I believe my Furmans/Formans were from the Ukraine/Rumania region (Beltsi, Bessarabia & Mogilev Pedolsk). My father Nathan immigrated in 1910, landing in Baltimore, then going to Philadelphia with his mother Ida, sister Elizabeth, and brother Max. At this time, I do not see a connection. Have you had a male descendent of the Formans do a DNA test?
Forman family from Pinsk to US

Searching for Forman descendants or ancesters from family in Pinsk (once Russia...now Belarus.) My grandfather, born about 1880 immigrated to US about 1904, supposedly to avoid the Russian draft. Other family members who immigrated were brothers, Max, Sam, Morris (Murray), Hymie (Harry), Willie and sister Goldie (Gittel?), and mother (name unknown). Most of family lived in Brooklyn and Far Rockaway. Some went upstate New York and were in hotel business. Abraham was a cabinet maker in the construction business. My grandmother was Becky Stone (Lichtenstein?), maybe from Lodz. Her sister was Annie Goldfarb (Mrs. Nathan). If anything rings a bell, please contact me at correct e-mail: ruthyg@hotmail. com. Ignore any other e-mail listed. Thanks. Ruth Forman Gardner

Archibald Forman in Scotland

Hi all,
I am trying to trace the birthplace of Archibald Forman born in 1790 in Scotland (according to the 1841 England census). Family notes say he was born in Sterling. He moved to London and married a Catherine Berry on Aug 18 1816. They had 9 children - Archibald, James, Thomas, Catherine, Robert, Mary, Catherine (the first Catherine died in 1830), Ann Elizabeth and Bertha.

The original Archibald died on the 23 July 1846 age 56 and in his will he left "the house in Scotland" to his first son Archibald. I assume this house was a previous family residence? Unfortunately there is no clue as to where it was located in Scotland.

Can anyone help and are there any relatives of this family using this forum?

The 1860 census should state where his parents were born. So, did you back track to 1850, etc, and look up Forman. You didn't give any more info on Thomas, dob, and place etc. Locating his birth record or baptism record might be good also. There are a lot of things you can do, but you need to supply more info. Was Thomas an adult, with a spouse and children in 1860? Locating a marriage record might prove to be beneficial. Many counties on the web have that info. Illinois is a wonderful state to research in. They have on line, births, deaths and marriages.

I'm also stuck on Forman, but in Russia in an era where we don't really know where he lived.
Rosie, ancestorhunt@sbcglobal.net
Hello...

After joining ancestry.com some time ago, I have been able to trace my family tree to a Great Grandfather (Thomas Forman), who resided in Chesterfield Twp. NJ in the 1860 federal census. That's where the trail ends.

So...I have two questions:

1) What's the most logical method for now continuing my search?

2) In the 1860 census, there are two columns appearing prior to the person's name...the first is 'Dwelling/Houses; Numbered in the order of visitation'...& the second is 'Families; Numbered in the order of visitation'.

I have no idea how to find the house, if it still exists...as there are no lot & block numbers listed. How can I put my person of interest together w/ an address?

I thought that, if I could accomplish this...I could find the building & then ask original residents in the area.

Need help continuing on...thanks,

Mark Forman
Bordentown, NJ
Forman/Foreman Families of Toronto ON

I'm seeking information on two probably unrelated Forman/Foreman families in Toronto.

The first (older) Forman family:
An unknown Forman (his father possibly named James -- died before 1856, when he was re-interred from Potter's Field to Necropolis Cemetery) marries Mary Key. They are Primitive Methodist and have three sons: George (b ~ 1849), James (b ~ 1853) and Thomas (b ~ 1835).

Mary Foreman (nee Key) was born about 1823 (March 3, 1823) in England. By 1881, she is widowed and in 1901 is living with her neice (Elizabeth Ann Ritchy) and her family (Robertson).

Second Foreman Family:
John Ernest Foreman come to Canada from England. He meets and marries a woman named Edith O'Flaherty. They have a number of children, one of them being Henry Gray Foreman b 2nd September 1882. Henry Foreman marries Florence Gertrude Roberts and they have one child that i know of: Donald Edward Gray Foreman (1912 - 1998).

The history of both families I've mentioned all takes place in Toronto, but I don't know if there is any close connection between the two families.

Any information and leads on ancestors, descendants and living relations will be appreciated! Thank you

I'm interested in filling out this part of my family tree as well. My great grandfather, Lewis Jefferson Forman (b ~1875), was from Maysville. His parents were William Andrew Forman and Amanda Parker. We have the names of 5 of his brothers and 2 sisters, but none of their children.

I have William Andrew Forman's parents as Charles William Forman and Mary Grooms. No record of any other children there.

Charles William Forman's parents are listed as Joseph Forman, Jr., and Mary "Polly" Lander. Charles had a twin sister whose name has been lost, 4 other sisters, and one brother.

Beyond this the line is out of Kentucky, but I'd certainly be interested in hearing from anybody who could help fill in some of the extra names.

Forman / Foreman families in Lincolnshire and Hull, East Yorkshire, 1800's.

I'm looking for a connection between the Forman (or Foreman) families in Hull, Yorkshire and Wainfleet/Toynton/Burgh le Marsh, Lincolnshire.

John Forman, born abt 1812 in Toynton or Thorpe, Lincolnshire married Ann, born abt 1813 in Burgh le Marsh, Lincolnshire. Their daughter Sophia (born abt 1841) married George William Sutherland of Hull in 1862. They had a son, Herbert in 1871.

The 1861 census shows John, Ann and Sophia in Hull along with 2 grandchildren, Ann Sophia Forman (b. 1855) and William Andrew Forman (b.1859). Sophia was only 13 when Ann Sophia was born, so she probably wasn't her mother.

The 1871 census shows the same family group, but the grandchildren's surname is now given as Atkinson.

In 1870, Mary Forman (b. 1845, Wainfleet St. Mary, Lincs; father Nathaniel Bradley Forman, mother Elizabeth nee Norton) married George Gibson in Hull. At the time of her marriage her address was the same as that of John Forman's family in the 1871 census, and the witnesses to the marriage were George William Sutherland and Annie Atkinson.

I am convinced there must be a relationship between John Forman and Mary Forman, but can't find it. I'd also be interested to discover the grandchildren's parentage.

Can anybody shed any light on this for me?

Thank you for your very helpful reply.

I suspected that John Forman's wife was Ann Bagley, but had read some conflicting info on a Bagley message board that said Ann had probably died before 1841 and that John had emigrated to North America with his second wife, Margaret Long, before 1846. From this I had thought I was barking up the wrong tree!

I knew of brother Robert but not John in this context.

My particular interest in the family is that Mary Forman (known as Polly) was my g grandmother.

As I have it in my tree:-
Nathaniel Bradley Forman b.1784 Toynton All Saints and his wife Susanna Tuxford b.1779 Spilsby had sons,
1. John b.1811 and married to Ann Bagley in Burgh 1835
2. Nathaniel Bradley b.1813 Toynton married to Elizabeth Norton 1839 Spilsby.
3. Robert b. 1820 Toynton.

No.2 NBF and Elizabeth, had four children, one of whom was baptised Mary about 1846 Wainfleet St. Mary.

Thus, John was Mary's uncle.

John's paternal Grandparents were Nathaniel Forman b.1750 Scamblesby and Elizabeth Shaw. They were married in 1778 High Toynton.
