Thanks for the reply, but I guess I was not specific about which Elias and which George. The one I was inquiring about was born about 1663-1665 and is speculated to be the son of a George Fort (althought the spelling of "Fort" may have been different, possibly "Forth") who may have came over from England on the ship "Globe" in 1635. This Elias is the Fort from which most of the branch in the Southern US descends. In fact your Elias is one of his descendants.
Thanks again for replying to an almost 4 year old message!

"At any rate, Albert's lineage back to the first Elias:
Albert was the son of Elias (1738-1780) Fort and Lucy (Atkinson?).
Elias was the son of George Fort (before 1700 - 1761) and Mary (?).
George was the son of George Fort (born between 1668 and 1775, died 1719) and Elizabeth Accabe Duckwood and that George was the third son of the first Elias. Some say the first Elias' father was a George."

Some Elias and Lucy (Atkinson?) questions if anybody ever
reads this response to the above very old posting:
0) why the question mark with Atkinson? IOW is there proof
of this Lucy's surname or not?
1) wasn't this the Elias that owned land in Edgecombe, NC?
2) did they have a daughter named Lucy as well?
3) John Piland/Pilant owned land right next door and his
first wife was named Lucy, too -- we were wondering
if there was some connection here as we are looking
for her maiden surname?
4) did Elias's wife out live him?
5) did Elias have a will?
6) did his wife Lucy have a will?

This Fort line of the first Elias goes back to Isle of Wight Co., VA.
John Piland/Pilant's line may also go back to I of W, VA
to the original James Pyland ancestor.

She is listed as Albert's 4th Child in the book. I mentioned the descent from her siblings in my previous message because sometimes a sibling's descendants' records can point you to what you're looking for.
I did find her on FamilySearch.org. Goto http://www.familysearch.com/Eng/Search/af/individual_record.... . They show her as having married IRA E. WILLIAMS sometime before 1849.

Not sure what you mean by "through" Albert Fort -- ancestors or descendants?
At any rate, Albert's lineage back to the first Elias:
Albert was the son of Elias (1738-1780) Fort and Lucy (Atkinson?).
Elias was the son of George Fort (before 1700 - 1761) and Mary (?).
George was the son of George Fort (born between 1668 and 1775, died 1719) and Elizabeth Accabe Duckwood and that George was the third son of the first Elias. FORT is not shown but descent from brother JOSIAH ALBERT FORT through son JAMES WILSON FORT is in Chart 3-31. And descent from MARY N.
I have the Fort book. There is speculation about both a George and a John, but nothing definite. However, I'm seeing ancestral lines on the Fort forums and Mailing List that go back to Elias, and then to George. And the FamilySearch.org site says Elias' father was a George.
So I'm just asking, Where's the documentation? Or is this another case of folks assuming as fact what someone meant as speculation?
Regards,
Tom

I do have little information on Spear Fort and Margaret Titsworth Fort, thier parents. I can go back 4 more generations on the Fort Line. Also, have an interesting account of Margaret being captured by Indians when she was 10 years old and held for 10 months. I do have lots of information on the John Gabriel Fort family. I would love to have info on the Julia Ann Fort family. I don't even have a date of birth, date of death, or marriage record. Let me know if you are interested in the info I have. I would be glad to share. Thanks, Fredia

Thankyou, Fredia, for your prompt reply to my plea. The late Homer Fort speculated that Micajah's wives were Whitaker and Cofield or vice versa. If I had to guess I would agree with him on Cofield for your Isabel anyway. If not that, maybe Spier,Spear etc or even Pitman as a maiden name. You can see this is an obsession with me as is the identity of Sarah (?) Fort Whitehead. Allen had at least Josiah C. ,my gg grandfather who m. Dorthy or Dolly Brantley and came to Tn. Hung up on Brantleys also. Lets keep in touch. Bob Fort

Richard Fort & Sophia Menefee of Tuskegee AL / Cleveland OH

Looking for information on the parents of Richard Fort, Sr., and Sophia Menefee both were from Tuskegee. Richard and Sophia were married in 1897. They had 9 children and they later moved to Cleveland. I'm working on the family history and would like to know the names of their parents. On Richards's death certificate his parents are listed as Dan and Sarah. One of Richard and Sophia's sons, Richard Fort, Jr., changed his name to Ford after he and his family moved to Cleveland.
Help!

Sorry Bob, I really can't help you much. My information comes the book "A Family Called Fort" by Homer T. Fort, Jr. and Drucilla Stovall Jones. They do not know Micajah's first wife at all and only give Isabelle as the name of his second wife. There is also very little about your Allen Fort. He is listed as the 3rd child by his first wife. "Died in Halifax Co.NC in 1798. He had married a woman named Sarah (or Sally) no later that 1789 and prbably quite a bit earlier. After his death his widow married William Whitehead of Hlifax Co., a widower. The 1790 census shows Allen as having a son under 16 in that year, but this person has not been identified." I assume you have much more that this since you are a gggrandchild of Allen. Sorry I couldn't help. Fredia

I cannot be sure, but there is circumstantial evidence that Sarah Fort Whitehead was a Josey. I have found a record that indicates she and husband William Whitehead owned slaves belonging to the estate of James Josey, deceased, and we know that James Josey had a daughter Sally. Maybe this is a lead worth pursuing.

