I had to go back quite a few generations before I found a common ansester. We are in the same area near Gouldsboro in Washington County, Maine. If you check out the McNabb Family Tree you will find living McNabb and living Foss and then my husbands parents were Thalma and Virgil Foss. That will lead to a whole lot of Foss's.
Hope this helps.

I don't know if you are still reading the posts however I just started working on this side of the family. Julia Mae Foss, did marry a Farbo. They had Three children that I am aware of. Alfonzo "Art" Farbo, Vincent Farbo, Raymond Russell Farbo. I haven't found any information on them. She was also married to Andrew J. Anderson my great grandfather. She had four children with him. The paper that my great Aunt sent to me is difficult to read. My mom has information in her baby book and family bible. She is out of town and will back tomorrow. I will be checking with her when she gets back. Please email me at becky@cssutah.org.

I found out two years ago through researching more that I am not actually decsended from Charles Mordant Foss, but rather his first cousin, John Charles August Foss. He is the son of Johan Augustus Foss, Ole Stampe Foss's half-brother. I have a bit more info about him, but unfortunatley not much more on Charles Mordant Foss. (though I do have a picture of Charles Mordant!)

I am curious to know how we are related! My grandfather is Wallace Powell, son of Ralph Clinton Powell, son of Lillian Charlotte Foss. Do those names mean anything to you?

I've been researching this same line, and have found a ton of misinformation online due to the confusion of the 2 John Fosses, both of whom married women named Mary. As people keep copying and reposting the incorrect info, it just seems to get worse and worse. So I decided the only way to sort it all out was to start at the beginning with the 2 Johns, and do a tree containing every single descendant, so that everyone was in the proper tree. I'm up to the 1840s so far. I've been researching census records, marriage & birth records, etc. to make sure it's as accurate as can be.

Here's what I've worked out so far:

John Foss, born 1638 in Denmark, married Mary Berry in 1658 in Rockingham, NH. John's parents were David Lauritzen and Anna Jensdatter Hundevad. Mary's parents were William Berry and Jane Lake Hermins. She was born in Portsmouth, NH in 1644 or 45.

John & Mary had 10 children: John (1660), Joshua (1665, my ancestor), Elizabeth (1666), Samuel (1668), Thomas (1672), William (1673), Zachariah (1676), Hannah (1677), Richard (1681), and Jane (1689). The children were all born in Rye, NH, except Elizabeth who was born in Portsmouth, NH.

The other John Foss was born in 1633 in England. His parents were Stephen Foss and Mary Jackson. He married Mary Chadbourne in 1664 or 1666 in Berwick, ME (probably 1664 as that's when the first child was born, but I have not confirmed it yet). Mary was born in Boston, MA.

This John & Mary had 5 children, all born in Dover, NH: Walter (1664), Jemimah (1666), Mary (1667), Hinkson (1679), and Humphrey Chadbourn (1681).

I'd welcome any info from other Fosses to help clear up these 2 tangled trees!

Louise Foss does sound familiar; I believe my maternal grandmother, Clara Meynell [Foss] Eldredge cir.1895-1979, had a sister by that name. She would have been the daughter of Capt. Almus Y & Charlotte [Meynell] Foss, of Maine. If I remember correctly, the other siblings were: Rich/Richard/Richmond, Rufus, and Frank.

I am looking for family of these two; either before or after. Please reply to Lady.Connoisseur@hotmail.com. Did they have brothers/sisters, where did they live, etc. any information would be greatly appreciated. Their marriage is recorded in the Hancock County Marriages of 1871. He was a Mariner, out of the coast of Maine; she a housewife, who died c.1895 in childbirth with Rufus? Foss. I believe that I heard that there were 5 children total. My relation is thru one of their children, Clara [Foss]Eldredge [c.1889-1979], who later went on to marry Arthur Eldredge [b1880-1972], and their 3 children, Arthur jr [c.1906-c.1996], Ruth [my mother 1912-2000] & Frances [1914-1985].

I have a little different information about Mariah B. 'Rye' Cruff. I have a photo of her gravestone at Moss Ridge Cemetery, Carthage, IL that gives her birthdate as 2-22-1849 and death date as 9-16-1894 (and includes the 'h' on her given name). According to our family lore, Rye died along with twins during childbirth.

The gravestone date seems to also be more in line with the census records than a girl born in 1853. In the 1860 MA census, Mariah is shown as about 13 years old, and in the 1870 IL census, she's about 22.

Also, OLEARY's post gives Mariah's father as William Harrison Cruff b. 1820, and this seems to explain a discrepancy I had with what seems to be his son, William Jr. (b. 1839) as being Mariah's father.

I have some info on the Jenney family (including gravestone photos) as well as Sarah Hannah Wayt's family going back a number of generations, if you're interested.

Greg

Thank you for the info. I have the "Jenney Book" and could not hook our line to it. Will see if I can now find where we do. Truly appreciate the info on Charles Orloff and his first wife. Wonder if anyone knows where she is buried. We know that Charles Orloff Jenney went to Colby Kansas and his wife and babies died there. Have not found proof of that except family talk. He returned to Illinois and married Della Brown about 1897 and they came to Columbus Kansas before 1902 and farmed and the farm remained in family for more than 100 years. Thanks again.
Foss Family of NY

Nora Hinst b.19 Aug 1898, at 178-26th St., Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY d. 10 Jan 2002, West Islip, Suffolk Co., NY was a friend of my mother-in-law; when she died, I came across the following info.in papers once owned by Nora Hinst. There was a birth record for Borghild Florense Foss b. 19 Aug 1898. Her father was Karl Foss b. abt 1867, Norway d. bef. 19 Aug 1898, occupation tailor. Her mother was Betsy Myhre b. 1869, Norway d.17 Sept 1912. A paper I believe to be a baptismal record shows a Nora Nilson; father Nils Nilson, mother Betsy Myhre. The date on this paper is 26 Mar 1900. I can not read what it says because it is written in what I believe to be Norweigan. On a hand written piece of paper, that may have been written by Nora is the following:
+Karl Foss d. 1898 #4510
+Betsy Myhre Foss d. 17 Sept 1912 #17596; 2nd marriage 18 Jun 1898 #2522
+sister Inga Jensen d. 1918 #21878
+John Joseph Foss, son of Arthur Foss d. 1922 #13479
+Margaret Wade Foss d. 1926 #13479
+Arthur W. Foss b. 30 Mar 1895 m. Margaret in 1916.
+John Joseph Foss d. 1918, France during WW I. This I know is Nora's brother. He is buried in France.
+Arthur Foss m. Anna Gennerich 2 Sept 1931
+Elizabeth Foss b.Mar 1920 #11454
+Margaret Foss b.Apr 1924 #16332

I believe most of this Foss family lived in NY. Nora was 103 when she died. She was a very interesting person to talk to.

I hope this little bit of info.will help any Foss researchers.

Sincerely,
Linda W.
