Soapstone Baptist P073/P118

Last night I attended a Fish Fry at the subject church. I talked to their maintenance man, who said that he had just cleaned up the old cemetery (P073), that's located very near the one that the church uses (P118). I assume this would be the one where Timothy Fortner is planted at.

You can view Soapstone Baptist tombstone inscriptions, history, images and Google Maps by visiting http://www.sciway3.net/scgenweb/pickens-county/cemetery-html....

Your talking about a church/area that's very rich in Black heritage. Several of the senior church members say that its history is slowly being forgotten with the passing of time. Everything should be done to help them preserve it and my Pickens County SCGenWeb Project can help do that.

Paul Kankula
gcgenweb@bellsouth.net
Jeffrey,
My wife is a 2C1R of your grandfather, Raymond Lee Fortner, if our information is correct. Ray Lee was a son of Spencer Eaves Fortner (1882-1976) and Eva Underwood (1882-1924). Spencer waa a son of James Spencer Fortner (1855-1899) and Ellen Pamelia Baker (1860-1958). James Spencer Fortner was a son of Spencer Eaves Fortner (1824-1917) and Malinda Catherine Lester (1832-1888). Spencer Eaves Fortner was a son of John Fortner (ca1791-1858?) and Nancy Eaves (ca 1795-ca 1856). This Spencer Eaves Fortner was my wife's GG Grandfather. He was a Confederate Army Veteran who spent some time in a Union Prison Camp according to the application he filed for a Confederate War Pension in 1904. I have more information on the family should you wish to contact me privately.

Hal Olson
Aurora CO

WE NEEED TO TALK. As far back as I can remember, no one in the family could tell where my gg grandfather JAMES SMITH FORTNER got his middle name. Your post, listing a "Smith' side of the family really has my attention. My James Smith Fortner (1829-1910) was the son of Jonathan (1795- died aft 1870) & grandson of Sugar (1766-1850). When James Smith left Claiborne County TN with his wife and family enroute Garden City, KS, he remembered the stories his grandfather told about the family name being FAULKNER when they came over from England so he decided to change it back for his branch of the family - only problem there was that he forgot to put the "u" into the name so that's why I'm a FALKNER instead of a Faulkner or Fortner or Forkner (Sugar's father - Emanuel Ford Forkner). Send me a email direct to jfalkner@terraworld.net and I'll email you a gedcom file of my tree for you to compare and mayabe we can find common ground. Would REALLY like to see your 'Smith' side of the family. Thanks - Jim Falkner

Thank you for responding. I am Bridget Fortner Day, daughter of Roy Fortner. His father was Isaac I.B. Fortner and his father was Elisha Fortner. Elisha's father was Jonathan and I think he received a land grant of more than 3000 acres here in Claiborne County, TN. I live on that farm now. I am collecting info for a book, hopefully to be completed in the spring, on the descendants of Elisha Fortner, the ancestors of Elisha and a few personal stories passed down by the old timers about the Fortners. I have over 100 pages with all names indexed. I have one page on the descendants of Ballard Fortner that is very incomplete. For the family of Major Fortner and Montana Sweat I have listed seven childrens' names but not very much info beyond that. I would welcome any info that you have on Ballard's family (names, birthdates, death dates, marriage dates)that you would be willing to share. I will look forward to hearing from you.

I was always told by my grandmother before she died that I was related to a child of Abraham Lincoln and a Native American woman. Not sure, but this may be the same side of the family. Have not checked for a Sarah Fortner and am not sure if it was supposed to be on my Smith or Fortner side of the family

I will go ahead and hook you up with my family info, but sadly I am also having trouble with the Smith side of my family. I know Fortner came from Von der Pfort and or Pfort becaue I have a Peter Fortner who was a Hessen soldier and then he was captured by the American Revolution side and deserted. It is possible there was a branch of relatives that also came over from Hesse, Germany. Will get back to you after I do more research. But, I did find a Fortner link somewhere from England but not sure when I ran into it.

Hi, I will try this next few days to get all my notes together. Have names right now but not the dates. Major Clarence Fortner son of William Ballard Fortner married Montana Sweat in 1935. They had 6 children. Betty Irene (Fortner) Besedich, Joyce Ruby (Fortner) Valentine, Arnold Clarence, Robert Lee, Donna Jean (Fortner) Moody and Jerry. Jerry is my husband. William Ballard's father was James H Fortner. They are buried in Lily Grove Cemetery just outside of Tazewell, TN. I will be happy to try to fill in some of the blanks. Deborah

I understand that your Nathan is the brother to my grandfather. I have not been successful in going back much further than my great grandfather which I have listed as Thomas N Fortner and his wife Nica (nice nicey) Powell. Any blanks you could fill in or possibly any further back would be great! I have a few photos of James H and Iona Carter and of course their children one of them being my mother. I do not know where Nica Powell goes back to either.
I have heard about the "fighting" and no one will give anything up info wise but I don't know anything for sure.
I would like you to email me if you would at
joannegipson@yahoo.com

Hi,
I too am from the Fortner Family and having GREAT difficulty in going back on the Fortner side! (we are a very secretive people!) Any way what I have is this I hope it helps:

My Grandfather James Halcomb Fortner was married to Iona Carter. James' father was Thomas N Fortner born abt 1860 was married to Nica Sarah Powell born abt 1866. Thomas N is as far back as I can get. Thomas N was born in Kentucky. My grandfather, his son James H was born in Ashland Mississippi.
I have heard stories of the Indian ancestry, but it is hard to trace back. The reason being, or so I've been told, is that it was hard for an Indian to get work, so when census takers came they claimed to be white, not Indian and that is why we can't seem to get anywhere.
You are welcome to see my tree and see if you can gain any insight from it. Good Luck!

Solomon/Soloman Fortner and Elizabeth James of Indiana

I am looking for information on Solomon Fortner b abt 1817 in NC and died before 1858 in Posey Twp, Franklin, IN. He married Elizabeth James in 1838 in Franklin, IN. I am unsure about children for them and I cannot find them in 1840 or 1850 censuses. Elizabeth James Fortner remarried in 1858 in Franklin, IN to Robert Jemison and they had 1 child, Thomas Jemison b 1859. Any information on Elizabeth James and her family would be appreciated.

My great- grandfather was Jim Henry Fortner. I don't know where he was born, but he married his wife, Fannie, in 1890 in Tennessee. Might not be the same though.

As I wrote the only info I had on F. Fortner was a photo of his grave now I do not have that.He was born in Georgia in 1942 he died in a jail Georgia in 1982. He lived in the Blue Ridge Mountains This is all I know about him. I lived in foster care until I was 17 so I know nothing about him. He left my Mom and my Mom left me. I did get a call from her she said he was dead and he was killed in Jail. His Mom made moon shine this is all she knows. I would like to see a photo of him some day. All she said he was an American Indian. I told her you must be wrong I am pale skin. She said I have his cheek bones. They are very high. I looked up a site under an American Indians chat site. l read what other said about them self. That is how I learned that parts of my body take after his family. Also have you ever heard that American Indians are Jews? I have been told that I look Jewish by other Jews??? My Mom said we are not Jews on her side.
