I have just read your message posted in 2007 regarding the missing "proof" to definitively tie Thomas Alexander Fontaine to John Fontaine and Susannah Cockram. I am in the same exact situation as a descendant of Thomas Fontaine and Sarah Risher through their daughter, Caroline Jane.

I was curious to know if anyone has been able to supply the required documentation and also interested in knowing from which child do you descend.

Thanks.

Doris Fountain, William Arthur and Esther Fountain

I am seeking information on Doris FOUNTAIN daughter of Esther Annie LITTLEWOOD and William Arthur FOUNTAIN who married in 1890 in Windsor England. William and Esther live in Berkshire in 1891[census] with Williams two sisters Amy and Rose.
Esther and William had a daughter in 1892 registered as female. she is listed in 1901[census] as being called Doris S FOUNTAIN. Esther is living with her mother Elizabeth LITTLEWOOD and her cousin Ellen LITTLEWOOD.
William Arthur FOUNTAIN is no where to be found in the English census for 1901, by that stage he is living in New Zealand, [maybe married] with Rhoda Helen WYER. I am interested to know what happened to Esther and Doris.
In the 1901 census Doris is living with her grandmother[Elizabeth Littlewood] in London. Doris is listed as trainee teacher. Any information much appreciated.
Thanks Linda

Canadian Fountain's

Hello,
I am looking for information on Fountain who I believe lived in and around the Hamilton ON area. Specifically, Clarence Ambrose Fountain (believe he died around 10+ years ago) and his brother Henry Fountain (was living around St. Catherines about 10+ years ago). CA Fountain is my father's father and unfortunately we know next to nothing about him. I am guessing that he was born around 1915. He was involved with a Ruth Straw (born 1920) and had a son James W. Fountain (my father) in 1937. CA Fountain went on to have several other children with another woman (name unknown) but his eldest daughter's name of this association is Diane Major nee Fountain, there is also a brother who lived around Guelph at one time. Any information on this line is welcome.

The Fountain Line of Texas/Alabama

Am looking for additional information on the Texas/Alabama Fountains. Many of my current line still live in the Nacogdoches/East Texas area, and I have extensive cemetery records for most.

My paternal side would be Reid Fountain, Willie Floyd Fountain, Dock Fountain, Augustus/Aus Dean Fountain, Robert J Fountain (the same who owned the Fountain Plantation with his brother Noah, in the Ozark, Alabama area), Noah Fountain, and so on. Have Langford's, Moss, and Potts surnames in the tree also. Recent additions in the last couple of generations include Bridges, Chambers, Stolich, and others.

Before her death, my great aunt did extensive research into the lineage and traced a line back to the Huguenots, although the information gets sketchy, as most Fountain information is extremely murky, especially around the New World era.

If anyone would like to share information, and get some current information on this branch, please feel free to contact me at my public profile on Ancestry (donaldfountain) or at donaldfountain@gmail.com My tree is also shared, but as I am new on Ancestry, there is still much to enter.

As Always,
Rev.

I am also looking for information on the Fountain family of Georgia. I have just started my search, so i am only back to my greatgrandparents. All i know right now is that their names were James aka Jim and Mary Swain or Swane ( have found it spelled both ways). They were married in Wilcox County in 1902. James was her second husband, his brother William was her first, they were married in Wilcox County in 1896. They were two children from Mary and William and 4 boys and two girls from James and Mary. I believe James to have been born about 1878 in Ga. They lived mostly in Wilcox County, although my grandmother always said she was born in Ben Hill County.
I can give you birthdates and some death dates of these children if that would help. this is all the information i know right now. I have a few census records if you would like those too.
Thank you,
Robin

My G-Grandfather Lewis H Fountain lived in West Branch in the 1870s. He married Alice O. Parker there in 1874. They had 2 children, both girls. Lewis' parents Nathaniel C. and Eliza lived in Kalamzoo. Lewis had 3 siblings: Martha, Harriet, and Hiram. All were born in New York. Lewis was born in Lockport, Niagara County, NY. This is about all of the information I have been able to establish on this family.

Pat,
This is probably another "dead end" for you & me, but my line of Fountain's "probably" came from Stamford, CT during/after the RevWar.
There are a few records which indicate that our Stephen Fountain was the son of Aaron & Mary Fountain who lived in Stamford, CT after the war was over. He was a Loyalist and moved to British soil aboard the ship Union, bound from Sandy Hook, NY to Sandy Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1783.

Your Aaron Fountain, b. 1660, would be too old to have had a son Stephen who was old enough to fight in the RevWar (say 20 or so?, therefore born around 1756). But since there is a coincidence of the Aaron Fountain names being the same, perhaps you could contact me at drhooper2004@yahoo.com and we could see if anything matches up.
Thanks, Dorothea

Although a number of Fountains/Fontains came to England from France with the Huguenots. There are also records of Fountains in England much earlier than this. They appear in the earliest Parish Registers and there are wills pre 1600 and information to suggest they were well established Farmers and Yeomen in the 1500s.
Many of the Huguenot Fontains re-emigrated to the USA where there are today a great many descendants.
I have found no evidence of Huguenot Ancestry in my Line.
The name is believed to be of French origin but does not appear in the Domesday Book. So if we did come over with William we were so far down the pecking order to not have been given a piece of land for our trouble.

The furthest back I am sure about is Joshua Fountain born 1750 - I don't know where, but he was living in Rotherhithe when he married and then later lived in Greenwich. He had a brother called Charles who lived in Deptford. They were both described as "gentleman" in their wills and seemed to be pretty well off! We had thought that Thomas and Ann Fountain of St.Botolph's Bishopsgate were their parents, but I think this is unlikely as in Thomas's will he doesn't mention any children, only his wife.
Were Joshua and Charles born outside London?
Just a quick note to tell you I know of a marriage of one of our BRUCE's to a FOUNTAIN.
Our BRUCE were French Huguenots who came fled France for England - we have solid information confirming this BROUSSE line from original records by the Huguenot Society of London - records from the French Churches in London, England.

I do not have that particular line but mine is of that line.

Hope that gives you some further info on this line of FOUNTAINs - I heard from one of the descendants of this line who said that the name had been De LA FONTAINE.
shs

Hi Amanda,
I have heard the same thing (the Fountain trail)but can't remember where. Can you help me find a source (any source) for this? Also if you know who the first one was to arrive here I would be ETERNALLY grateful.

Also, for your information. My grandfather told me that when the family arrived here their name was "De La Fontaine" which was quickly changed to either Fontaine or Fountain.

I am able to trace my branch of the Fountain line to Aaron Fountain b. 1660 no idea where, however he shows up in Stamford, Ct about 1688. I have been unable to attach him to a previous generation.

Thank you,
Pat
jettamarie@mac.com

I'm not sure if this helps or hinders...but my line is traced back to about 1550 in France, I do know that when the survivors fled France (religous persicution) they at some point went to England for a time. It is very possible that someone other than my direct line would have stayed and married. Like I said, I don't know if this helps or not. You can check out my tree and see if there are any similarities...Let me know!
