An update.

Charles Edward was baptized in Mount Carmel RC church in Salford, a few days before his marriage there in 1886.
Date of birth 12 Feb 1860. No names of parents.

He and Mary Jane had five children, all except Walter died at a very young age. First child born and died in Salford, three children born in Eccles. Late 1894 or early 1895 they moved back to salford. The youngest child, Albert Edward was born and baptized in September 1896, and died in sep qtr 1897.
The baptism records all show Charles Edward as the father. This second man was indeed married and had left his wife.

In Jan 1898 Mary Jane has her first child without a father.

So this narrows down the death (or disappearance) of Charles Edward Foulkes. The middle name of the youngest child at leasts suggests they didn't split up before he was born.
And I have a date of birth.

Any ideas?

Loes

Hi Kim,
I've just started on my family tree a couple of days ago.
My great grandfather was Evan C Foulkes (1891) and great great grandfather was Matthew H Foulkes (1862)
Evan was born in Porthmadog which came under the Registration District of Ffestiniog at that time.
I'll make enquiries re Matthew losing his life at sea and get back to you unless you've already obtained info.
Regards
Mags
Charles Edwin Foulkes married Elizabeth Ann Taylor in 1883, was with her in the 1891 Census.

Charles Edwin Falkus (birth Falkis, 1862 Marylebone) married Martha George in 1884, Paddington St Augustine, Westminster. He 22, She 24. His father Edward Falkus. A daughter's baptism in an orphanage 1885, name now as Foulkes.
I finally found them in the 1891 census (Hendon) as Falkers.

So, not my guy, but I do appreciate your hints, it made me thoroughly check these names again.
I can exclude every Charles/Edward/Edwin that I can find in the 1891 census. Which isn't always easy.

Loes
Charles Edward Foulkes b 1858-60, married in Salford 1886

Charles Edward, bricksetter's labourer married Mary Jane Bennett 2 Oct 1886.
Charles E 26 yrs old, Mary J 18. Charles living at 8 James Place, Salford, Mary nextdoor, at no. 6. Witnesses James and Elizabeth Pickering. RC marriage in Mount Carmel Curch, Oldfield Road, Salford.
Charles Edwards father William Foulkes, soldier, deceased. Mary Jane's father William John.

I can only find him once in the censuses, 1891 with Mary Jane and daughter in Eccles. His age 32.
A daughter Mary Ellen 1890-1892.
A son Walter b 1894 (I have birth certificate)
Both children born in Eccles.

I can't find him before that, or after.
Mary Jane lived with a new man, John Nolan from abt 1896 untill he died. They were both Roman Catholic, had 7 children together but never married. Every birth she had registered without a father, and her own name as Foulkes formerly Bennett. They did live as Nolan though, even Walter untill he married (censuses, electoral rolls, service record WWI).

I can't find a birth for Charles Edward. It says Salford in 1891. It could have been anywhere if his father was a soldier.
I can't find him in 1901 and 1911.
I can't find a death either.

Every Charles born around the time had a different family in or after 1891.

Why Mary Jane didn't marry again? The story goes that John Nolan was already married to another woman.
Maybe she wasn't a widow either, and Charles Edward left her or she him.

On Walters marriage certificate he named his father as William Foulkes, bricklayer.
On Mary Jane's death certificate Walter names her the widow of William Edward Foulkes. He probably never knew his father.

Loes

I tried to find brother Edward in 1851. None of them seem to match.

Lots of possible marriages. I saw your tree with a father William, I suppose that's from Richards marriage cert?
There is a Mary Jones marriage with a William Foulkes on the same page (freebmd) in 1846, Conway.

If Richard was born in Tranmere, this should be his birth record:
On http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/
1855 FOULKES	Richard	Subdistrict Birkenhead	Registers Wirral
The same one on freebmd with the GRO ref
March Qtr 1855 Foulkes Richard Wirral 8a	404

Btw, how did you know his mother was Mary Jones?

Loes

Hi there

1861 census has the family living in the Tranmere area of Cheshire.

Mary Foulkes head widow aged 33 "Mangle Woman" born Hangolin, Denbighshire, Wales
Edward son aged 11 b. Denbighshire
Richard son aged 7 b. Tranmere
Ann daughter age 3 b. Liverpool Lancs

RG9 piece 2646 folio 76 p33.

Best bet for finding father, is obtaining birth certificate of any of the children to see if his name is given. If Mary Jones married Foulkes, there could be a marriage in Denbighshire in Wales given that Edward was born in Denbighshire.

Hope this information will be of use to you. Good luck in your search.
Ian & Sue Thompson, Liverpool

Hi Jenny,

I'm sorry but I have done no research on Elias WARHURST, as he's not my ancestor. I am descended from Daniel FOULKES who was Hannah's son, Elias' stepson.

