I was not able to reach you by your email address.

I found Abraham/Abram Fordyce/Foredice in 4 different census as having been born in KY, IN, OH, and NJ.

There is a family history on Ancestry that shows his mother as Mary Force (but no father listed). If this is true, his father would have been James Fordyce and both were from NJ. I believe that James and Mary were already in Ohio before 1811. If Abraham is their son, he would have been born in Ohio.

Mary Force's brother John was my gggrandfather. I have a little Force information if you're interested.

Pat Hovell
Let me know if you are interested in that information.

How/where did you find that Patience Fordice married John Wimer/Wymer?

Jeff Carr
Palmyra, VA

Fordyce/Twist - Fayette & Allegheny Counties PA

Good Morning,
I am researching the family of a wife a great uncle of mine. Catherine Fordyce married John Oliver Twist (1887-1947) in 1910.

I am interested in the parents and siblings of Catherine. Also confirmation on where she is buried. John is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Uniontown. Catherine's name is on the stone but there is no death date.

In 1947 they were living in Lynnwood, PA when John committed suicide. They also had lived in Elizabeth PA.

They had 2 children that I know of Oliver S and Marie Victoria I believe.

Thank you in advance.

My father was our family history researcher - Richard Eugene White jr... he passed away in 1991. I have tried to begin where he left off. His mother is Lola Fordyce so that is one of the many lines I am searching for clues... We go from William Henry Fordyce to Robert Fordice, then to Elijah Fordice to Stanton Fordice ,and then John and John and then to James Fordice who was married to Sarah Lewis ... I have several bits and pieces that James was the one who came to America but I have no proof... anyone know?

Fordyce from Whitburn, West Lothian, Scotland

Can anyone help me with a family that appear to have gone missing between 1875 and 1881.

In the 1871 Census for Whitburn in West Lothian I have found James Fordyce (38) and his wife Janet (34) (m/s Galloway) and four children Peter (8), James (5), John (2) and Robert (8 months). They had two further children, William (born 1872) and Thomas (born 1875).

However, I am unable to find them in the 1881 and 1891 census. There is a James Fordyce age 47 and 57 in 1881 and 1891respectively who I think is the father, but there is no sign of Janet or any of the children. I can find no record of their deaths so I assume that they emmigrated.

Does anyone have information on what happened to them?

Gene, do you know who John Brister's parents were? I cannot connect him to the Greene County Brister's. There is a story in my family that Brister is a corrupted form of Brewster out of New England. I am a direct descendant of John through his son James Brister who married Margaret Dailey, Didn't I see someplace that you are working on a book on the family? Has it been published?
Thanks Gene, I also show John Brister being born in Greene County, PA. Do let me know when you publish your De'ath/ Dearth book. I have seen the Dearth manuscript, and it has many errors but is a good resource anyway. This is the Wm. H, Dearth research, and there is a copy at the Mellon Library in Pittsburgh. I have never been able to ascertain where his original research went. John's wife Nancy Dearth was a sister of Sarah "Sally" possibly married 1st Elijah Stephen and 2nd a Weir and then was the 2nd wife of my ancestor William Dement. John
THE FREEPORT PRESS

Pub. Thurs.,Oct. 5, 1882
Harrison County, OH

COL. S. W. FORDYCE, formerly of this county, now of Hot Springs, Arkansas, got into trouble with an editor at the latter place which culminated on Friday in a bloody tragedy.

The dispatches state that on Friday, Colonel S. W. Fordyce and D. C. Rugg, proprietors of the Arlington Hotel, were going up the street and met Charles Mathews.

Fordyce accosted Mathews and asked ; " Why in addition to pursuing him for years, he reflected on his family during his absence." having gone to Mamouth Cave to hatch some scheme. The persons going being Mrs. Fordyce, Colonel and Mrs. Rugg and famlies.

To the inquiry of Fordyce no reply was made by Mathews, except by drawing a pistol and shooting at him, without effect, and Fordcye then struck Mathews several times with a stick. The latter retreated, firing his pistol, a ball of which struck Rugg, who was just behind Fordyce, taking effect in his thigh and passing up into the scrotum.

Rugg then drew his pistol and commenced firing at Mathews, who retreated into the street and received a ball in the left temple, one through the heart and another in the left wrist. He fell dead in the middle of the street, bleeding profusely.

Great consternation and excitment prevailed and both Rugg and Fordyce were arrested.

******************

Courtesy post - not related

Ok, I found some stuff of my grandmother's about Samuel Fordyce. She says he was the son of John Fordyce, who was a tobacco merchant. Grandma's writing is hard to read but it says something about a Thousand Hogsheads (???) Tobacco (maybe a brand) and John's tobacco warehouse was burned by "Morgan's Raiders." Her notes say something about Sam being a brave union soldier. He led raids in Kentucky and Tennessee. Morgan's Raider's men quote was "We are only following Fordyce's Plan." (Not sure what any of this is about!!!) She wrote he was wounded when he was a first Lt. This info was taken from some book she read on p. 278 called "History of !st Ohio Volunteer Cavalry." I even have a phot of him she copied from the book. He had a mustache and long, white beard. Hope this helps somebody!

Hi Jeannie,

I am a distant relative. My maiden name was Ross. My gr gr grandfather was Jacob Ross that married Anna Dixon. I am working a family tree for my family.

I am also related to the Taylor/Fordice/Fordyce/Dearth families.

In your message you stated that Abigail and Helen Fordyce are 1/2 sisters. I found in Noble Co. history the mention of another sister, Mary Deurth (Dearth?). According to the info all had been married at one time or another to Cornelius Taylor Rathbone.

Have you been able to prove or disprove this info? Do you have mention of a Mary Jane Dearth/Fordyce 1844-1871 in your research?

Your help would be appreciated.

Hi Edgar,

I just found the 1850 Census (Homer, OH - Morgan Co). The following people are shown on the census.

1. Lebbeus Fordyce, Sr - Age 52 - Farmer - Born in PA.
2. Sarah Fordyce - (daughter-in-law) - Age 20 - Born in OH.
3. Abigail Dearth - Age 14 - Born in OH.
4. Mary Fordyce - Age 9 - Born in OH.
5. Samuel Fordyce - Age 3 months - Born in OH.
6. Jane Dearth - Age 6 - Born in OH.
7. Issac Dearth - Age 24 - Farmer - Born in OH.

It looks like Sarah (nee - Dearth), Abigail, Jane (nee - Mary Jane) and Issac might all be related. Abigail has been listed previously as a Fordyce.

This differs from the 1860 census mentioned in the previous e-mail.

Have you found anything more on the Dearth families.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Have a great week!

Could anyone give me any information on Franklin VanMeter. He lived with Henry and Rachel Fordyce in both the 1860 and 1870 census. I would like to know how he came to live with them, what the connection was. Franklin was my great-great-great grandfather.

Thanks.

I haven't figured that out yet ... I keep thinking they've got to be related somehow. Any thoughts?
