I keep trying to post this, so if I apologize if this is a duplicate.
The third child that you listed for Eulalie Justine Fortier Forte and Joseph Borrow is "Achimese". I'm wondering if this name could be wrong and instead "Arthemise". The Maple View Cemetary lists Arthemise Putvin and Victor Putvin. If this is the same person then the birthyear you've list is incorrect. The gravestone says 1863. The 1930 US Census lists her as 66 years old estimating her birthyear as about 1864. I have photos of her when she was elderly and her children/grandchildren.

Thank You for the info! I have since finished this line of the Forcier's that was previously undocumented. The Fortier line was incorrect and it came from a misspelled family history that was taken from my Great Grandmother. The writer of that document added all sorts of incorrect information that has been taken as the gospel ever since.
I now have this line very well documented and I believe all the info is correct. I have been in contact with Forcier family in WA state who have given me more info and photos.
I appreciate your time spent on this.
Kitty, your Damase Forcier was born 27 October 1844 and baptized the next day at Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire-de-St-Hyacinthe in St-Hyacinthe County Quebec. His parents are Damase Forcier and Elisabeth Crete. You can find Damase, Jr., his wife Malvina, and their children on the same page as his parents, and some of his siblings in the 1875 state census of Round Grove, McLeod County, Minnesota. I also have found his family in 1880 (Grove Lake, Pope County, Minnesota), 1885 (Brainerd, Crow Wing County, Minnesota), and 1900 (Fulton Precinct, King County, Washington).

If you'd like to see the image of his baptism with an abstract of the contents translated from French into English, visit http://www.arslanmb.org/ArsGenCo/PQ-ParishRegisterLookup.htm and submit a request for this record or any other Quebec records you are interested in.

I haven't yet been able to find a connection to the Joseph Fortier of Little Falls, Minnesota. What is your source that his father's name is Moise?

Take a look at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Oaks/1015/desc_joseph_for... and look at descendant number 53. Your Damase Forcier is not listed in this household, but he should be their 2nd child. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the information on this page, but it doesn't look like this family is connected at all to the Fortier family of Quebec. (I am a Fortier descendant and am researching the Fortier family.)

Joseph Fortier: Priest of Little Falls, Minnesota 1880

I am looking for any information on the parents of Joseph Fortier who was born in Quebec,Canada on July 19, 1854. He graduated from Nicollet College at 18 years old. He spent 2 more years there with theological courses. He went on to the Grand Seminary of Three Rivers for one year. He stayed as an assistant there until 1879. In 1880 he was in charge of the Church of The Holy Family in Little Falls, Minnesota.
All of this information was found in a family bio by my Great grandmother Mary Lavina/Melvina Forcier DeChaine in 1938. She references the book "The History of The Upper Mississippi Valley". I found this book in it's entirety on Google Books for free and that is how I found Joseph Fortier's correct birth date.
What I am really seeking is info on the brothers of Joseph Fortier's father so I can find the parents of his uncle Damase/Demas(Thomas)FORCIER who was either born in Canada or Vermont in 1843. He lived in Vermont until around 1876 then he moved with his family and wife Melvina Rondo to Minnesota. They lived there until approx. 1890 when part of the family moved to Washington state. He died in Seattle in 1929.
I cannot read the French in the Canadian church records. I can make out the names most of the time. Are exact dates even included? I found several Joseph Fortier's born in 1854 but have no idea which one is him.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as Joseph is the only clue I have to solve this family mystery. Thank you! Kitty
kittyphillips@comcast.net

Hello Robert,

I'm not sure if you are still actively looking for the above referenced information but in case you are, here is what I've found:
David Favreau (sometimes known as Jovide or Jovite) was the son of Jean-Baptiste Favreau and Marie Séguin.

Arthemise Fortier's parents were: David Belouin-Fortier and Philomene Surprenant. This last info is more tentative. I found a photograph of David Favreau with an older woman which my mother identifies at grandma Maltais. Not sure where the Maltais family fit in all of this.
I have a question for you as well: do you have the birth dates of Arthemise and David's children? As well, do you know where David and Arthemise were born?
I can be reached at: cyberien@sympatico.ca

Re: Zelia Fortier

Newspaper death notice in the Philadelphia Inquirer for Zelia Fortier, wife of the late Hypolit Fortier, died suddenly on 6 July 1902, age 66 years, 6 months, 5 days. Funeral services were at the home of her daughter Zoe Smart 419 Vine St. Camden NJ. Burial at Mt Peace Cemetery, New Orleans.

