Thank you very much. I knew that "D.W. Bates" gave the information on his mother-in-law Elizabeth Hanna Jones Foulks' death certificate. I also knew that Elizabeth's sister, Margaretta, married John M.Foulks' brother, Calvin and moved to Chicago. But I had tried to find. D(avid) W(alter) Bates in the census and could not find him. I have more information on the two Jones sisters if you need any. Thank you again for the help.
Maggie

Alice,

I have pictures from a family Bible, which has four different spellings for Foulke just on one page alone! My thought is that this line was not privy to higher levels of education. I have found 10 different spellings for those I have identified in my line.

Yes, it is possible we are related, but I don't have anything yet that ties to your information. I think it will take a few direct male descendents to participate in the DNA project to get us moving in the right direction. I don't know of any yet. The family Bible just didn't open enough doors in that area.

Good luck in your search.

Richard

From "History of Grant County, Wisconsin", 1881, p. 957.

TOWN OF LIMA

EDWARD FOULKS, (deceased); was born Feb. 14, 1812, in Wales; at 16, he came to America and began work on the Pennsylvania railroads and canals; in 1835, he came to Wisconsin and engaged in the mines about Dodgeville and Mifflin, being one of the first Welsh settlers in what is now Iowa Co.; about 1845, he came to Lima and settled on the farm where he died Dec. 15, 1876. His wife was formerly Ann Burney; they were married in Lima, she having come here in 1845, from Pickaway Co., Ohio, her birthplace; they had seven children - Mary, George, Thomas, Sarah, Ellen, Emma and Ida, all born in Lima. Mr. Foulks was a hard-working and upright man, who earned and left a good farm and home.

[I am not related to this family.

Hey Richard, saw your reply. We have Foulks/Fookes in Illinois about 1840-1850. Morris Foulks was living in Madison, Franklin county Ohio in 1840. He was born in MD about 1810+. In Madison at the same time was a J. Fauk, I'm sure it was a misspelling of Foulks. This "j" was in the age range of 40-50 yrs., making him about the age of Morris's father. Morris middle initial was "W", it is possible he was a William and went by his middle name "Morris". Morris and family left Ohio about 1840/41 and established themselves in Knox Co, Illinois. Is it possible we fit into your Foulks line? Regards, Alice Fookes-Radcliff

Jerry Williams who founded the Ridge Branch Baptist Church was my great-great-grandfather. One of my aunts who lives in Batesburg (Elanor Cunningham) supplied of names that includes a Ransom Folk and several of his siblings. She has informed me that there may be a possible tie in between the Folks and Williams.

If you are still looking to tie up loose ends with the Folks, may be we can make a connection. Perhaps???? we are related. Let me know. We can share information

I am looking for information about a Martha Foulks, born about 1807 in South Carolina. I do not know if this is a married name or not. She is listed on the 1870 census in Phelps co Missouri with a daughter, Ellen Hamby, born 1832 in TN. Next door is another possible daughter, Martha Mariah Hamby, born 1836 in Tennessee. All these people are listed as white, however, there is some mixed blood somewhere on this side of family.

Thanks,
Sheri Kerley
kerley@worldnet.att.net

OBIT: Caroline Elizabeth (Severn) Foulks ~ born Bucks County, Pennsylvania
The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, June 22, 1905

MRS. CAROLINE FOULKS of English Township departed this life on Sunday, June 18, 1905, after a brief illness with typhus fever. On account of the contagious nature of the disease the funeral was private and interment took place in the Brownlee Cemetery on Monday. Memorial services will be held later on, upon announcement.

CAROLINE ELIZABETH SEVERN was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, on December 16, 1842. She with her parents and family came to Iowa in 1856. On December 4, 1870 she was married to WILLIS B. FOULKS. To them were born eight children, four of whom died in infancy. Those who survive are SADIE, JOHN, VERA and JAMES, the youngest being in his twenty-first year. MRS. FOULKS had been for many years an earnest, faithful Christian. She possessed a pleasant disposition and made warm friends of all with whom she became acquainted. She was devoted to her family and her highest happiness came in being helpful to others. Two sisters, MRS. DAVID DAVIS of Knoxville and MRS. C.S. MCMULIN of Albia, and a brother, JAMES H. SEVERN of O'keen, Okla., are still living. All of the sorrowing relatives have the deep sympathy of the many friends.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Copied by Nancee(McMurtrey)Seifert
August 26, 2004
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ialucas/Main.htm
posted at this site with Nancee's permission

I am looking for any information on a Morris Fooks. Morris was in Madison Ohio in 1840, moving on to Knox County Illinois by 1846 where he died. He was 1st married to a Eliza Watson o Swatson in 1836 in Franklin County Ohio, then in 1838 he married an Olive Sweetser/Switzer/Swisher. He and Eliza had two daughters: Elizabeth and Adaline, he and Olive had a son named James M.W. Fooks/Fox. I just recently have found the 1840 Census for Madison Township, Franklin, Ohio with his name spelled Foulks. I believe Morris to be born between 1810-1820. I do know he was born in Maryland. Any help please.

I have a 1881 census record for John Foulks who worked as a Carpenter in Hammersmith, London. He was born in Liverpool 1816. He had a wife named Mary, born in Ilford, Essex 1826, and they are living with their two youngest children Emma b 1863 and Ada b. 1865.

I am not sure whether I descend from this Ada Foulks, but I do descend from an Ada married to Edward Sargeant, and there is one living nearby. If this is them, they returned to his birthplace in Plumstead, Kent and then emigrated to Duff, Saskatchewan, Canada in 1903.

If anyone has info on the John Foulks family, please contact me.

Liggett, University City Missouri l957, but I cannot find any such message on either the Liggett or Foulks message boards. Unless I hear from Lorah Steiner at my email address wretchedrefuse_20016@yahoo.com., I will assume that like all the other "replies" I have been notified of, it actually has nothing whatever to do with my query.
