Kay,
You have more kin out here than you probably want to know about.
I am the ggg grandaughter of Alexander Forrester, John C.'s brother.
One thing that I find odd & have my doubts about. I have always been told that James(b.1775) was Isaacs father. BUT:
Isaac said that his father was in the Revolutionary Way, and this James would not have been old enough. Also, James' wife Hannah, according to my info, was born in (about)1779
which would have put her at 11 years old when Isaac was born. hmmm...
Could we be wrong about who Isaac's father is? Do yopu have any documentation?
Thanks,
Emily

I have Garnett Leander Forrester with "About July 1859" as his birthdate. Same wife.

I would guess that he was born in Lincoln Co., Tennessee, rather than Missouri. I don't even know if there IS a Lincoln Co., MO...

The dates I have for John are 28 February 1826 and 14 September 1888; for Nancy, 31 October 1827 and 11 November 1888. I have a copy of her father's Bible, and I believe it had this birthdate. Their dates, otherwise, are based on their tombstones.

My info is that they died in Stone Co., MO (I am TRYING to find and obit), but are buried in Buck's Prarie Cemetery in Aurora, Lawrence Co., MO. As I recall, the counties border one another.

I also have some type of legal document they had back in LCT, but don't know exactly what it is. I am going to try to get back in touch with my Mansfield cousin...that's the family that has Garnett Mansfield's Bible pages (NOT the whole Bible)...her mother was an only child and died a few years ago of cancer; her grandmother also recently died, so I'm assuming, as an only child, too, that my cousin might have the photos and Bible pages and such. I doubt there's a photo of Nancy, since the ones I've seen date from the late 1800's, and the Forresters had already moved by then.

I notice the difference in Forrester spelling, but that is not uncommon. I've also seen it as Forster and what have you, so I just pick one and stick with it. :)

Merry Christmas!

zee

Hi Jim,

I have obit for my grandmother, Nancy Gerturde Forrester, born 30 Jan 1889 Lawrence Co., MO - died 27 Oct 1985 Albuquerque, NM. Her parents were Garnett (AKA "Garney") L. Forrester - born 3 Aug 1859 Lincoln Co., MO - died 24 Sep 1948 Lawrence Co., MO and Martha A. Skaggs - born 15 Sep 1867 probably Kansas. Our family information is Garnett Forrester's parents were: John C. Forrester - born 29 Feb 1824 Lincoln Co., TN died 14 Sep 1888 Lawrence Co., MO and Nancy J. Mansfield - born 31 Oct 1824 Lincoln Co., TN died 14 Sep 1888 Lawrence Co., MO (both died on the same date) What dates of birth and death do you have on your Garnett Forrester?

I have ran across the Carr surname now and then, but been unable to make a definite connection.

Other children of Garnett L. Forrester and Martha A. Skaggs were:
Jewel (Joe) Forester B 31 Jul
(Note spelling of last name is different)
Roy Forrester
Guy (Sky) Forrester
Minni Forrester

Have traced this line of Forresters back to William Forrester born abt 1749 North Carolina, but have yet to document it 100%.

What cemetery/location/town in MO are John and Nancy burried? Do you have same info I have that they both passed away 14 Sep 1888?

Will be happy to share more.

Kay
Re: John C. Forrester

Nancy was the daughter of Garnett Mansfield, Sr., and Lydia Sullivan. Most of her siblings were born, lived, and died in Lincoln Co., TN. So did many of the Forresters. Garnett was my 3rd-great-grandfather.

It is my belief (lots of info, though no direct Bible or Deed (primary) stuff) that Garnett is the son of John Mansfield and Nancy Carr.

John is no doubt the son of Josephy Grasty Mansfield and his second wife, who was a Harrison. John's son was named Grasty, and my Garnett had a son named Joseph G.

Nancy was the daughter of Thomas Carr, Sr., and Anne Sanders, who both died in Wilson Co., TN. Thomas was the son of Gideon Carr, Sr., and (Susannah Meekins?).

The Mills family in LCT undoubtedly descends from these Forresters, too. Either John Mills and Eleanor "Nelly/Ellender" Forrester or Ellis Mills and Mary Forrester were the likely parents of John Hewitt Mills. These Forresters were Isaac "Uncle Ike" Forrester's sisters. John H. Mills married a second time, to Temperance "Tempy" Daniel Mansfield, sister of Nancy J. Mansfield.