The Zelia Fortier in the death notice, born about 1836, was the mother of sisters Zelia and Zoe and brother George. Their father was Hypolite Fortier. Sisters Zelia and Zoe and George appear with Henriette Fortier in 1870 census. Is Henriette an error or was she baptized with one name, but used another? She appears as Zelia or Zellia in 1850 (with her parents) and 1860 census (with Hypolite) and in 1890s city directories as widow of Hypolite (he died in the Civil War, 28 July 1864 in Georgia)

From "The Fortier Families and Allied Families" by Estelle M. Fortier Cochran: Zelia Fortier, wife of Hypolite Fortier, was the daughter of Charles Norbert Fortier and Marie Charlotte Zoe Dusseau. Hypolite Fortier was the son of Edmond (also found as Edward) Fortier and Mathilde Labranche.

Dan and Don Fortier are twins and they are my cousins.
Alberta Schwehm married a Fortier who is their grandmother.
I am related to the Schwehm family and the Fortiers who married the Schwehm family.

My interest with research in Jefferson Parish history led me to more research with Fortier. My mothers first cousin J. B. and Frank Fortier came with me to the library and to courthouses to do research.
The different Fortier families owned lots of property in La.

For their own interests to give to their descendants they came to make sure we could correct some mistakes for ourselves which were recorded in Cochran's research.

There will always be mistakes with so many cousins marrying cousins and people with same names. She was also not living here at the time.

She had most of my cousins information recorded with wrong dates etc.

My cousins father was married twice. Alberta Schwehm was his second wife. So J. B. Fortier and Frank Fortier have step brothers and sisters. Cochran got the information incorrect on the step brothers and sisters and omitted information that was necessary on the first wife.

I have to constantly correct my own mistakes. So I can see how it easily happens. At least people can find information which she recorded to use as a way to find more information in the libraies and courthouses. People can always correct the mistakes they find in the book regarding their own family history. It was great that she could get the information of pics and stories when she did because now so many have died who knew the stories.
Later,
Julie
St. James has an excellent library and they are very good at preserving ancestral history.
There are many societies which they have to preserve history.

You would enjoy getting Marie Persac's map poster and having it framed. There are quite a few Fortiers up and down river on that map. You and your wife and the future generation would enjoy it immensely.

Alcee Fortier has books in volumes which feature historical backgrounds of prominent people who owned properties. I believe it is 3 volumes and there are pictures by the names of the individuals. You would like to copy the relatives of your wife's family from these books.

He also wrote down the story of Uncle Remus's Breer Rabbit into English and had it copywrited and published. It was an old old African story told by a slave on Laura Plantation in Vacherie, St. James Parish. In later years someone stole the story and recopywrited and the Fortier family did not take issue with it because many had so much money. Many of the Fortiers lost holdings in the 1930's with the stock market crash. Some lost some holdings also from after the civil war. For some it was difficult to maintain properties that required large amounts of labor. They were used to having many slaves since the 1700's when La was first settled.

Look into the history of Michel Fortier which is also interesting.
There is historical documentation on some Fortiers in the museum next door to the Cathedral. Worth going to see it again if you already saw it.
There are also some of the earlier Fortier's buried in St. Louis #1.
You would enjoy getting Marie Persac's map of the Mississippi River which includes numerous Fortier families up and down river. It is a beautiful poster to frame and keep for future generations.
If you are a historian you would love it anyway. It includes landowners all the way up to Natchez Miss.
It is also quite beautiful when framed.
Persac did a lot of watercolor drawings when he did surveys for real estate in the New Orleans area. There is a book that Williams Research Center sells that has his watercolor drawings that include many plantation homes along the river also.
The New Orleans courthouse in the archives has many of his original watercolors in their courthouse property purchase records.

Also, St. James is proud of its heritage. The library in St. James would be worth visiting.

St. Louis #3 is very interesting to wander in. There are numerous Fortier's (in fact most of them) who were buried there. Among the burial plots is Alcee Fortier who your wife is related to. Many of the St. James parish Fortier's are buried there. The Fortier's liked to have funerals at St. Louis Cathedral and they liked having their burial plots in St. Louis #3 on Esplenade. You can also look up the St. Louis #3 burial records which index the Fortiers and also show the original purchased plots with the names of later descendants buried within.

The St. James Fortier's and most of the families who owned plantations along the river also owned homes in New Orleans. They would gather with other family members for special occasions and when purchasing supplies for their needs upriver.

They are related to the Soniat's and quite often they married first and second cousins. The LaBarre's did the same thing. I believe they married quite a few LaBarre's also.

Alcee Fortier was the great La. historian that Fortier high school is named after.

Hope this might help you in some way if you don't already know this information.

Elmwood Plantation was owned by the Fortier family.
It burned in the 90's. It was on River Rd. reached by going all the way down Clearview and turning west on River Rd. It fronted River Rd.

