Re: Marguerite Marcotte discrepancy

The PRDH has Jean Foucher and Jeanne de Richecourt as Joseph's parents. Their son Joseph would have been the only recorded Joseph Faucher/Foucher in Quebec old enough to have married in 1704.

Leonard Faucher and Marie Damois had no sons named Joseph. They did have two sons named Jean-Baptiste. The first died as an infant and the second married Catherine Mezeray in 1710 which means he is not the one who married Marguerite Marcot.

There is no record of the marriage because there are no records from Lotbiniere parish before September, 1727. (Tanguay had a few of the earlier records for his book that no longer exist. Those records are only a small portion of the total number of events.)

The date January 27, 1704 actually comes from a marriage contract drawn up by notary Guillaume Denevers. Joseph's parents are not mentioned in the contract.

Marguerite Marcotte discrepancy

Many genealogy sites show Marguerite Marcotte (Marcot) having married Joseph Faucher on 1/27/1704, and his father being Jean Foucher married to Jeanne Mailleteau de Richecourt.
Other sites show Marguerite having married Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Faucher on 1/27/1704, and his father being Leonard Faucher married to Marie Damois (Damoys).

Both situations show the same children! Has anyone researched this apparent discrepancy? Thank you!

George Foucher

I am looking for information on George Foucher of Bennington, VT., especially relavent to his brother Gaston(?) and his mother and father. George was born in 1889 and in his youth was sent to Bennington, VT to be raised by a foster family named Hogan. He died in 1974 without ever having subsequent contact with his brother, mother or father. Family lore says his brother was named Gaston and was sent to a different foster family in New England. He was born in either Boston or France. We are not sure.

I don't have the URL but I found it through Google. My ggrandfather, Gaston Foucher supposedly came from Paris. He is one of my brick walls. There are lots of Fouchers and Fauchers in Texas and Louisiana but they are all cajuns.

Bud - Madeleine here, again. You've probably discovered by now that just about any name, surname, given name, whatever - can have several spellings. So, FOucher would be the same as FAucher, Fa(o)uchier, Foshay, whatever. For this reason, it's best to research by "soundex" as opposed to "exact" spellings. Throw that into the mix with also researching "To Mow", and maybe you can break down your wall. Hope so.

Madeleine

Bud - I'm finally getting back into research on my Faucher line after a long absence. Going over messages in the Faucher boards and came across your query again.

Not sure what you mean by, "Is it translatable (the name Faucher)?" Do you mean is "Faucher" literally translatable from French to English as "To Mow"? If that is your question, yes, it is. In fact, when you research Canadian records (French - translated), do not simply look for various spellings of Faucher - check also, "To Mow". You will find many listings as To Mow instead of Faucher!

Have you been able to research your line any further? If so, I'd be interested in seeing what you have found. I'd bet we're related.

Donna Anderson told you our great-great-grandfathers were Antoine (hers) and Sylvestre (mine), who were brothers. However, she missed Augustine, another brother, who was also my G G grandfather.

Augustine's daughter was Delia. Sylvestre's son was Alex Alexander. Delia and Alex (1st cousins) married. (Think there's a story there!) So their fathers (brothers) were both GG grandfather for me.

Delila and Alex had: Henri; Leroy; Bertie Sylvestre Augustine (my grandfather); and Marguerite. (Don't know why only grandpa had 3 given names!)

My mother was Bert' and Nora (Kame's) 4th child. They had: 1 boy still born; Fredrick Leroy(living); 1 boy died @ 1 month; my mother, Norma Lucille (living) ; Lorraine Marilyn (deceased 2000); and Eloise May (living).

My mother married Leonard Jack English. I'm the 3rd of their children. They had: Marylou Betty; Karol Annette; and me, Madeleine Jean.

Donna, Phyllis (another cousin in TX) and I are at a brick wall on Louis Faucher and Lucy Amede Desjardin, who were Antoine, Augustine, and Sylvewtre's parents. HOW I wish I could make a trip to Illinois and Quebec!

Let me know if you've been able to find anything more on your line.

