ref: Anne Arundel Co. MD Church Records (Church of England) and PA & MD records.
Benjamin's father John (a dealer in furs) died after his first year in America and his son Benjamin (a brewer) assisted his stepmother Margaret with matters of his father's estate (no record of him being lawyer). After marrying widow Lydia in Philadelphia he moved to Anapolis (MD & PA Quaker Rcds). Shortly after Lydia's death Benjamin took sick and in Annapolis in Aug 1716 wrote his will and moved the family back to Philadelphia to be near Lydia's sister's family (Sarah & James Parrock, Philadelphia Quakers). Benjamin died in Philadelphia where his Will was probate in April 1918.
(2)Yes, in Quaker and PA records. Benjamin's death is also recorded in Quaker records, as a friend of Quakers.
(3)James Fordham, a London upholsterer, was Benjamin's brother who lent him money to purchase land in Annapolis. Ref: MD & London Rcds.

Pam if you wish I can e-mail you a copy of our early Fordham ancestors in PA & MD, recently updated.
V.Fordham

I finally got a chance to look at the abstracts of Richard's probate records. Unfortunately there's nothing there that answers your question.
3 Sep 1764; Richard Fordham of city of Burlington, ship carpenter. Admr Wm Skeels. Fellowbondsman Samuel Allinson, both of said city. Wit. Levi Murrel. Liber 12: 16.
27 Aug 1764; Inventory by Wm Smith and Levi Murrel.
19 Oct 1764; Acct by Wm Skeeler (sic) as Admr.

I also looked at 3 vols. of "Early Church Records of Burlington County." I was unable to find any Fordham entries.

My library only had a few volumes related to Burlington. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

You are probably correct. I only have the names of Richard's first three children: Benjamin, James and Margaret - all of whom were baptized in Philadelphia (1735 to 1737). I have a notation that Richard's estate was probated in 1764 in Burlington Co, NJ. I live in a different NJ county, but I may be able to find abstracts of his probate records at our library. Let me know if you want me to take a look the next time I'm there.

Richard Fordham 1743 - 1823

Does anyone know how Richard Fordham (buried at St. Thomas Episcopal Church Cemetery, Berkeley County, SC) fits into the Fordham family? His daughter was named Susannah Poinsett Fordham, so this points towards the Richard Fordham who married Susannah Poinsett in 1733 Burlington, New Jersey. Thanks!

Re: Looking for Proof that Benjamin Fordham (1743-c1810) married Mary Blackshear

It was nice to open up the mail and find your reply. There are obviously few people out there who are interested in getting to the truth of the Fordham-Blackshear matter.

I haven't been working on this line lately, but I think I can address your comments and add a bit more to the discussion.

First, I believe the evidence forces us to conclude that the Susanna Fordham mentioned in Alex: Blackshear's will is the same person as the Susanna McKinsey in Agnes Blackshear's will (your item 3). After making several bequests to his sons, Alex: leaves the remainder of his household and kitchen furniture, as well as his stock (horses, cattle, etc) to be divided among his two daughters (Eleanor Bailey and Sarah Clifton) and his granddau Susanna Fordham (to whom he also gave a slave). This was not an insignificant gift, and the fact that it was equally divided elevates Susanna Fordham to the level of Alex:'s daughters. When Agnes wrote her will, she made a few specific bequests, but she primarily left everything to her two daughters (Elender Baley and Sarah Clifton) and to Susana McKinsey "according to my husband Alexander Blackshear Will." The wording confirms that the two Susannas are one and the same.

That leads to the next key issue: determining the age of this Susanna. We know from Bible records that Benjamin Fordham was born in 1743. And, if the Bible records are to be believed, his first 6 children were born between 1767 and 1776. The Bible page is available through the NC State Archives, but their copy does not include the names and dates for the rest of the children, including daughter Susanna. I have reviewed the document in person and it appears that the bottom portion of the page is missing. There are some books and online "trees" which give the names and birth dates for these children. Susanna Fordham, dau of Benjamin was supposedly born 31 March 1779.

If we accept that Benjamin's daughter was born in March 1779, then she was just age 14 when Agnes wrote her will in July 1793, calling her Susanna McKinsey. And, if the 1790 census is correct, she may have been married to Alexander McKinsey well before 1790.

I think it's reasonable to conclude that Susanna Fordham, granddau of Alexander and Agnes Blackshear, is NOT the daughter of Benjamin Fordham. It's also reasonable to conclude that Benjamin Fordham did NOT marry the granddaughter of Alexander Blackshear. As proved above, his granddaughter married Alexander McKinsey between 1785 and 1793. We are unfortunately left with Benjamin Fordham marrying a completely unknown woman.