David Gammon

Forts in VA, SC, etc. Elizabeth Fort Muse

From "A Family Called Fort":
Chart 3-8 (from Chart 3-2)
Elizabeth Fort and Thomas Muse

ELIZABETH FORT, daughter of Joseph of Robeson County, N.C., married Thomas Muse of Prince William County, Va., about 1770-75. At the time of the Revolution the couple was living in Fairfield District (County), S.C. They are known to have had seven children:
1) ASENATH MUSE, a daughter, who married Thomas Hines.
2) HUMPHREY POPE MUSE, who married a Miss Staunton.
3) A daughter who married a Mr. Godbolt.
4) JAMES FORT MUSE, born Feb. 9, 1776, probably in Fairfield District, S.C. He married Margaret Adelaide Bourgeat on March 22, 1821; she was the daughter of Narcisse Bourgeat and Marie Barbe Filhiol and was born Dec. 5, 1803 at Fort Miro, La. James served as a sheriff at one time, and later moved into the study of law and into practicing law in La. He died at Bayou Lettsworth, La., Jan. 14, 1843. His widow Margaret was still living in May, 1894. Their five children were:
a) GEORGE WASHINGTON MUSE, killed in the Civil War.
b) JULIA WASHINGTON MUSE, born 1823, who married Dr. Christopher Hunt Dabbs in 1845. She died 1868 in Monroe, La. She is known to have had:
1) James Muse Dabbs, born Dec. 9, 1845 in Monroe, married Marie Olivia Collett, Jan. 24, 1867;
2) Julia Adelaide Dabbs, born 1849.
c) ELLEN MUSE, who married a Mr. Coats.
d) ANNE MUSE, who is believed to have married a Mr. Horten.
e) JAMES FORT MUSE II, was born Oct. 27, 1832 in Oldham County, Ky., and attended the old Jefferson College on the east side of the Mississippi River, near Donaldsonville, La. He married first Cecile Roberta Bercergea, born 1842, daughter of Adolphe Bercergea and Elizabeth __, whom he met at Donaldsonville. After her death he married Eliska Tircuit, born July 11, 1844 at Pointe Coupee, La. James Fort Muse II died at New Orleans April 22, 1890. Eliska died at Moorhead, Miss., March 13, 1939. (See Chart 3-21)
5) THOMAS MUSE, about whom nothing further is known.
6) JOSEPH MUSE, who died unmarried.
7) ELIAS POPE MUSE, who married Martha DuBose.

About The Family
George Washington Muse, according to a family tradition, was the first Confederate soldier killed at the first Battle of Bull Run, the first general engagement of the Civil War.
James Fort Muse II captained boats on the Mississippi during the heyday of the great steamboat era. He commanded the "Natchez," one of the waterborne lovelies of that day, and also the "James M. White," largest of them all, which was destroyed by fire in a tragedy that took some 40 lives.
A family letter, dated August 30, 1957, says that the cemetery at Bayou Lettsworth, in which James Fort Muse (Sr.) supposedly was buried, was engulfed by the river in the early 1900's.
The Bourgeat family and others linked with it were among the early French migrants to Louisiana.

Authors' Notes
The Fort-Muse Link.
Joseph Fort's 1797 will in Robeson County mentions his daughter Elizabeth Muse and four of her children: James, Thomas, Joseph, and Elias.
James Fort Muse Materials.
E. W. McDonald of Pleasantville, Ohio, whose wife is a Muse descendent, kindly supplied much of the material on the James Fort Muse line as contained on this chart and subsequent charts. He also provided cemetery and other data that was of help with another Fort branch in the St. Francisville, Louisiana, area.

Beulah Benton Fort & Robert Arhibald McDowell, Kershaw Co., SC

Here is what I know and maybe you can just correct or tell me what I don't know.

BEULAH BENTON FORT, born 7 Oct 1861 in Cotton Valley, Macon County, Alabama, married Robert Archibald McDowell on 7 Oct 1885 at the Methodist Ch, Cotton Valley, Macon, AL. Robert was born June, 1854 in Flat Rock, Kershaw County, SC and he was her second cousin. (Robert's mother was Mary Ann Reaves and his grandmother was Elizabeth C. Kelly. Beulah's father, William Watt Fort, was the son of Elizabeth Dicy Kelly, Elizabeth C. Kelly's sister. Elizabeth Dicy Kelly and Elizabeth C. Kelly were daughters of David Kelly and Elizabeth Tyner. )

Beulah and Robert had one son. Robert A. McDowell, Jr or Robert Austin McDowell was likely born Aug, 1890. He may be the R. A. McDowell in the 1920 Census married to Sallie E., children Hollis, John, Amelia, Elizabeth and Mary.

Beulah died 19 Dec 1896 in Camden, Kershaw, Co., SC. About Feb, 1900, widower Robert A. McDowell appears to have married a Mary Ann Elizabeth Haile, born Jan, 1869, died 23 Feb 1948. If they had further children is unknown. Possibly Robert died 28 Oct 1919 in Charleston, but that may be another Robert A. McDowell born 1854.

Beulah was my great aunt, sister to my namesake and grandfather, T. Hicks Fort. My own sisters and I never heard much about our grandfather's 7 brothers and sisters that lived to adulthood. I have been successful in tracking down living descendants of Terah, Eugene, Zepher Pearl, and Charles Bruce. I am still trying to find descendants of Beulah and William W. (The 7th, a younger brother, Palmer, never married and with no known descendants.)

Anything that you can tell me would be appreciated.

Thanks!