Madeleine

Re: The Meaning of the Name Foucher

Donna,
Apropos of the meaning of Faucher being to mow, my grandfather George Foucher was a barber all his life. I'm surprised that I didn't get many replies to this query. I guess not too many Foucher/Faucher's are researching their family line. I would like some definite indication that these are variations of the same name. I did contact a woman in France who sent me a gedcom of her Foucher and Robert line but I couldn't connect it to my line. Florence Robert was Gaston's wife and George's mother. I deduce these two surnames are quite common in France. Gaston and Florence immigrated to Boston in the latter 1800's from France. The family story is that Florence was in ill health and attempted to return to France around 1895 with their two small boys George and Gaston, Jr. As the ship was sailing Gaston, Sr. had the two boys whisked off the ship and Florence sailed w/o them. She subsequently died in France and Gaston died in Boston leaving the boys orphans. They were supposedly put into a Catholic orphanage but I have been unable to identify it. Eventually George wound up in Bennington, VT where he was fostered to a family named Hogan. He married Lura Slade and eventually adopted his nephew, my father. Lura was my father's mother's sister. So, although I am not a Foucher by blood I have always borne the name and consider George my grandfather.

Afterthought to my previous message re meanting of "Faucher". "To mow" seems very appropriate as the Fauchers who went to Texas (and then some on to California) bought/sold/raised broom corn/broom making. That was true of both Antoine and Sylvestre Faucher, Sylvestre's son Bert, even my grandfather and his two brothers during first third of 1900's -- a family tradition that lasted quite a long time.

Dear Bud,
I saw that you had gotten a reply from Madeleine English re the meaning of "Faucher". She was correct in telling you "to mow". As it turns out, Madeleine and I are 7th cousins; our great-great-grandfathers were brothers, hers Sylvestre, mine Antoine, both sons of Louis Faucher and Amede Desjardins; they had come down to Kankakee/St. Anne./Kankakee Co., Illinois, from Quebec. Both brothers eventually went to Texas. Here's my reason for giving you all this history: she and I have never met, only discovered one another about a year ago, yet grew up having been told the same thing. In addition, another cousin, also in Texas as I am, grew up having heard same thing. As to is it translatable, not to any name that comes to mind!
I would be interested to know your Faucher history and if there is any connection.

I'm sorry this is so late, but I never received notification of your reply to my message in 2003.

Louis Foucher and Marie-Josephte Deniau/Dagneau are my great-great grandparents, through Marie-Hermine Foucher, born 28 Jun 1834 St-Philippe, married Joseph LeBeau 23 May 1865 in Fond du Lac, and died 9 Jun 1902 Appleton. They had six children, one of whom was my grandfather, Alexander John LeBeau born 6 Aug 1872, probably in Fond du Lac though I haven't found his birth record yet.

Louis Foucher and Marie-Josephte had 13 children that I've found, the last being Marie-Philomene Foucher, born 21 May 1839 in St-Philippe and whom I have listed as the wife of Isaie Liguori Roy. I noticed you have a different birthdate and place. Have you found Marie's other name yet?

My great grandfather Joseph Foucher was Pierre' brother Mederic being his nephew. Pierre and Genevieve were married at St Felix de Valois. This is how it works: Joseph and Felicite I only know of three children -- Joseph, Genevieve, and Pierre. Then Joseph marries Flavie Bruneau; Genevieve marries Emery Modeste, and Pierre marries Genevieve Piette. Then Joseph and Flavie (Philomene) Bruneau had -- Theophile, Damase, Avila, Narcisse, Philomene, and Rose Narcisse was my grandfather. So cool. I have been looking for Foucher's in my family tree for some time. I know many in mine. I am so glad I look in this place. Alor cousine!! Je reste dans Seattle, WA

Re: The Meaning of the Name Foucher

My grandfather's name was Berti Sylvester Augustine Faucher. He was born in Waco, Texas after his parents moved there from Momence, IL and to Momence from Quebec. At one time, he had researched the Faucher coat of arms and it was three rowels (sp?) The meaning of the name was given to him as "to mow", such as to mow a lawn, etc. I don't know anything definite, but can only relate the information provided to my grandfather (about 1958).