One thing not mentioned in my original message was that Benjamin Fordham's father (Benjamin Sr. for purposes of this discussion) left significant property (a lot in the town of New Bern) to HIS granddaughter Susanna Fordham when he wrote his will in July 1777 (presumably before Benjamin Jr's daughter was even born). He also mentioned his sons Benjamin and Abraham, his daughter Martha Koonce, and his grandsons John Fordham (son of Benjamin Jr.) and Benjamin Fordham Koonce. The gift to granddaughter Susanna was more generous than the small gifts he left his two grandsons.

Having thought more about this, I'm going to hypothesize that Benjamin Fordham Sr. had a unidentified son who married the unidentified daughter of Alexander and Agnes Blackshear. This couple, both of whom were deceased by July 1777, had just one child, Susanna. Both of Susanna's grandfathers made sure that she was taken care of. I have not looked for McKinsey deeds in Craven County, but it would be interesting to see if a deed exists in which Alexander and Susanna McKinsey sell that lot in New Bern that belonged to Benjamin Fordham. I'm going to put this on my to-do list, but it may be awhile before it gets done.

I also descend through Benjamin Small and (perhaps) Elizabeth Fordham. This is another marriage I have not been able to prove. My line comes down through Lewis Small and Rebecca Westbrook.

Re: Looking for Proof that Benjamin Fordham (1743-c1810) married Mary Blackshear

Hi, Pam.
I totally agree with your assertions!
According to North Carolina tax records, Benjamin Fordham Sr. and Benjamin Fordham Jr. were the only Fordham's in Craven County, North Carolina in the 1760's. I'm wondering if:
1. Maybe Benjamin Fordham Jr. was married twice, first to a ?Blackshear, daughter of Alexander and Agnes Blackshear, having a daughter Susanna, and second to the wife with whom he fathered the rest of his children. If so, this Susanna would have been old enough to have married Alexander McKenzie (McKinsey) before 1793. As you know, Alexander McKenzie was listed in Jones County, NC in 1790, married with 3 young children. As best as I can tell, these McKenzie's were from Iredell County, NC then some went to Kentucky.

2. Perhaps there was another Fordham man who married the unnamed daughter of Alexander Blackshear. On the 1769 tax list for Dobbs County, NC (neighboring Craven), was James Foreham. Also, some researchers have said that Benjamin Fordham Sr. had a son named Abraham who died before 1784. I do not have information on either man.

3. Maybe the Susanna McKinsey mentioned in Agnes Blackshear's will was not the same person as Susanna Fordham?

4. Some researchers assert that Benjamin Fordham was married to a grand-daughter of Alexander Blackshear named Susanna. Two of his sons had daughters named Susanna: James Blackshear and Elias Stout Blackshear.
Benjamin Fordham did witness the will of Elijah Stout Blackshear in 1810 along with Elijah's son-in-law, Samuel Westbrook, signifying some sort of relationship. However, I do not believe Benjamin Fordham was a son-in-law of Elijah Stout Blackshear because before Elijah wrote his will, he deeded land to his sons-in-law, Samuel Westbrook, James Huggins, Elijah Koonce, and (maybe a son-in law) Edward Bryan. Why would he have omitted Benjamin Fordham in these bequests if he was indeed his son-in-law?
According to The Bench and Bar of Georgia: Memoirs and Sketches by Stephen Franks Miller published 1858, page 359, Susanna Blackshear, daughter of James Blackshear, married Edward Bryan and moved to Georgia. So if this is correct, that rules her out as a wife of Benjamin Fordham.

I will keep looking. Please let me know if you uncover further information!

I descend from Benjamin Fordman Jr.'s daughter Elizabeth who married Benjamin Small.

It seems to be an established "fact" that Benjamin Small (who died 1818 in Jones County, NC) was married to Elizabeth Fordham, daughter of Benjamin Fordham (who d. after 1810 in Jones County).

I have reviewed a wide variety of records and have been unable to find anything to prove this marriage - or even suggest a relationship between the two families.

Can anyone provide a source for this marriage?

I came across you query about Stephen Fordham and am desenced from daughter Tryphena and Jonathan Raynor through their daug. Tryphena who m. Joshua Secor. Do you have more info on Stephen. All I have is that he was b. c1746 (which is likely wrong) with parents as Alexander Fordham and Elizabeth Woodruff...and m. 3 Dec 1768 Lydia Penny with no info on her. So ancestry is back from Alexander to Joseph K. to Joseph to Rev. Robert Fordham in Southampton, NY, and on back to Phillip and William in Hertsfordshire. Hope you can fill in some blanks and I'm of course glad to share what I have. Did not have Stephen as d. 1822 in Greene Co. PA but do have Jonathan Raynor d. in Greene Co. on same date you have for Stephen...20 Mar. 1822!

wlongman@yahoo.com

I am especially interested in his son Charles (born c 1853) and his grandson Charles (who called himself Herbert)born c1879 in North London.
Henry was a petty criminal who served plenty of time in prison and had a wife called Amelia Stringer (married 1857, Hartismere)
