I descend from an African American Family that was from Elbert County, Georgia. However, my family descends from the white Fortsons by blood. I descend from an interacial couple named William E. Fortson(white) and Mirtis Fortson(black). They had 16 children;11 daughters and 5 sons.
Eric J. Blue

Re: Fortson Family

Carol,
Though I didn't find your William Henry in the Fortson Family volume by John Wright Boyd, I can repeat some of the background Boyd gave in "A Family History, Lt. Thomas Fortson Jr. (1742-1824) and some of his descendants.

"Members of the Fortson family were among the very early English settlers in the Virginia colony after 1660. Thomas Fortson Sr ca 1715-1742 of Caroline Co., Va., was the father of William Fortson (1736-1812) and Lt. Thomas Fortson Jr., (1742-1824) William Fortson and family resided in Spotsylvania County, Va., prior to moving to Lexington, Kentucky, where William died on 4-14-1822. William married Mildred Marshall Ferguson and had a large family." Their children included Lucy, John, William, Marshall, James, Richard and Frances.

A Stephen Fortson who lived in Louisa County Va. in 1802-06 may have been a cousin of William and Thomas. Boyd had information Stephen Fortson and wife Elizabeth moved with seven children from Virginia to Roane County, Tennessee in 1822. Steven and Elizabeth's children are William, Stephen, Martha, Elizabeht, Adaline, Mary Ann and Charles. Thomas Sr. also had brothers or close relatives James and Robert.

Thomas Jr. and family moved to Georgia after the American Revolution.

If researching early members of this family, remember that Fortson was spelled many ways including Forston and Farsten and even Fosson.

I might need to know your Fortson grandparent's name or, even better, your great grandparents. My Fortsons were born in Elbert Co, GA and ended up in TX but I have just found some information about some who lived in Fortson, GA. How exciting to have a town named for your own ancestors. My email is marypat@taipan.nmsu.edu if you would like to email me directly, otherwise just post to this Fortson message board.
Mary Lou Pendergrass

I am only a guest at FamilyTree. com so you may need to reply to me directly. I am also directly descended from the Fortsons you mention. They married into my Bacon line. I only have a little information but am very interested. In a will I found a Tovenor Fortson Oliver so I suspected the connection with your Fortsons.
Mary Lou Pendergrass marypat@taipan.nmsu.edu

Interesting information. My grandmother was Cherrie Fortson (Campbell) who was the daughter of a Charlie Fortson, and she passed away in 1986. I do know that Cherrie was born in 1915 and was living in Elbert County, GA in 1941 when my mother, Ernestine, was born. I would like to get any information that you have regarding Charlie Fortson. I know that his oldest daugher, Roselle is still residing in Elberton. And, Horace Fortson, one of his sons is residing in Athens, GA. I hope that this helps you.

My father was Ernest Percy Fortson. His mother was Ethel Rufus Sanders. She was born circa 1897 and my dad was born 1926 in Baltimore Maryland. I have no knowledge of my father's ancestory. My grandmother was born on a slave ship which docked in Florida. We suspect her heritage was from the Virgin Islands but we are not sure. My dads birth was out of wedlock. If these names have any meaning to anyone, please e-mail me. Thanks.

Fortsons in Kentucky

I am looking for information on the surname Fortson. My ggggrandmother is Lucinda Fortson (b. 1835). I have found her in the 1870 census living in Christian County, Kentucky, with three children, the youngest of which would become my gggrandmother, Georgia Holland. I also have her name (misspelled) on Georgia's death certificate. That is all the information that I can find about her. Georgia's father was Abe Holland, according to the death certificate. I can find no record of him. He is not living with the family in 1870.

I did notice that there was a W.H. Fortson living in Christian County in the mid-1800s who owned 20 or more slaves. My ggggrandmother is black. I wonder if she was once owned by this W. H. Fortson. In the 1870 census, there is a white William Fortson living near by ggggrandmother and her children. I also noted an Abraham Holland, a slaveowner, living in neighboring Trigg County.

Does anyone have any information about Lucinda or Fortsons black or white in Christian County? Fortson seems to have been a fairly common name in that county in the 1800s. I am hoping to find some links that reveal more info about my ancestor.

Thanks!
