Hi I just found your post on here using Google to research my family tree, and it would appear that your mother Marjorie is my Grandad, Albert Fowell's sister. Which I think makes you and my mum Carol cousins.

Suzy Cresswell

Hello!
I would love to exchange information with you. I have been able to get back reliably to Thomas Watts, bur 17 May 1707 of Hurst Farm, Berkeley. I have this Thomas's will. I believe I am a descendant of his son George of Alkington, d. 1721 and Elizabeth Ifield. I have quite a few Watts wills. It would be great to compare our notes.

Many thanks,
Dorian

George Watts, who married Anne Fowell (17m descent from Edward 1) had 2 brothers and one sister, Thomas who married Harriett Fowell, James who married Ann Wood and Mary who married John Farl(e). My husband Duncan of Alexandra Headland, Queensland Australia is 6th descendant of James. We have a Watts family pedigree dating back to John Watts of Berkeley (b.1684or 1634, most likely the former)

I have a Charles Fowell WATTS and an Eliza Frances Caroline Granville AUDAIN on my tree - married in Bristol in 1822, but seem to have lived in Nettleton and Corsham, Wiltshire as well as Bristol and Bath.
Hi If Henry was the son of Isaac and Martha, then on the 1861 census they are living with Isaac and they have a daughter Martha 10 months. I cannot find a birth for Martha in 1860,but on the 1871 census she is with her Mother Sarah who is a widow. There is a death for a Henry Fowell in 1862, which could be him. Hope this helps. Like you I assume James, Emma and Hannah were born to this couple before they were married as there don't appear to be any other couples with these names in Cheadle at the time.

Earl.

Hi, My 2x Great Grandparents are Samuel and Ann Fowell, they had 7 children Daniel,Emma, James, Hannah, Martha, Charlotte and Eliza. On the 1841 and 1851 census they lived at Mill Lane Cheadle.I think that they might be the cousins who married, but the only marriage i can find is for 4/4/1829. They had 3 children before this marriage date, 1822,1826,1827 so i dont know if this marriage is correct.I wondered if they just lived as a married couple up until then, as they had the same surname anyway. Also i cant' find Ann's parents, there are so many Fowells it's very confusing. If anyone can help i would be very grateful. Thanks Max.

Hi Kath, I believe so, but have no "hard" info. My great-father John Fowell (b.Woodstock 1841) was the second of 10 children. My line is concentrated in Ontario. I believe that offspring of one or more of that John's younger siblings, especially Henry, went West, but have not followed up in detail. Do we have a common ancestor in John Fowell & Sarah Corbet, my Great Grandfather John's parents? Hopefully someone from that line also has responded to you. Sorry that I can't be more helpful. John

I am a grandson of John Corbet Fowell and Edith Annette Watford. John C was the 3rd and youngest son of John M. Fowell (the agricultural implements dealer in Woodstock, ON) and Sarah Carroll/Carle/Ross and, as you probably know as well, second of 10 children of John Fowell (Plymouth, Eng, 1816) and Sarah Corbet.

I have been making good progress on my Fowell family tree through the excellent researchers at Oxford Cty G.S., and latterly through corresponding with a distant cousin (Henry Fowell, 8th child of John and Sarah)line.

In addition my own researching has taken me to various genealogical web sites, where I noticed your posting.

Are you still involved? Could we exchange information? A copy of the picture of John M in front of his agricultural implements store would be very much appreciated.

Sincerely yours,

John Fowell
Apt. 404 - 200 Rideau Terrace
Ottawa, ON

Hi Narissa.

I have a note that Thomas (husband of Millicent) was buried in 1843 aged 73 pointing to a baptism around 1770. I agree he was probably the son of John and Ann.

I think the Thomas born to Daniel and Bennit in 1765 married Phoebe Smith.

The only other possible is the Thomas (Fowell/Plant) bap in 1768.

The twins are Geneva and Genona Fowell daughters' of William Taylor Fowell from his first marriage to Lavinia Jennie Ford. Lavinia Jennie Ford Fowell died after giving birth to Loren Glen Fowell March 26 1892. I will try to post more information as I have some of my grandmothers notes.
Charles W. Fowell is the son from William T. Fowell's second marriage.

I should start this with a caveat that I have not fully researched this part of the family tree and have certainly never looked at the Bettany / Pearson connection before today.

If I had to take a guess at who you Ann Fowell MIGHT be I would be tempted to plump for the daughter of Thomas and Millicent FOWELL but proper research could overturn such a guess very easily.

‘Your’ Ann appears on the 1851 to 1881 census records and whilst there are some minor discrepancies in age this points to a birth at Cheadle of between 1808 and 1811 with an average of around 1810. Clearly the Ann married to William Pearson is not the daughter of Adam and Margaret as that Ann was bapt in 1777.

Vanity means it is not totally unusual for people on census returns to say they are younger than they actually are but 8 years seems something of a stretch and given that there is an Ann on census records who says she was born in 1802 (this the Ann who married her cousin Samuel Fowell).

So I think it highly unlikely (though not impossible) that ‘your’ Ann is the daughter of Samuel and Martha and that she is clearly not the daughter of Adam and Margaret.

Thomas and Millicent did have a daughter Ann bapt in 1810 at Cheadle. This ties with the date and place Ann gives for her birth on all subsequent census records.

Now I know an earlier poster said that Ann daughter of Adam and Margaret married David Bettany. Obviously you need to ask them about this as they may be privy to certain information. I wonder if some confusion may have been caused by this entry on the 1841 census…

1841	Mill Lane	Fower (Fowell)	William	Na	60 Staffordshire
1841	Mill Lane	Bettany	Elizabeth	Na	45 Staffordshire

William and Elizabeth are children of Adam and his 2nd wife Ellen Upton so I think it was Adam’s daughter Elizabeth who became a Bettany and not his daughter Ann.