All I can tell you is that although I have found no marriage for them, I have found that there were 7 children born to them from 1844 to 1853 and all 7 children died before they reached the age of 1 !!!! So sad, eh?

Sorry I can't give you any more info.
Kind regards,
Lynda Firth - Queensland

Hi Jane. You seem to have the same basic info that I have. I have not been able to go back further than Robert Foulkes. I have also not been able to find out the maiden name of his wife Jane. I have searched the Halkin records but got nowhere definitive, but have a few possibilities. I visited the Halkin churchyard a few years ago but could not get any new clues.

I attach a file of the descendants of Robert Foulkes that I have. I hope you can read it.

Are you on Genesreunited? If so, I can give you access to my family tree with all the details of the family that I have been able to put together.

Regards, Ian

Charles Edward Foulkes, Eccles, Lancashire

Charles Edward Foulkes, a bricksetter's labourer, married Mary Jane Bennett in 1886 in Salford, Mount Carmel Church. I found the couple in the '91 Census in Eccles, with a daughter Mary Ellen, born 1890, probably died 1892. In 1894 they had a son Walter. Both children were born in Eccles.
Charles must have been born in 1859/1860, according to the Census in Salford, and according to the marriage certificate.

Charles' father, according to the marriage certificate, was William Foulkes, soldier (deceased). Mary Janes' father was William John Bennett, painter.
Mary Jane was born in 1868, Poona, India, so I had expected the occupation of the fathers the other way round. An IGI record names her father as William, her mother as Mary.

Before the marriage, and after the birth of son Walter I can't find anything more of Charles Edward. In 1901 Mary Jane lived with John Nolan in Hulme, with son Walter and two more children. All of them are listed with the surname Nolan. By 1911 there were 7 children, all called Nolan, but registered as Foulkes at birth.
I have the birth certificates of two of the children, Margaret Foulkes born 1898 who I thought might have been Charles' daughter, and Lawrence Nolan Foulkes born 1906. On both certificates the mother is named as Mary Jane Foulkes, formerly Bennett, and no father registered. John Nolan must be the father of most of them, but they never married. Both of them were already married.

Mary Jane probably died 1941, as Mary Jane Foulkes (I haven't got that death certificate yet).

I can't find a death record for Charles, the ones I did find I can trace to other ones of that age.
He is not in the 1901 or 1911 Census.
Did he leave the country? Did he join the Army? Did he end up in prison?

I am also unable to find any record of him before his marriage. The 1891 Census says he was born in Salford, but it could have been anywhere, I suppose.

I'm stuck. I'd love to know where Charles Edward came from, and what became of him. And anything about William Foulkes, the soldier? Any ideas from someone? Maybe emigration records, whatever?

Loes

Hi Everyone- I am looking for any connection to a Matthew Henry Foulkes born in 1889 in Ftestinog, Caernarvon, Merionethshire, Wales. (For some reason it comes up under both counties.)

He had a brother called Evan Charles born in the same area .
His parents were Matthew Henry Foulkes (1862 -Bangor-Co Caernarvon) and Ann Griffiths- (1863- possibly Flintshire?)

I believe Henrys' father was Hugh Foulkes (1795-1869- Bangor) but not certain of this.

Does anyone have any info on this family? Matthew was said to have died at sea in 1912 in the merchant marines but I have not been able to substantiate this.
Thank you- kim

From Ireland???

Walter Joseph Foulkes was born in 1894. He married Elsie Collins from Salford in 1919. He died in Salford in 1943.
Elsies father was John Collins, born in Ireland according to the Census record of 1891.
There seems to be no birth record in England for this Walter J. Foulkes, and I wonder if he also came from Ireland. His fathers name was William Foulkes, a bricklayer.
In the census records of 1891 and 1901 I don't find a father William with a son Walter the right age.
Walter J. was a railway man, and before he married a private in the MGC. I can't find a military record.
How could I find out if he did come from Ireland? There is a rumour in the family that "they came from Cobh". Whether that would be the Collins branch or the Foulkes branch is not clear.
Robert/Jane Foulkes, Birkenhead

I am looking for the marriage record of my GGgrandparents, Robert & Jane Foulkes of Birkenhead, about 1836/1838. I have not been able to find it in the civil register, and suspect that it is only in a parish register. Robert was a stonemason and died in the Tranmere Workhouse infirmary (now St Catherine's hosital) in 1873.

They has children: William (1838), Sarah (1841), Maria (1842) (my Ggrandmother), Jane (1848), Mary (1850), Margaret (1852), Hannah, (1854) and Elizabeth (1857).

I would also like any contact with other decendents of Robert & Jane.