There is a book in the library written by a historian about Elmwood Plantation also. They have pictures in the book. It traces some of its roots. I have traced it a little further if you are interested.

The entire tract of Kenner was owned by one of the Fortier's also. When he died the family sold the properties and it eventualy was purchased by William Kenner to become Kenner today.
But the family owned the entire portion of what we know as Kenner today.

By the way I know where most of the plantations are.
The ones down river etc.

An interesting story about the one upriver.
One of the Fortier's had a plantation downriver and it was also used as a school and college at one time.
Now it is Manresa Catholic Retreat House.
The reason the family gave it to the church as a retreat house was to save it from union hands.
The plantation was used to as a meeting and training facility for Confederate soldiers.
When the union took over New Orleans and surroundings they immeditately made plans to save it from union hands.

This would include the parish of Jefferson for many of the older Fortier's since Jefferson was once Orleans Parish.

I did a lot of research on Soniat and Fortier.
There were some mistakes in the Fortier book.
I know many of her photos she obtained from distant cousins here.
Some information can also be obtained in Williams Research Center.
Soniats have an extensive geneology based all the way back to France which the family came here with originaly when granted land grants.

Norbert Fortier owned a land grant in what is now Jefferson Parish . The Labarre's were on the east side of him.
His property would have been about from Clearview to David Dr.or Hickory. and from River to Lake.
His son in law was Pierre Sauve. He he gave part of his property to. Sauve Rd is named after him.

Alcee Fortier the historian was their cousin who lived down river near Oak Alley.

Not sure if you are from New Orleans area.
The Soniat plantation which the Fortier's lived in is now the Colonial Country Club in Harahan, La. off of Jefferson Hwy. near River Rd.
The Country Club ruined the facade of the plantation and made a new facade which destroyed the look of the original home.

The Soniat's lived in this plantation for many many years in Harahan. The Fortiers also lived on the plantation when they married one of the daughters.
The Fortier's began in the New World in Quebec as one of the first famlies of Quebec. A great genealogy can be gotten from "Association des Familles Fortier." Their web site is www.famillesfortier.ca. You can join for 25 American each year. The CD Dictionary of all known Fortier's is 25 American. I got the hard copy. I went to the yearly "Gathering" in 2006 and am going this year. Several members come from New Orleans. This year the gathering will be in Ile d'Orleans, Quebec. I was stuck in 1800 and couldn't go further back until I connected with this site and did DNA testing where I connected with another Fortier that had good documentation. Good luck with your search.

--jimmy fortier

Amanda Fortier (born abt 1869 in Canada) lived in Berlin, NH

Amanda Fortier (born abt 1869 in Canada) was my G-grandmother. She married my G-grandather, Peter Chassie (born abt 1862 in Canada) in Canada or NH (date and place of marriage is unknown). William Chassie (born 9 April 1895 in Berlin, NH) was the eldest of three sons and two daughters all found in census records to be living in Berlin, NH. I have not been able to trace Peter or Amanda back into Canada or find any record of the marriage.

Later, the family turns up in Woodland (Baileyville), ME where we find the men working in the paper mill or in the woods. (William lists his occupation in census records as a river driver.) My father, Robert Chassie, was born in Baileyville, ME on 7 December 1914. There is a female child of Peter and Amanda buried in Baileyville. In 1916, William relocates to Rumford, ME leaving the rest of the family in Baileyville. There, I lose track of Peter and Amanda again. No death dates, death records, burial records -- nothing.

I suspect Canadian First Nations blood on the Fortier/Chassie side of the family. Both my brother and I were told by our grandmother that Pepe (William) was part Indian. We were shown an old photograph of a First Nation's woman in traditional dress and told she was Pepe's grandmother, or G-grandmother. We were told not to tell anyone about this or we would be called "half-breeds" and the other kids would look down on us. Unfortunately, the photograph was lost after my grandmother died. We suspect the First Nation's blood comes from the Fortier side, but it is possible it comes from the Chassie side (or both sides)

It was not unusual in the late 1800's for "half breeds" to relocate, hide their First Nation's ancestry and try to pass as white. Sometimes, they changed their names, birth data, etc. in order to do this. For all we know, Peter, or Amanda, may not even have been Peter, or Amanda.

If any of you out there in Fortier-land can help me with this, I would love to hear from you.

(Note: The Amanda Fortier posted on the this board who died in Livermore Falls, ME is 1-2 generations too young to be this one.)

My Great-Grandmother, Amanda Fortier, was born in Canada and married Peter Chassie in Berlin, NH. I have not been able to find parents for one either one of them. None of their children were named Joseph, but it is possible Joseph is a father, brother, uncle, etc. of Amanda.