This is the family of Thomas and Millicent on the 1841 census…

1841	High Street	Fowell	Thomas	Na	70	Labourer	Staffordshire
1841	High Street	Fowell	Millicent	Na	65 Staffordshire
1841	High Street	Fowell	Joseph	Na	35	Grocer	Staffordshire
1841	High Street	Fowell	Edward	Na	20 Staffordshire
1841	High Street	Shenton	James	Na	20	Labourer	Staffordshire
1841	High Street	Shenton	Dorothy	Na	20 Staffordshire
1841	High Street	Shenton	Joseph	Na	2 Staffordshire
1841	High Street	Shenton	Thomas	Na	6m Staffordshire

Hi Earl

I haven't been researching for long so I have no cofirmation of this but I was told

William Pearson married Ann Bettany ( nee Fowell 12 .10.1831 in Cheadle Stafford she was the daughter of Samuel Fowell and Martha Beardmore born September 1802 died 1885. ( Ann Fowell married 1 David Bettany in 1827 and had a daughter Mary, presumably he died before 1831 ) William Pearson and Ann had a further 9 children, Hannah 1832 Cheadle, Margaret born1836 cheadle, Edwin born 1842 Darlington died 1893 Middlesbrough,William 1838, Joseph 1840, Caroline 1844 died 1844,Thomas 1850, Caroline Jane 1845 and Ann 1841. Thomas was my great grandfather.

I saw in the thread that the Anne Fowell that married David Bettany was the daughter of Adam Fowell and Margaret Thorly so am a little confused. May be you can shed some light

Regards
Gail

A lady called Julia Jones, nee Watts, wrote to me as follows:
Thomas Watts father and mother were John Watts born 1762 in Modbury, and Agnes Symons, born 1760, also I believe from Modbury. John Watts was a thatcher and the sexton of the church. They lived at 36 Brownstone Street, Modbury. Myself and my husband Steve visited Modbury at christmas but unfortunately the house was no longer there. We have visited Modbury church and graveyard and have found John's grave. We have also visited Ugborough and found the grave of Thomas,
She told me that much of this information came from the Sherriff family website but when I tried to access it, it was "under construction".
I'd be grateful for any Watts family information you have, and very happy to share with you whatever I have.
My email address is ellarule@gmail.com if you want to communicate direct.
Regards,
Ella

Hi Ella.

I didn't know that they were buried in Ughborough grave yard...a few years ago hubby and myself had the afternoon there and it was a beautiful day although I was looking for Stentafords.....
In about 1978 we started going to a caravan park in Modbury, and we loved it there. my dad died in 1988 and a few years later we went through his personal things.. to hard before. and found his parents names as he never spoke about them they died while he was at sea... well I traced back to Modbury I couldn't believe it. we had walked down the street where his ancestors lived...

Yes I have Thomas's siblings ..

Who on GR are you in contact with? reagrding Watts? sorry being nosey.

Pat

Yes - nowadays Bedminster is a suburb of Bristol.

I have by the way heard through Genes Reuited from a lady in Wales who is descended from William Watts and his first wife, through one of their sons Alfred, who migrated to Wales to work in the coal fields.

Have you managed to trace all Thomas's brothers and sisters? I haven't been able to do much outside census and family records centre, neither of which are much help in tracing siblings, and of course Thomas et al predated those. I assume that you know the family moved to Ugborough and that Thomas and his wife Susannah are buried in the churchyard there.

There is a family story, for which I have been unable to find the slightest substantiation, that William Watts died fallling off the steeple of the church at Ugborough. Well, for a start this church has a tower not steeple and secondly the death certificate negates that theory. I did wonder, however, if one of William's thatcher relatives might have fallen off a roof at some point, and that this incident got transferred to William through faulty recollection - did you hear anything?

Do you know if there are any Wattses left in Modbury? I haven't visited it yet but must do so since clearly the family has a strong connection with it!

All the best,

ella

Yes. William Watts was my great grandfather, born in Ugborough in 1825 if I remember rightly. He married twice, the first wife being Ann Horswill. At some point they moved from Ugborough to Bedminster. After Ann died, William married Mary Pike. He had lots of children by Ann Horswill, but only two with Mary Pike, Ernest and Frank. Ernest died in infancy. Frank Watts was my grandfather. He married Jessie Pickles from Yorkshire and they had two children Joan and Peter. Joan, who married Carlos Martinez, had three children, including me.

I understand that Thomas Watts, my great great grandfather was a master thatcher, as were his father and grandfather, both named John, and all of whom were based in Modbury but I don't have any documentation on this and would love some help in tracing this.

Incidentally, how is it that we are related?

My email address is ellarule@gmail.com

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Ella (Eloisa)

Have received the marriage certificate, but William Bently is down as William Fowell's father. In fact, he was his step father. So, I'm no further forward in finding out who William Fowell's father was (his birth certifiacte has that field blank).

Have made further progress with Lucy Rock's parents. I have a copy of their marriage certificate in 1847, and now know names of their parents. That's as far as I've got so far.

Ok, Adam Fowell was buried on 4th April 1820 which pinpoints him as the son of Charles FOWELL and Mary Shenton.

Adam appears to have married twice. In 1777 to Margaret THORLEY at Draycott to which union Ann FOWELL was born. He then appears to have married Ellen UPTON Checkley in 1779 to which union at least 8 children were born.
Next step is to find Margaret Thorley (Fowell's) burial record.

Regards Earl.
