Hello Gill,

Sorry to jump into this thread but I also am researching the Forey family on behalf of my wife Kaye (nee Forey). Her great, great grandfather was James Forey 1794 - 1869 (wife: Eliza Forey) of Walton-on-Thames or thereabouts.
I'm trying to find any information at all about Foreys but particularly the children of James and Eliza, besides Edward (or Edwin James?) who left England and emigrated to Tasmania in May 1884.
hallo,

It is indeed a rarity. My mother was a Forey and always said that our family was the only one with that spelling as it was anglesised.

The family can be traced back to Thursley, Surrey to the south of the M25. Phillippe Foore Married Joan Denier on 25th Sept 1615. From then the family name gradually becomes as we see it today. They are I think Hugenots who escaped form France after 1610.

My Grandfather was William Forey born 10th August 1864. I will get my son to help me scan information for you.

Gill Francis
An early genealogy of the Fohrer/Forrer family identified him as the wrong John and I can't seem to tie my line to any of the early immigrants. In limbo

Hi Rod, Do you know of any brothers or sisters for Wild John? So far we have connected with Abraham Forry as Daniel Forrys (1771)Dad, and it says he is from either Switzerland or Holland?? Abraham was a Capt. in the Revolutionary War, and he naturalized in the US in 1765. But the buck stops there. So I trying to find out if he came over with Wild John were they brothers?? or nothing a all??
Thanks for getting back so soon.
I do notice that everyone is related to Wild John, he is in everyones tree, Wow busy guy. My email is cjforry@gmail.com. Chrissy Forry

Interesting that no one has answered this yet. My information which I rely upon two books (Furry,Forry,Forrer Genealogy by Jane Osolin and the Decendants of John Forry by Alvan Forry) suggest that the father was Rudolph Forry (Forrer). Of course the information is so confusing because of many other conflicting resources, but I think the Rudolph possibility is the best documented. Hope to see others who have opinions as well.
Re: John Furry of Hempfield (died 1753) and Christian Forrer of Conestoga (died 1786) were brothers.

The really incredible aspect of my research was not due to me but was the idea by Linda Hansen that a comparison of signatures might determine if the two Christians, Furry and Forrer, were the same person. That had never occurred to me and I had been mulling over the problem for several years. Her contribution was the key to proving they were the same person, without which I would never have realized what type of proof I should be looking for.

I was well aware that Richard Warren Davis, in his book, had “suggested” that the 1786 Christian Forrer of Conestoga might be the brother of the 1753 Johannes Forrer of Hempfield, but that was never more than a “suggestion”. Davis had never actually said that they were in fact brothers or that he had uncovered any evidence to that effect. Further, Davis had never said that they were in fact the sons of Johannes Forrer b.c.1681 or that he had uncovered any evidence to that effect.

Davis has to be read with a critical eye because he continually places honest qualifications or conditions on his statements which to do him justice should not be ignored.
On his page 137 Davis introduces the possible father as:
“4.[?] Johannes Forrer, b.c.1681.”
On his page 137 Davis also introduces the possible elder son as:
“41.[?] Johannes Forrer, b.c.1705.”
On his page 139 Davis introduces the possible younger son as:
“42.[?] Christian Forrer,b.c.1708.”

The numbering system 4, 41, 42 certainly indicates a parent, sibling, sibling relationship, but what does [?] mean. On page 3 Davis defines it as: “[?] = when a relationship is questionable.” Additionally, on page 137, when indicating JF had an executor “Christian Furrey” (sp.?) Davis only said “probably his brother”. On page 137 Davis states that JF, b.c.1681, only “may be” the father of Christian. He is clearly qualifying his remarks. Apparently he did not have access to the JF will language about a brother Christian or any access to actual signatures of Christian.

Thus, Davis is honestly admitting that he is only making educated guesses about this potential family. He has no supporting documentation or other evidence to support the relationship. But, this should be explained when referring to a statement by Davis so as to not give the impression that the statement is established fact by Davis. Nevertheless, Davis really was a master at the educated guess that turned out to be accurate, wasn’t he.

The question whether the brothers Johannes and Christian were the sons of Johannes Forrer b.c.1781 remains open.

Don Forrer.

John Furry of Hempfield (died 1753) and Christian Forrer of Conestoga (died 1786) were brothers.