Moreover, my grandmother's sister, Bessie Ruth Milstead, married Joe Milton Forrester, great-grandson of John C. Forrester.

So yes, we are related, one way and/or the other.

I know of the tombstones of John and Nancy in MO. Are there obits out there?

Jim

Forrester Surname - Cherokee census rolls are online at NARA

For anyone interested, you can now view some of the Cherokee census rolls for your ancestors. There are no Forresters on the Dawes final rolls, I've checked all various spellings, there are quite a few Fosters. There are only a few on the Guion-Miller Census. I am searching through the Kern-Clifton census taken in 1880. I don't know what earlier censuses are available yet. Email me at Plattefamily1@aol.com and I will give you a link and instructions on how to see them.
Good luck to all!

My maiden name is Forister. Some of my ancestors are from Tennessee, and it is rumored that we have Cherokee blood. The facial features of my family and myself would seem to confirm that. Mary Elizabeth Hale was born to William Meadows Hale in 1886 in Lawrenceburg, TN. She married Eli Benjamin Forister sometime after 1908 in Arkansas.
Please reply if you have any helpful information.

Re: Irvin Forrester

Hi Penny,
Ervin Forrester was the son of Hezekiah Forrester and Winnie Reeves. Hezekiah was the son of Richard Forrester and Lizzie Cotham, who came to Hickman Co, TN from SC in 1815. Most of the Forresters in west TN seem to be descended from Richard and Lizzie.
Most of the information that I have came from Lynn Laster's family database at http://fly.hiwaay.net/~bjacobs/genealogy/. Go to that web site for details and dates.
Mattie's brother Halford was my great grandfather. He married Annie Kemp. Their son Vernon was my grandfather. Halford died young, and Annie remarried when my grandfather was still a young boy. No one left alive in my family knows anything about our Forrester relatives, so I would be very interested in anything that you could tell me.
Hope I have been of some help, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Jessie Lee Forrester - Cherokee

I know this is an old thread, but I have been out of genealogy research for a while! I, too, have a indian/Forrester link. My grandfather, Jessie Lee Forrester grew up in Alabama, Mississippi and Alabama. His father was born either in North Carolina or Georgia (records conflict on this) and was named Gene Cease Forrester. My Grandfather tells of growing up with indians and being related in some way. He too had features that might indicate indian heritage. I don't know if it was Cherokee or what tribe. My grandfather was born in Pontotoc MS and later lived in Marion Co, AL and Cullman, AL. My G-G grandfather was named Thomas Forrester and was probably born around 1830. If this matches anyone's family I would love to hear from you!

I am also searching for some Forresters in SC. My g-grandfather is James Gaffney Forrester from the Landrum area. He married Minta Shehan, she may have been Cherokee. I think I have only a partial list of children: Ellis, William Furman, Charles, Rose, and Addie. There is also a Bessie, but she died at a young age. I cannot find out anything about James Gaffney Forrester or Minta Shehan except the years they were born, 1865 and 1873 and I know where they are buried. Charles is my grandfather.
Thanks, in advance.

Sheila

Hello, I am a Forrester descendant also. Your great grandmother,Mattie Mizella, was a first cousin to my grandmother, Docia Forrester Laster. Their fathers were brothers and were Ervin and Francis Marion Forrester, and sons of Hezekiah Forrester and Winney Reeves. My grandmother who I knew for 25 years, said that there was some family story that somewhere back there was indian blood in the family. There is and I have record of our Forresters back to 1700. No where have I been able to find indian blood in the family. For your great grandmother to have 3/4 indian blood would mean that her father, Ervin, was either half or full blooded. He was neither a half or full blooded indian. It is conceivable that his mother, Winney, was half indian but no more. Her father was not indian. I can't attest to what her mother was. Ervin's father, Hezekiah, could not have any significant indian blood. Therefore, Ervin, would not have been any more than 1/4 indian. Mattie's mother was Mary Jane Fowler. I don't see any indian blood her or at best very little. If any of my arguments are incorrect, I'll be happy to discuss this further. How do you descend from Mattie, i.e. who were your grandparents and parents?

P.S. I have an aunt, still living, who often visited "Uncle Ervin" with her mother, Docia, as a small girl.
