Hi, this sounds like my grandmother agnes bridget faulkner. She lived in Swinford, Ireland. Her mothers name was Mary Kelly and her father Thomas Forkin. She was the baby of twelve children. Her mother and father had a farm where they raised sheep. My great grandmother made butter and sold it in town. My grandmother Agnes had a brother Ned who worked in the coal mines in England. He had black lung so he was sick and stayed home and played with my grandmother. She came over here around the early 1900s with a sister Julia (I believe) She went to NY to live with relatives. Worked as a maid and then met my grandfather Charles Spalty a swiss who was a chaufeur for the family. They married and had 4 children. Catherine, James, Julia and my mother Margaret. My name is Patricia Hart Russell and my sister Colleen Wiele. Please e-mail me if you have any info as I am trying to retreive my families history. Thank you. What is your name?

Forkan Surname Origins

Hello:

My current room-mate is Michael Forkan, whose father is John James Forkan of Charlestown, Co. Mayo, Ireland. We have been doing research and it looks like the Forkan name came to Ireland via a French-Jewish connection (possibly a merchant?). The name Forkan appears in both the Quran and the Torah, in fact Forkan (Al Forkan or Al Furqan) is the 25th book of the Quran and is Arabic for "Criterion" or possibly "a critic, i.e. 'a jew'. The lists of Forkan's (Forkins) extends into the early 19th century in Mayo in baptismal registries. I have found the name Forkan (spelled also as Fo:rken) in a roster of Jews taken by the Bishop of Prague in the 16th century. Forkan has also turned up in French registries, perhaps Jews converted to Catholicism then moved to Ireland with the French General Humber (spelling?) who was called to Hibernia to help quell Irish peasents.....

And the search goes on.

Joe