The online will abstracts for Lancaster County PA for 1729-1817 include an abstract for a testator John Furry of Hempfield Twp. who died in 1753 and appointed two executors Christian Furry and Abraham Myer. Also included is an abstract for a testator Christian Forrer of Conestoga Twp. who died in 1786. This Christian Forrer was my 4xgreat grandfather.

These abstracts raise the questions: 1. was the 1753 testator John Furry a relative of his executor Christian Furry and 2. was the 1753 executor Christian Furry the same person as the 1786 testator Christian Forrer.

The Records and Archives Services department of the Court of Common Pleas, in downtown Lancaster city at the “court annex” immediately south of the main court building, maintains bound “will books” which contain “copies” of wills from the 1700’s. These are not the actual original wills signed by the testators but are only full text “copies”, probably made by unknown court personnel.

The will book citation for John Furry is 1753, Book B, Vol. 2, page 9, which contains a full will copy which is a typewritten version, obviously of modern vintage. The signed date is 26 April 1753 and the proved date is 30 June 1753 so he died some time between those dates.

The significant portion for my purposes is the executor appointment statement as follows:
“my only and Sole Executors My Trusted and Beloved Brothers Christian Furry, Abraham Myer and Friend Henry Strikler”. So, John Furry and Christian Furry were in fact family brothers.

The 1753 John Furry will copy also mentions: “Wife Marry”(sp.?); “My Father Christian Myer”; “Son John Furry”; “son David or Daniel”; “son Jacob Furry”; “son Abraham Furry”; and “son Henry Furry”. Obviously AM & CM were in-laws.

The will book citation for Christian Forrer is 1786, Book Y, Vol.2, page152 which contains a full will copy which is handwritten in modern cursive, obviously of current vintage. The signed date is 2 February 1786 and the proved date is 23 February 1786 so he died sometime between those dates. It turns out that this modern cursive copy is an English translation of the original Christian Forrer will which was written in cursive German. There is no mention in the 1786 Christian Forrer will of any person in the John Furry family to link 1786 CF to 1753 JF.

The 1786 Christian Forrer will copy mentions: “my loving wife Maria”; “my son Jacob”; “my two Daughters Veronica Brenneman and Anne Graff”; “her husband Issac Brenneman”; “my son Christian”; “my son John’s land”; and “my Two Friends Henry Good and John Burkholder my executors”.

At the court annex, from a section separate from the will books, I located a manila folder for the 1786 German language will of Christian Forrer. The folder contained a business size envelope with badly deteriorated shreds of paper which the clerk assured me was the original will but did not want me to remove. The folder also had a Xerox style copy of the assembled shreds providing a readable will copy except for many, many holes. The signature of Christian Forrer was reasonably legible except for the “or” of Forrer which was missing due to a hole.

At the Lancaster County Historical Society, about four miles west of the court annex, I located a 1756 account by the executors of the 1753 John Furry will listing debts due by the deceased and signed by his three executors. The research librarian there indicated that Christian’s signature was a unique combination of German and English cursive letters. The signature surname clearly was not Furry but was Forrer. Comparing this 1756 executor account signature of Christian Forrer with the 1786 German language will signature of Christian Forrer shows enough similarity to convince me that the same person signed both documents 30 years apart.

Notes:
Will abstracts at: www.usgwarchives.org/pa/lancaster/wills.htm

Records and Archives Services: www.co.lancaster.pa.us ; select Court of Common Pleas; select Court Related; select Records and Archives; select Archives.

LCHS: www.lancasterhistory.org

Don Forrer.

The late Phillip and Beatrice Forey were my Grandparents, they had 4 children Fred,David,Sophia and my mother Phyllis.Sadly all 4 have passed away.Freds son still lives in the Garw valley and as far as know is the only Forey there.David moved to Doncaster when I was a child and had a number of children so there is definately a branch of the family there.Obviously Sophia and my mother Phyllis' surnames changed after marriage,my brother my sister and myself still live in the area,so does 1 of Sophias children with the other 2 living in England and Scotland. My mothers family hailed from Aberdare and I'm sure there are still Foreys there

Did you ever find out about Forey in Staines. Because my wife Sian was a Forey prior to becoming a Caddell. Her Forey side of the family was from Bedfont which is very close to Staines. Sian's grandfather was Edward (married Freda) who would I believe had a brother who died at the battle of Monte Casino in WWII. If you think there is a link I can ask Sian's Dad (Anthony) or Uncle (Brian) to find out if you are related.
